More Scandinavian music, please.

Leevi and the Leavings - Teuvo, Maanteiden Kuningas (= Teuvo, The King of the Highways)

Great band and maybe their best song. Their lyrics are pretty humorous so their music may not be so good if you don't understand finnish.

Here are two other bands which I don't like that much but my friend does so I post them :
CMX - Ruoste

Timo Rautiainen & Trio Niskalaukaus - Lumessakahlaajat (dedicated for finnish KFOR troops serving in Kosovo)

Then there are also many good finnish metal bands but they sing in english: Nightwish, Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius, Sentenced etc

Dimmu Borgir, Norwegian Black Metal, "Enthrone Darkness Triumphant" is the album of their that I have listened most to, it has at least three realy good songs.

There is a Swedish band called "Kent", making a bit softer rock, but with very catchy songs and they sing in Swedish.
Hagesta Hill is a very good album of theirs, and there is a English version of it.

My list consists of artists that for the most part most of the countrymen for the various countries won't even know of since I'm more of an indie dude. None of these people sing in their native tongue, it's worth mentioning, too.

The best from Scandinavia, from what I can recollect, is The Knife (Björk meets, er, Depeche Mode? - one of my fave bands, though) and Kings of Convenience (loungie indie rock, also a fav). Tim Christensen is sorta the classic crooning and accustic guitar voicing out recent heart-ache and the like - one of the best of his ilk. His former band, Dizzy Mizz Lizzy, is also worth checking out. Kashmir is also an o.k. rock band with a lead singer with a distinct "sore" voice, incomparable to anything I can think of - not in the sense that it's utterly amazingly uniquely fantastic, but it makes for some good music all in all. José Gonzáles is a mellow accustic guitarist with roots in Argentina which affects his style in a great way. He's best known for his adaption of The Knife's Heartbeat which he turned into a great croonified version used in the Sony commercial with the coloured balls rolling down the San Fran-esque road.

Lampshade is a band with a cutesy lead female singer; a rock-esque Norah Jones/Björk description perhaps fits? Nightwish is probably (along with HIM) Finland's most well-known band, an epic metal group with a soprano - or, used to have, until they fired her - and a very varied style, encompassing orchestral, solo and power metal style, makes for some great music in that genre. Then there's The Tiny (no aliteration intended); in short, a Joanna Newsom that just sounds good. :P

A lot of good music, but I personally prefer Islandic and Canadian music - the U.S. just has the demographic working in its favour.

Albums to get for the various artists - even though it is a subjective matter, naturally; I've only written down those where there are some mediocre or pretty far out albums among, or whose different albums I actually remember and still am able to discern:

- The Knife: Silent Shout and Deep Cuts (which contains the original Heartbeats).

- Kings of Convenience: Everything except Versus, a remix album that isn't that great if you ask me.

- Kashmir: Zitilites is good, but I can't really recall the albums since it's been a while since I heard them.

- Nightwish: That Nemo album isn't really that fantastic...

i forgot all about the knife. amazing group.

datarock is ok too.

I'm Canadian, and they sing in English, but you've got to try some Nightwish, even if only for their Ghost Love Score.

If you ignore the horsehockey video hodgepodge, this has the best song behind it. Just wait till you get 7 minutes in, it's ridiculous.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions, just keep'em coming! Several names are new to me and I'm going to check them all out. I'll get back with some comments too.

I think it is implied that when a music lover says "Everyone loves him!" he means everyone that matters i.e. everyone who loves him.

All others are misguided or havn't heard him.

I think its more like, everyboddy who speaks danish loves him.

But they don't. I hate him. Yuck! Its been 30 ears since he made anything decent.

But he does have a large audience in Denmark. He's "world famous" around here. ;)

"Junior Senior" could be worth checking out.

I picked up "Nordic Roots" in a used music store. Its one of the best CDs I have ever purchased without knowing ahead of time what I was getting. There are some 12 differant bands playing 20 songs. Most are sung in the native language and range from pre-medieval to modern day. This is one of my favorite CDs...

Nordic Roots

You can get it from iTunes or order it direct from Noside.com. They have 3 of these Nordic Roots compilations and they are just $5.00 each!! They have other CDs as well.
