Most Embarassing Moment

few nights ago I had an empty army die of Disease in the jungle........... I was pretty annoyed lol

Other than the usual forgetting about a unit or leaving cities or zero defense units undefended I have had 2 really embarassing moments.

1) I had just bought civ III, scanned manual, started game. Met Aztecs. Traded 3 techs to them for an absurd amount of gpt in the early AA, about 40 or 50. I was thinking, wow, I can't believe this deal, I am going to be rolling in the gold. The techs were like alphabet, pottery, I was America an had popped several techs. The very next turn they declare war on me. I am of course pissed because they ripped me off so I vow to destroy them. I start to build an army only I cannot build horseman or swordsman because I never hooked up my resources, (it only took about an hour of reading the manual to realize this midgame) But I decide to build a bunch of warriors and upgrade to swords once I do get my iron hooked up. So I road through mountains and hills. Then here comes the Jaguar rush while I am staring at them wondering, "What kind of units are those and how come I can't build any?" Shut down computer, thoroughly read manaul. Start new game, go search for Aztecs to destroy immediately.

2) While trying to trade a tech for tech I needed to add a little gold to complete the deal, so I am by haggling, "Will you take 25 gold, no, okay how about 50, yes, hmmm, let's try 40, no, how about..." Finally I have got the best price, tech for tech plus 47 gold . . . only I accidently hit per turn instead of lump sum and I did not notice for about 10 turns, then I am like, "Why am I going broke!!?"

Well, I've got enough "not thinking" moments to fill a very large book but this one stands out, mostly because it's from my current game...

I've got a nasty habit of trying to continue messenger conversations while playing civ and I always end up missing something important while I'm trying to talk to someone. In this case I noticed I was one turn away from a tech so I dropped my science to 10% to get some cash and still get the tech in one turn. During the inter-turn the AI must have noticed I was generating a very large surplus of gold and contacted me for one of those insane luxury deals. Not paying attention I agreed and am locked into a 10,000 gold payment for incense and my science rate is now capped at 10% for quite a while. Bonus: They have MPPs with four nations so a war to avoid this payment probably won't work.

I hate messenger.

Early modern age. English and Germany at war. I'm in the middle. They are both polite with me. I'm in ROP with english. I give ROP to the germans too so they can beat up each other while i'm reinforcing, developing and collecting cash.
In the process of relocating troops, i accidentally left undefended my capital. It had only a leader, which is worthless for defending purposes. Ah, my territory was entirely railroaded. I hit <enter>, then guess what?
I glare in horror as a puny german longbowman (!!!!) materializes out of one of my tiles next to my capital and walks boldly to conquer it! Leader killed, capital razed. Roma (my capital) was by far the city with most culture in the world. Pyramids, sistine chapel, hanging gardens, newton university, copernicus observatory, sun tzu and smith's company: all these wonders lost forever.
"We love the king" ends everywhere, a few towns go to civil disorder. Research way down, money down, most of my barracks disappeared, most of my granaries gone.
I curse wildly at my stupidity, i can almost imagine Bismark laughing at me "That moron! Idiot! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA"
Next turn, REVENGE! Nuked Berlin and a few other german cities. Launched an all-out attack with all my troops, germany erased from world in a dozen turn... Btw, my wonderful culture-champion, top of science and top of economy capital disappeared forever, what a shame! (on me)

That story made me cry.

I have a bad habit of leaving zero-defense units unprotected when pressing "enter." One time I lost 64 Radar Artillery to a regular Infantry. Another time...how many pre-replaceable parts slave workers does it take (in Monarchy) to clear a jungle and build railroad in one turn? I lost 2 x this number. There have been others but these are the ones that still give me nightmares.
(48+6+12)*2 - you lost 132 slaves. ouch! :cringe:

Thanks for working that out...I think :D ...the most galling thing that the computer put them all to death. I sat there in stunned silence for about five minutes when I realised what had just happened.

I was playing the Pentagenisis mod when I declared war on the Outer Union, they were an age ahead of me and I didn't even have silicon yet. I died in about 3 turns.

i have an old saved game with the egyptians (the first game i played) and i spent WAY too much time looking for just the right spot for a city. i also didnt know how to build a new city and i thought that explorers were good fighters from all of my history books, so i built like 400 of them (not paying any attention to my gold) and i didnt know what the blobs (resourses) on the terrain were so i didnt pay any attention to them. so i fell way behind in the game so now im in the industrial ages and evryone has modern armors attacking my only city. with 422 explorers, 56 longbowman, 12 spearman, and 1 warrior. it?ll have to wait a long time when they capture my city and ALL OF THOSE EXPLORERS.

A long time back I built a warrior to explore and I found the roman capital undefended so I declare war, then move they still have no units so I capture it, but I left AI respawn:wallbash: on so I had to build defensive units, so I couldn't expand for a while.

I remember having afour century long battle with the Japanese as the Chinese. I was always ahead of them technologically, so I always fought their spears with swords, their swords with muskets and so forth. Eventually I had tanks and infantry and they still only had Samurai. I was so happy, because after this long hard fought war, I'd be able to win. Ten destroyed tanks later, I was oh so very pissed off. SAMURAIS CANNOT HURT TANKS(@*#*@&!#^%@!#%@&#@!&%

The mistake I probably consider my most emabarrasing (and there where many) was fortifying that Great Leader (Vanilla Civ) until I had reached the tech for the wonder I wanted. Fortified leaders go to the bottom of the stack. Where you can't see them. And are easy to forget. . . Long story short, I begin construction on MY wonder only to loose it to another civ with 5 turns left to go. All the while my GL just sitting there twiddling it's thumbs.

It's a good thing I'm so good looking . . .

My most embarassing moment had to be the time I made the unfortunate mistake of sending 5 modern armors to attack a stack of 8 enemy calvary. Now you might be saying "Whats wrong with that? Those tanks should have no trouble winning". Well, that's what I thought too! But as it turns out, these where no ordinary calvary. These where "superhuman, zombified space alien" calvary units from hell. Needless to say, my poorly underprepared modern armors which only had an attack power of 24 stood no chance against the mighty defensive value of 3 the calvaries possesed. I lost all 5 MA's and only killed 3 calvary and wounded 2 others. T'was a sad day indeed.

Edit: Oh yeah, and this was on grassland too.

That is nothing. My army of four elite Mech Infantry lost to a veteran rifleman on grassland and the rifleman didn't even lose one health :cringe:

My most embarrising moment was when a egyptian cavarly was inside my empire. Well... becouse i was in a alliance against garthaginians, I decaited not to chace them away. But suddenly the egyptians decleared war on me and their cavarly was next to my capitol that was not protected! They sacked my CAPITOL CITY that had 3 Wonders in it.

I was playing on the Standard world map as Egypt. I owned everything except for Australia, North America, and a fifth of South America. Russia owned North America and that fifth of SA. Greece owned Australia. The Greeks had been launching "suprise" raids on New Zealand ever since they could build galleys, and had conquered a Korean city before I could get to it- so I was a bit annoyed with them. I just needed one big city to get the population I needed for Domination, so I decided to take Corinth, on the northern coast. I declared, dropped 30 cavalry off, and hit enter.

Well, Australia being the small continent it is (in Civ3, anyway) and with everything being roaded, I got to see almost every offensive unit in Greece attack my stack. 60% of the stack was wiped out. I didn't have the troops to take Corinth, so we left. I wound up taking Russia's fifth of SA away on the last turn to get my 1% population.

Lesson learned: when attempting an amphibious invasion, always keep your transports nearby.

And drop off defensive units to protect the Cavalry, like Riflemen. If you had 5 Riflemen you might have not lost any cavalry.

In my last game, I was going for a Republic slingshot.

My idiot Scout (yes, yes I know who gives him the orders :mischief: ) entered a tribe and ta-taa. We got Philosphy. :(

I looked at the bar and see that there is 1 and only 1 turn for us to learn Code of Laws...

I missed that 50 turns just by 1 turn...

The free tech from philosophy only happens in conquests, right? I've not ever gotten a free tech from philosophy in Vanilla and PTW. I can't believe i've not been the first to get it at least once.

Mine is in a GOTM game. I was doing my usual of building a Granary first. An AI warrior appeared and I made contact. The warrior walked right in and took my undefended capital while it was still building a granary. Conquest loss in 3650BC :(.

Needless to say I always build a Warrior first now!

Turn on Regicide. Then your leader will defend the town. Nothing is more humurous than seeing Mahatma Ghandi (or whoever) become a veteran.

When I lost three games in one day!

Once I got wiped out just before I could hook up iron.

The second time I had my Legions up and running. Before I had enough of them, fifty gadzillion Persian Horsemen, accompanied by another 30 gadzillion infantry (Warriors, Archers, Spearmen) attacked. I was crushed. I don't know if I had the numbers to stand a chance, but since their Horsemen repeatedly killed full-health Legions without taking damage it didn't take long... on the plus side, my Warriors on the other side of my Civ had killed off the Greek Swordsmen without me losing any units.

The third game, I popped a hut with my first Warrior. The barbarians killed my Warrior and my Worker and then attacked my capital and stole all my gold.

All three games were as the Romans, Regent difficulty, PTW.
