Most game changing concept/tip

That's why the ‘active treaties’ tab in the advisor is so useful. You suddenly realise that your not getting attacked by some @#$%& Fascist AI on your doorstep is dependent on keeping up rampant war weariness in your orderly peace-oriented Democracy by remaining at war with some off-continent bunch of dungheads and say ‘Wait, what did I agree on? Where're my autosaves again?’.

Prioritising contact and good relations with other continents for tech trading and interfering in overseas power-balance (gifting techs/resources to the weak etc) so that I don't fall too far behind from a runaway AI (or human opponent. Probably my favourite aspect of the game and one that might be enough to keep me competitive until I hit my power spike.

There are few things sweeter than playing with a human opponent on another continent who discovers Chivalry, upgrades their army of horsemen and declares war on a weak AI neighbour for a game defining blitzkreig; only to find that their new foe has mysteriously upgraded his spearmen to Musketeers overnight and that their own medium term strategy for success has just disappeared round the u-bend.
