My adventurer crossbowman just gained a little over 400 experience in one turn. The assault lasted 45 minutes. My jaw is on the floor, and I can still barely believe it just happened. (Why did I think that bounty hunter promotion was useless!)

Anyone able to beat that? (someone is going to post that this is a common occurance and I'm going to be sad I think)

On a related note, blitz + defensive strikes is just sick and wrong. 100% chance to cause 50% to every unit attacking you? Disgusting.

Wow, thats pretty amazing. Quick attack and Defense are a must for me. Well and trully over the simple animations.

I start to get really worried around a dozen kills in. Like first few, okay, they're suiciding some guys on my hero. Few more and... merde... what if they actually pull it off? They're not going to stop at this point...

Wow, that blows my best away. The most I've ever seen was when I was playing around with my new civ, and had given them some native Illusion units (bad idea, btw). One strong illusion with first strikes is an invincible city defender, since it heals fully after every battle. Got 100 or so xp out of a Balseraph stack.

That's why Hall of Mirrors can be awesome. When I remember an Illusory Gilden Silveric slaughtering an entire stack of Ljosalfar Longbowmen to save me from certain defeat I can't help but :D . . . good thing Arendel Phaedra sent her hero along.

Wow, 400? I once had Rosier (with a great commander attached) get 108 XP in one turn.

I got 256 from sending a throwaway drown up against Archeon... and he won.

He then got Othus's Axe, got promoted up to Stygian, and he went on a rampage across the map.

BTW, how does XP in FFH (and Civ4 ?) work ? Is it based on level diffrence, combat chances or something else ?

Both. Well, more combat odds, because that factors into the combat chance.

of course, I think the base strength of both units counts as well, what I would like to call "class" of unit.

A warrior will get more xp for killing an axeman than an axeman will, (theoretically) even if both have the same combat odds.

I'm guessing you had a valour promotion. I'm guessing you got attacked by over 200 units. The 200 stacks are a bit more common nowadays but people don't defend against them every game for sure. You might also have a been a bit lucky in combat as once you get over 100 random rolls the chances of some stray damage will increase.

I'm pretty sure I'll never beat 400. Well done.

Holy wow.

That's actually what I was getting really afraid of as I watched this battle keep going, some lucky attacker taking down my hero with their .00000001% chance.

Dave I actually didn't have the valour promotion, but I am suspecting that you get awarded XP for defensive strikes, which I suppose ends up giving me an extra XP per kill.

After I posted this I started thinking my hero was invincible, but was rudely disillusioned by a huge stack of exploding fire zombie things which I hadn't fought up to that point.

Prye Zombies are extremely dangerous in large stacks. There "explosive" deaths will decimate any stack that tries to attack them. The best way I've found to counter them is to use high mobility units and attack them pull back one at a time (chariots for example) or absolutely spam the crud out of them with fireballs and other spells over a number of turns.

Do fireballs actually work on Pyre Zombies? Wouldn't that be kind of like drowning a fish?

They have fire resistance, but they still do some damage. So its more like throwing a tsunami at a fish to make it drown

I've always found Cultists to be the best cure for pyre zombies, although of course it only works near water. The damage done by their explosions seems to be linked to how strong they were when they died, so area effect spells are a life saver. The Air 2 spell probably works well too.
