Mounted Warrior

Ok, the main problem is..:
If they want to create a realistic special units,
why they created 'Mounted warrior'?

If they want to create a practical special units,
why they created 2 identical units to the small mid-east area?
:egypt:  :egypt:

Since the special unit is linked to the Golden Age and the Iroquois Golden Age didn't start until after they met the Europeans, they must have had access to horses at the time.
However, living in the forest as they did, a Mounted Warrior still doesn't make sense.
Some Musketeer unit that treats all squares as roads would be more appropriate IMHO.

A few points:

1) Tech reality: In the 1st century AD, a Roman(?) scientist by the name of Hero (alternately Hiero) produced a diagram for what would have been the world's first STEAM ENGINE. Unfortunately/Fortunately (depending on your views of what effect this would have had in history), the Romans were not very scientifically inclined (unless you consider architecture a science), so it fell by the wayside. In theory, if the Greeks still dominated the Mediterranean at this time, we would've had a functional steam engine by the end of the 2nd century.

2) Iriquois assimilation: It's a good point. In "Pastwatch: The Redemption of Christopher Columbus", Orson Scott Card uses historical evidence to demonstrate that a powerful meximerican culture could have emerged if several different tribes had been united (via conquest or arrangement). In the 'alternate' reality of Civilization, the Iriquois nation could've expanded similarly.

While it could be interesting to try to 'rewrite' history by setting up scenarios where history hinges (Battle of Marathon, for example), I prefer the more general style of Civilization. If we want to refight Gettysburg, well, buy Sid Meier's Gettysburg. So what if Americans exist at the dawn of time, or the Iriquois have horsemen? Gameplay is more important to me than historical accuracy any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

The Native American "mounted warrior" was a big deal in the late 1700s and early 1800s, so just because the mounted warrior wasn't around until that late doesn't mean that Firaxis is unjustified in making that their special unit. I think the mounted warrior looks really cool and is better than the brave, especially since the Aztecs already have a special regular warrior unit.

I agree with Robespierre. I think the mounted warrior will be cool, and if the Iroquois would have had horses, they would have been much more powerful...

how about the effects of wonders? e.g. how come that a single building (call it pyramids or make a scenario and call it whatever you want) can enable every city, no matter how far away to store it's grain in it or make granaries appear in every city?

and so on...

Civ realism? The examples that you give are game devices. Is the Roman special unit a nuclear weapon(available during the first hundred years of the game perhaps)? No, it is not. That would not be realistic in relation to the rest of the civs in the game.

I believe the Mounted Warrior was a bad idea for a some of the same reasons that were previously given by other posters plus: isn't the headress a religous or leadership symbol? Every warrior that rode a horse did not wear a headress, right?

While I don't like the idea of a mounted warrior special unit, I am curious as to which specific timeframe it will become available.

And because I have time to kill:

Your best example-I would attribute that to the supply ships that are not represented by the game. So the game allows the next best thing:transfer from units or cities that you own.,

The person that runs the civilization(the player) is the same as in any other "god" game. There is no unit on the game board that represents you, the whole civ is you.

Your civ has decided to keep a unit that is of no concequence in the modern world. It is an honor guard of sorts... people are recruited into it and retire from it all the time, and it exists because the government provides funds for it to exist.

It appears the glorious Sid(keep in mind I am a fan of his too) has made a mistake(not his first). I think ship units should have some more movement points. But then again, doesn't the time shift in the later stages of the game? Perhaps on a small or normal size map its not so bad in the 20th century?

Another good one. I believe that the game acknowleges the city has a revolution? Perhaps this was an earlier game concept of culture that wasn't successful? Perhaps the game designers only thought the spys would be used on the fringes of a civ. I don't know about you, but when i send a spy deep in country occasionally they would get ejected. If the AI was anygood if you did that, the surrounding cities should bulk up and reinvade the city or rebribe it back. The two civs would eventually use up too much money and it would not be economical to continue.

Same as above. The civ is you. Your civ is not immortal - it has successfully survived.

Your settler didn't attack the elephant right? Well they must have dug defensive positions or dare I say Elephant Traps? Perhaps pitchforks were used.

The game effect that the designers chose for building the pyramids was that a civ that could successfully build those faster than anyother civ would have to feed the laborers. For some reason I thought it allowed for no disorder between govt changes (I will have to pull out civ2 to play again). The pyramids were not built over night and showed that the civ could achieve a longterm goal with little resistance. Keep in mind though that Pyramids were built in the real world though... so at least it was realistic in that sense...

Similar to the battleship issue... with the difference that refuelers are not a gamepiece and this was thier way of making the stealth bomber representative of modern day bombers that can stay in the air for extensive periods. The player is punished with loss of unit by not landing in time- I can;t wait to see the new airstrike features...

and a new one from me

I agree the game designers made a bad choice here... I will probably make a special unit bowman either higher def or off or movement(I haven't decided yet). Mod makers and individuals that have access to history book can make thier own special unit for the Mounted Bowman. Thanks to the designers for including an editor!!!
