I've observed a bit in the end game save files of the top GOTM players that even on deity games they will often only build barracks and horse->knight->cavalry units, with an occasional marketplace or library in their cities. I want to try a game in that style and win with cavalry, if possible.

lurkers comment:Not a sign up, to much SG's right now. Starting position is good, MP. I don't think win on emperor is going to be a problem with these conditions. (If I understood correctly it's not AW, right? ;))
Good luck

I was just thinking of starting a solo game with the Mongols, but I think I'll join this, instead. :) I really want to try out those Keshiks.

I'm looking to make the jump from Emperor to Demigod here on my own soon. A good war game might help me get ready for it. Not to mention, I would like to get back into the SG thing after a long absence (from a rather brief presence in the first place).

In other words, sign me up...if you will have me. :p

Ive won on monarch! and i think your in an SG of mine thats emperor. so put me last though cs im out till friday now.

lurker's comment: Isn't that exactly like Igor1 - IAA team ? Can't sign up though, but I'll drop in for some of those typically unclever and unclear remarks that made me famous ;)

Looks like we got a team, Yaype, Coolio, dl - welcome!

I've started us off so...here we go:

3600 Meet Sumeria.
3450 Meet Inca.
3300 Trade Warrior Code to Inca for Bronze Working and 10 gold.

Not much has happened, just some scouting. It's kind of dangerous to start next to two AGR civs...

A couple points I want to make:
- Trading will be very important. We can't build libraries or marketplaces other than in our capital (which will be making nothing but settlers for awhile). Try to use CivAssist II or MapStat to know when trades become available.

- Karakorum is nothing but a settler factory for now...don't break the cycle once it gets going.

- No SoZ...unfortunately. It would have to be built in our capital, so once the expansion phase is over, maybe then we can build it.

- Pretty tight city spacing, about 12-14 tiles per city. By the time we get to Cavalry, almost all our cities will be building nothing but cavalry, so we should win a bit before hospitals anyway. Here's a dotmap. City 1 gets ivory - very important. City 2 hopefully blocks off sumerian expansion, and City 3 is a good food/shield location. City 4 can use the third cow.

- comments are of course, welcome. We're here to learn, and that means me especially. :)

mmm we'll have to get those tusks soon or sumeria will get them... and what an amazing start cows for the capital fertall land all around AND ivory! id say we should go for a 20k in the capital.

This really is looking like a great start. There is lots of space for say, horsemen, keshiks, and cavalry to roam... :mischief:

First of all, I want to clarify something. MP, you said in the initial post that only military builds in cities other than the capital are allowed. Does that mean no aqueducts/hospitals? If not, then 12-14 tiles per city is pointless, and we all need to think about new city placements. If they are allowed, I have a dotmap prepared for the next ten cities (which will surely be messed up by Sumerian expansion, but it is a nice thought at least).

Speaking of future cities, the position of the rivers and the Sumerian expansion make things a bit tricky in terms of using all available space while at the same time not building useless cities. I wanted as many cities on rivers as possible, so there are a couple of tight builds in my plan.

Finally, a 20k build in the capital is a possibility, but with the restrictions on builds outside of the capital, we would have to stop expanding rather quickly. I think that with the military focus, a military victory is a better focus. But I am up for whatever everybody wants.

And my proposed dotmap:

You're totally right! See I knew I'd miss something. We need to maximize rivers and lake tiles, otherwise towns are stuck at 6 max.

We are definitely going for military victory - conquest or domination - which ever one is faster. That means if we capture ToA allong the way we'll probably go domination.

I'm gonna redo the dotmap, Yaype. There's still towns with too much tiles.

How does everyone feel about trying Feudalism? Lot's of unit support for low population towns.

Good to get the aqueduct/hospital thing cleared up. ;)

With 6 as the max size for the majority of our cities, I would have to say that Feudalism is the way to go. That should be interesting--I have never once used that govt.

If we want to try to get as many river cities as possible, I would say go for the ivory with the next city, put the third city on the same river as Karakorum, then put the fourth and fifth cities on the river by Sumer (this assumes that we take out the Sumerians rather early, because one of the cities is going to have to be close to Sumer and will not have any cultural buildings).

After that, cities to the SE should be the priority. That river with all the floodplains to the North is great for growth, but we need production, and all that grassland will get us some nice cities.

Just remember--each non-fresh water city only needs 7--this includes the city square itself--unique (and productive) squares to be worth building.

Good plans Yaype.

For coastal cities, count sea and coast tiles as zero/nothing, unless it's a whale. We don't need to be working water tiles when we can have land tiles.

Mine all grasslands (obviously besides the one cow in our capital).

Give river cities ~12 tiles, other towns give ~6. I'm not gonna be a perfectionist about this, but please think when placing cities.

Alright, I'll play tomorrow, most likely.

Feudalism is definitely the way to go with mostly Size 6 or less cities. I've never used this government either, so it will be interesting to see how well it works.
