MP9 - AWE Pangaea, Austria

If that archer on the hill could go east exploring justa tiny bit, that would be cool. I don't think settlers should be built over the next turnset, just military dudes.

Pre-Turns: A-OK

T 1.
Archer-Granary in Vienna

T 3-4 IT: Sumeria builds the oracle

T 7.
Bad (well, couldn't have expected it) worker move reveals 2 archers on a mountain heading towards us.

T 8.
Salzburg Archer-Archer
Find a choke-point-wannabe to the east.

IT: Third archer appears, closing onto Salzburg.

T 9.
IW->Wheel, due in 8 with reasonable loss.
Make an elite archer out of a reg sumerian one.

IT: reg archer crashes onto our spear from over the river and scratches but 1 HP off of it.

Summary: Granary chopped, archers produced. 2 irons visible, wheel in 7 @ -2gpt, which we can handle all the way to completion, even if it costs us a little. We've got a size 4 city coming up, so we'll need some lux taxes coming about and the silks to help out. It's set on a settler atm, no shield invested. Here's a peak at the north and south irons.

Sorry for that, I forgot an underscore in the link.

Research set to CB in 6

IBT : Vienna completes archer -> settler

9) 1525BC : -

IBT : -

10) 1500 BC : -

Attached is a pic. Iron will be connected in 2. We have a yellow border in the south of Graz, but no contact yet. I would put the next city 1NE of the horses near Salzburg. Regarding research CB was the cheapest. Horseback Riding would have taken 17 turns. That is too expensive in my opnion and we have to go towards Monarchy now. We can build swords soon. These will have to do for a moment.

Here is the save and the roster

Roster
MP - up !
ThERat - on deck
Leha
Beorn
markh - just played

looking good, we have the resources we need for now. Keep on expanding and we should be doing fine

I'm not convinced the CxxC placement is best for the inner core of cities. I like CxxxC and on a river whenever possible - aquaducts are too expensive. Make best use of tiles over the defensive postion.

1500
MM a bit...there was some waste.

1475
learn Ceremonial Burial.

1450
2 Sumerian archers and an Endiku pop out of the fog. The Iron town of Graz will be very hard to defend with mountains nearby.

1425
Sumerian archer dies.

1400
1375
1350
English warrior comes from the west. They are up Alphabet and Mysticism. we have nothing to trade.
Krems founded.

1325
Contact with Zulu warrior in the west - they are up Alpha, Myst, and Horseback.

1300
Sumeria completes the Oracle.

1275
Sumerian archer dies.
Mysticism discovered.
Landeck founded.

1250

- One turn of research has been put towards Alphabet. It's a tough choice for what to reseach next.

6 turns for Alphabet for Catapults and the Great Library (should we go for it?)
7 turns for Horseback Riding (a personal fav.)
16 for Polytheism for Monarchy (this seemed to take too long).

- Vienna and Salzburg need to build workers next turn. We need roads up north.

- The new northeast, for a skilled dotmatician. I would consider a city build 2E of capital on river.

That's what I wanted to say, we can't counterattack and our iron and incense will be brutally pillaged :)

In research I'd go for Math (cats), dogpile is coming.

If we have enough units, we can fortify spears on the hills and mountains and the AI will not touch them...that is, if we have units to spare.

lurker's comment: This map looks a lot like a flipped version of the AWE pangaea that I played. The semi-choke in my game had three civs on the other side, and I eventually won. I'm think that northwestern thing is a choke.

got it,

maybe we should try and settle a town in the east on the potential choke.

My normal gameplaying tendency would be to build on the horse. It's unfortunate that it is not a true 1 tile chokepoint. We have just met 2 new civs during my turns and we need to expect to kill off their units first. I don't know the best way to dotmap that. I would see us building up there in 25 or so turns.

Again, should we go for the Great Library? We need to start it soon if so.

Personally, I'm a long time addict of TGL But in AW games even I understand that sometimes bunch of units is more valuable than TGL.
In short I vote to start prebuild in Landeck, and if we have hard times defending ourselves skip it.

I would agree with a prebuild and a shot for the TGL.

I would put a spear on the Iron at Graz. The AI normally avoids attacking fortified spears on a hill if he can get around it. Graz is on a hill and with walls it should be able to stand for some time.

I'd be for a prebuild, and see how it goes. I wouldn't mind switching it to a library at some point, in the worst case scenario.
