MP9 - AWE Pangaea, Austria

IT we defend against those units losing only 1, Babylon is dropping 4 knights at Goigouen
and shows up with 23 knights in the south, will delay expansion until that stack is cleared

Hmm these emperor AIs are either on steroids or too many AW games are playing with the Rat's mind.

 sorry guys, forgot to delete that line from another SG...don't worry, there are no knights, in fact I have cleared almost all units, keep on expanding, things look good

A little thought. In normal games I prefer horsemen nine times out of ten to swords. The retreat, extra movement, and better upgrading makes them more worthwhile to me. I'm finding in AW games that I have several out of date units running around and no cash for upgrading.

So I'm thinking now that in the AA the best units are spear, catapults and archers. When Iron is available, no more archers, only swordsmen. The units can be upgraded cheaply for 30 gold each.

Are horses worth building in AW for their retreat and extra movement?

It might be ok to build the odd one, a few horses can help to clear the last unit of a stack since they can retreat afterwards. But, I agree, swords for now, then MDI and later knights. Once we can get knights, we would want many of them.

I connected the horse to work that tile itself. For now, I think we should really expand towards the choke in the east. I am surprised how weak the AI response is so far. Maybe I played too many AWDG or AWD :crazyeye:

everything's looking good. switch Vienna to worker after the sword. I'd prefer to keep Vienna under pop 7 because it has a granary and can build workers/settlers as needed. Other cities, especially Salzburg, can go above pop 6 for a better production core.

I see England has decided to build on the choke for us...is this a good thing? Are there any strategies we could use to take advantage of this? Perhaps a couple fortresses with 1-2 spears and an archer or catapult would deter them from coming that way at all?

Notice anything scary about this pic?

Literature next turn, research is at 20%.
If we want to merge more workers into Landeck, we'll need to bring MP in it, and we need the few troops we've got over there.
Sumeria has a heavy (1 vet 1 reg sword, 1 reg archer, more coming shortly in all likeliness) line of attack around the corner, prepare for some tough brawls soon.
It might be wise to send a lot of troops onto the hills and mountains to prepare for the sumerian assault forces, in hopes they go around through the plains, which would be better for us; however if they attack us straight up, our chances would have been better in the city. I'm not sure about the course of actions there so I leave it to be discussed.
Salzburg is working on the FP, but it can be reverted to a sword with no loss.

MPAW550.jpg

Where we send that new settler is also matter of discussion. Push Landeck to pop 7 ? Found somewhere in the remote NE? Found under the nose of Sumeria?

I've made an attempt at a dotmap. It's not that great, but it's the terrain's fault. :p

MP9_04.gif

We need to improve the terrian around Landeck (Great Library), and then merge workers. Question though: Research horseback riding next, or shut science off, pinning all our hopes on the Great Library?

I'd also like to say that I think we are stretched thin militarily. We will be up against MA units soon, and we will be fighting with AA units until the GL gets built...assuming it does, so things will be getting rougher. Despite my dotmap, I don't really think we need more than 1-2 more cities max.

Keep Vienna on sword->worker production at under size 7.

I got it.
What about research ? I think there will be still quite some time until TGL can be completed, so I would go on researching. When it is completed we can shut it off.

Is there anything worth researching? That's the question to me. Monarchy is the only tech we need in the AA until the great library completes...again, assuming it does.

I think we should go min research towards monarchy, so that at least, not all is lost if we blow it.

Here is a pic. I merged some workers into Landeck which works all workable tiles. Hopefully Sumeria will not build TGL first. The wonders in built in between did not raise our chances. I left the army unmoved, so next player can choose whether to attack the city or the MI and the city or have it healed. Below the two swordsmen S of the army is a settler. I think we should push towards the Sumerians. Anyway we have to expand otherwise it will get at least hard to win this. The English choke gets hotter. She constantly lands units now.

My idiot's first thoughts are that we could use it to clear away oncoming offensive MDI's while the standard swordsmen can take cities and land with less pain.
