MS new update

a few nights ago, i got this critical update from MS, something about a graphical security thing. Anyways, up untill that update, I was able to play a game with only minor issues, but now after the update, I have graphical artifacts all over the map, the floating diplomacy eyeballs, black random spots on the map, strange water artifacts, I cant even read any of the text that comes up now. I have the latest directX drivers, ati drivers for my ATI all in wonder 9700.

I used to use the Omega drivers, but decided not to use them because of issues with other games.

Anyone know of what im talking about? or if they have a similar issue relating to this update? Any ideas on fixes?

I am getting WMIxWDM errors while playing the game now since that critical update. I am also getting random reboots while playing. It was running nice until that stupid update.

Oh sugar, well done MicroSoft.... will have to check my game now.
The update concerned was to patch a severe security exploit with the .WMF graphic files granting remote access through the Graphic Rendering Engine. Granted they are not widely used on the Internet and MicroSoft originally wasn't going to release a patch to fix the WMF exploit. I guess an outcry from their biz users prompted such action. Such as shame after a good patch from Firaxis. MicroSoft have unknowly undone it for some people. Guess it the perils of PC gaming these days, I hope a workaround appears.

If you have restore on your computer, now would be a good time to use it.

Disconnect from internet, restore to an earlier date, restart and shutoff windows autoupdate, (Yes now you will have to manually update) shutoff your computer, reconnect to internet and play the game.

I restored and I am still getting the errors. They only appear in the newest update of the game. It also causes my computer to randomly reboot when playing. This newest update fixed a few things but broke others. I guess this game is going back on the shelf until the next update AGAIN.

i got my problem solved now. in the Catalyst Control (which I now really really hate the sluggish P.O.S.) I switch the AGP speed to 'Off' under the SMARTGART section. stupid thing. seems to have fixed everything now.
