MTCSG-01: Immac's Muti-Threaded Concurrent Succession Game -01

From the University of Birmingham: The term kibbitzer or kibitzer (and thus the verb to kibbitz or kibitz) comes from the chess cafes of central Europe at the start of the 20th century. A kibbitzer did not play chess, but watched other people playing, and possibly made comments on their play.

I always thought it was a Yiddish term but maybe not.

Spoiler Comments on Immaculate's turnset :
You advanced the position of my save very very well. The worst weakness of that save was the small population compared with the other saves. I whipped the heck out of our cities to build happiness buildings and elimininate unhappiness. Your use of the Pyramids and Police State was pure genius!

I concur with your selection of the former Mongol capital as the best site for Oxford University.

About the term kibbitzer, thanks for the lesson.

As far as the spoiler tags go, thanks. Talk like that some more and i'll start walking around on my heels and ruffling/fixing my collar repitively (i have an image of a biochem prof i used to have in mind). But thanks for the glowing (:nuke:) praise.

Sorry for the delay, things have been hectic, at least I beat pholky

Spoiler :

Went for the llama save. Did terribly, don't pick this save.

Switch to slavery as we need to whip ourselves back into this game.

We're at -10gpt at 60% ouch!

Mansu completes Taj Mahal 2 turns in. Oh well, we can do with the money.

Banking comes in and we switch immediately to Mercantilism as we have no foreign trade routes.

I pick Constitution next as no-one has it currently. Although mansu who seemingly has everything has it a couple of turns later. This is a complete mess now. There;s only one thing for it now and that's a domination win so back to war. Sorry GK.

We get a GS that immeditaely goes into an academy in Madrid.

The military gets bogged down outside of Turfan and war weariness takes hold. This is going to sh*t.

Constitution comes in but no-one will trade with me . Revolt to Representation. Switch to no religion and that's enough for Qin. Trade Nationalism for Engineering and some change.

Decide enough is enough and call a truce to my ill fated Mongolian venture. I get some cash though.

I cancel all deals with Mansu as he is running away and it gets me more diplo points with Toko and Qin.

Well I got the economy to +22 gpt at 60% but everything else still sucks.

I at least have one military sucess and take the barbarian city of Hun.

I'd have more pics and stats, but i know frankcor's gonna work his magic on my save and produce a beautiful, color-coded, 3pg chart w/power point presentation

And i accidently played one extra turn ~

Are you happy now? :D

pholkhero: looks like you accidentally forgot the save.

Well Pholk, i must say you are a bit cryptic. I don't understand some stuff.

ALSO: damn, double settles!!

Whats that all about?

pholkhero said:
ALSO: WTH! otrar must die!

Whats this all about then?

@Ozbenno and Pholk:

Even one screenshot would be nice if you would be so willing... :)
we can open up the save but if anyone decides to lurk (God help them), they probably would enjoy the read more (and understand better) if they had a picture or two to look at.

I know, i know about the screenies, but a)in this type of game, it's a little less relevent, esp now that Frankcor does such wonderful work, and b)it was late and i thought the report was worth more than waiting another day to edit the screenies in.

Now, re: cryptic msgs ~ like, d'uh ~ don't you know that #1 means that we've got 2 new cities on our island that aren't ours. in fact, there's a malinese one to the south foudned near those sheep (just where i was headed with that settler!) and a Mongolian one to the east, near the original copper on our continent.

#2 of coure, means that Otrar is the name of the Mongolian city just on the Mongolian contient 3 tiles from Karakorum. haven't i sent you to the pholk-to-english dictionary??

Why ozbenno's not got any, i've got no idea. I think he's just lazy. ;) :)

edit: when i post teh saev, i'll edit in my pics ~

AHHHH..... it all makes so much sense now.

Hehe. You're always very funny Pholk but its the sort of funny that sometimes needs explaining :dunno: I guess thats why there's a pholk-to-english dictionary.

Speaking of unwanted friends on our island, in my play i got a chinese settler settling one tile off the coast in the middle of ice near the beavers. I decided that its a great little city and i don't worry about it because its gonna drain the Chinese economy without ever providing anything back (it will take a LONG time before he can get the beavers hooked up- he'll want to build culture and a worker frist from the useless arctic tiles- and by then the game will be decided).

Oh, my!

Now I'm strutting around like Immaculate's chem prof, ruffling my collar.

Well, I tried updating the geneology, but you forgot to tell us what save you used? How can I figure that out and still produce a beautiful, color-coded, 3pg chart w/power point presentation at the same time? Sheesh!

llama's ~ it was the one i had the LEAST hand in :D

edit: pics and save added

So, i guess its A-team's turn.
Go ahead Remconius, Kanga_DU, LlamaCat, and Frankcor whenever you are ready.

I played from Immaculate's save. No chart. No analysis. This was a simple seat-of-the-pants, kick-the-tires, feels-right decision. In my opinion, none of the other saves offers us any chance of beating Mansa. Immaculate's notions about pillaging the Mali homeland makes more sense than any other strategy I am capable of piecing together with my limited cranial capacity. not to mention weak Civ skills. Oh, and did I mention I'm not any good at coming up with strategies?

Round 9 -- 20 turns -- 1550->1650 AD

Spoiler Round 9 Turn Report :

Inherited Turn (1550 AD) I took a look at our cities using the F1 screen to sort, filter and to plan specialization.

Here we are, sorted by Hammers:
mt38.jpg

For you lurkers, Toldeo is our National Epic city. Cordoba, Beshbalik, Turfan and Ning-Hsia are producing almost as many hammers as Madrid and they are all half its size. One of them will become our Ironworks city but that's not going to happen in this round. We need a ton of beakers to finish Chemistry before we can research steel; an even heavier ton of beakers will be needed for that.

Beakers: I concur with Immaculate that Karakorum is a good choice for Oxford University. As you can see here, it will need some development as we build some Universities to qualify for it.
mt39.jpg

Keep in mind, the picture is with 0% research (we're upgrading Galleys to Galleons). Most of these cities have banks in their near futures.

Gold: Here are our top 10 money makers (@30% research):
mt48.jpg

Those former Khan cities will move up the list when Forbidden Palace is finished.

Great People Points: Barcelona is number 1, no other cities are close in either total points or points per turn:
mt37.jpg

For a GP Farm, there is not a lot of food available here. I planned to spend some worker cycles farming over one or two of those plains cottages. Or maybe better, Windmill those two grassland hills. And we'll need a University there very soon so we can hire more scientists. Madrid is cranking out 27 points/turn but I decided to focus it on commerce instead.

I'll be refering to these tables as I make build choices over the next 20 turns. But I plan to really focus on forming 4 or 5 3-unit pillaging teams (Pikeman-Musket-Conquistador) or something like that and get them started in Mali. A second Conquistador would allow us to pillage an improvement and underlying road each turn. My secondary goal will be to get us up to 60% research by building commerce improvements and through pillaging profits.

With all that in mind (is my head pounding yet?), I looked for opportunities to micro-manage our cities. There were not many. I switched from working a coastal tile to the beaver camp in Santiago for a net gain of 1 g/turn. Replacing the Engineer there with a Merchant gained us another 3 g/turn. Maintenance there is a ... er ... well, you know ... like a difficult woman. In our Dye city, Libyan, I switched from working a grass hamlet to a plains cottage, trading 1 commerce/turn and food for a hammer. The commerce will come back when the cottage goes hamlet and we really needed the hammer there. Along the same lines, I swapped a grass cottage for a plains cottage in Samarqand, on the north end of our western island.

Next I called up our neighbors looking for trade opportunities. Mansa is furious and won't talk. He's got to get over this Buddhist/Jewish thing. Soon we'll give him something to really be furious about. Qin agreed to pay us 2 g/turn for Spices and Toku is too poor to have anything to trade with us.

And finally, I pressed Enter to start the first turn. As the turn processed, I thought up some mendacity that I would tell my family or friends if they ask me "What did you do all weekend?"

Turn 1 (1555 AD) Cordoba trained a Conquistador, started a Musketman(5). Toledo trained a Musketman, started a Conquistador(2). Beshbalik trained a Pikeman, started another(4). Karakorum constructed a Lighthouse, started a Library(9) -- I'm paying attention to the tables. :) Ning-hsia constructed a Granary, started a Courthouse(15).

Turn 2 (1560 AD) Old Sari, the last Mongol city to come out of revolt, started work on a Granary.

Turn 3 (1565 AD) Cordoba trained a Musketman, started another(4). Toledo trained a Conquistador, started a Galleon(2).
Alhazen (Great Scientist) born in Barcelona-> sent to catch the ferry to Karakorum

Our first pillage team is complete, along with a boatload of Conquistadors -- 3 of 'em. I'm shooting to declare war when I can deliver 3 full pillage teams to Mali along with 3 extra Conquistadors to form 3 4-man teams when they land. Then keep forming additional teams and ferry them across the sea. We've got a small window of time where our Galleons will not be vulnerable to attack.

To be continued ...

Spoiler Round 9 continued :
Turn 4 (1570 AD) Turfan constructed Forbidden Palace to the tune of +19 gold/turn for our Empire. The citizens of Turfan set to work on a Barracks(4). Old Sari constructed a Granary, started a Library, mainly for the :culture:.

A Spanish revolt took place in Ningbo, the Chinese ice/beaver-city that polluted our southern tier. We'll learn if the citizens want to join our empire in 3 turns.

Our second pillage team is complete and loaded upon its Galleon. We await only the arrival of our final Galleon and 2 more foot-units. I plan to start the pillaging at Djenne.
mt40.jpg

It's not as likely to have a huge garrison as Timbuktu and there is at least 1 happiness resource there. Happiness will be a high-priority target of our pillagers, followed next by strategic resources. The Copper mine north of Djenne will be a great beachhead, especially with guerilla-promoted Musketmen. I think it will be smart to deliver all 3 teams to the same spot and have them stick together for a few turns for an initial onslaught as the enraged Mali counter-attack. Of course, there's always a chance that Djenne will be very lightly defended but I don't see that as a realistic wish. Besides, I don't plan on bringing any siege weapons along on this expedition.

IBT: Mansa Musa completed the Kremlin. Wonderful.

Turn 5 (1575 AD) Turfan trained a Galleon, started a Musketman(2). What a production powerhouse! Sooner or later it will require a lighthouse for more food but for now, it's going to continue to pump out military units. Salamanca, not a production powerhouse by any stretch of the imagination, constructed an Observatory, started a Barracks(5). Beshbalik trained a Pikeman, started another(3). New Sari constructed a Confucian Monastery, started a Barracks(7).

Alhazen finally reached Karakorum. He's unable to build an Academy there because there already is an Academy there. Sheesh. I took down the "Science (academy)" sign because I mistook it to mean we needed to build an academy in Karkorum. Oh well, I sent the scientist back to Alhazen. He can could either build an academy, join the city staff or lightbulb a portion (1917/2304) Printing Press when he gets there. Printing Press leads to Replaceable Parts and we've got workers itching to be taught how to build Lumbermills.

Turn 6 (1580 AD)

Turn 7 (1585 AD) Cordoba trained a Musketman, started a Conquistador. TOldeo completed a Musketman, started a Conquistador(2). Santiago constructed a Grocer, started a Bank(20). Karakorum constructed a Library, started a Confucian Monastery(8). A University would require 20 turns and I wanted to get the Monastery before it goes obsolete. The library permitted us to hire a second scientist in the city there.

Alhazen returned to Barcelona. He could build an Academy there. Please please please, tell me if you think I'm doing the math wrong here:
mt41.jpg

We are currently running the slider at 30% for half the time, 40% for half the time. That means between 43 and 45 beakers per turn out of Barcelona, call it 44. A 50% boost from an Academy would mean an additional 22 beakers/turn (44 x 0.50 = 22).
But using the diagram above, 30% of 19 base:commerce: = 5:science: -- 40% yields 7 so call it 6:science:. The +35% goes to 85% (I think) with the Academy so it's 6:science: + 27:science: from Specialists * 1.85 = 61:science: Total Research or a gain of 16:science:/turn.

So which is it? 22 or 16:science/turn? I'm sooo confused. And what's up with the rounding off of Civ4 vanilla? 45.9 beakers is only 45 beakers in vanilla-arithmetic.

So anyways, joining him to the city seems like a sure loss at 6:science: per turn even if it is boosted 35% from buildings.

So even if it's 22/turn for an Academy, it would take 87 turns to break even with the gain we get from lightbulbing Printing Press. Those 1917:science: are equivalent to 6 turns of research at our current output of 324:science:/turn. That means we get 6 turns of an additional :commerce: for every Town and Village we are working now.

Well, it took about a half hour to decide that I'm going to put Alhazen to sleep and think about it some more later. (just kidding -- I plan to lightbulb Printing Press after we finish Chemistry). I started using binary research for the remainder of my turnset.

Ningbo came out of revolt but remained in Chinese hands. I noted that Qin has Riflemen now -- be certain that the Mali does too.

Turn 8 (1585 AD) Beshbalik trained a Pikeman, started another(3) -- will he convert to a Grenadier? (as it turned out, no) Murcia constructed a Library with the help of some chopping of outside-the-fat-cross forests and started a Forge(17). Turfan constructed a Barracks, started a Pikeman(4).

The third Pillaging team has boarded ship and 4 Galleons of brave Conquistadors, Musketmen and Pikemen set sail for the southwestern corner of Mali. It could very well be a suicide mission but we realize it's our only chance to stop Mansa from building a Spaceship. I'm surprised he hasn't started building parts for it already seeing that he's had a continent to himself for a ll these years.

Turn 9 (1590 AD) Madrid constructed a Bank, started an Aqueduct(3). It's grown unhealthy but an Aqueduct would require 7 turns. Toledo trained a Conquistador,s tarted a Musketman(2).

Turn 10 (1595 AD)

To be continued ...

Spoiler Round 9 continued :
Turn 11 (1600 AD) We discovered Chemistry, started Printing Press, due next turn with Alhazen's contribution of 1959:science: (up from 1917?). Barcelona constructed a Courthouse, started a Bank(40). Salamanca constructed a Barracks, started a Grenadier(9).

mt42.jpg

Of course, lay out the red carpet for them, knaves! And let them start working on a Forge(40-likely less).

Mansa's culture keeps us so far at sea we can't see inside his cities. Oh well, let's give him that wake-up call:
mt44.jpg

Our troops get a first look at Mali territory in many centuries. Here's what they see:
mt45.jpg

Whew, no Riflemen. Looks like Mansa won't be drinking wine for very much longer.

Well, get a load of that -- we're ahead of Mansa in points. But not in power:
mt43.jpg

But we're not that far behind. Let's hope quality is more important than quantity.

Our Galleons headed back to our eastern shores. We needed Frigates to escort them very soon. Mansa has Astronomy too.

IBT: The Mali hit us with a Catapult and then 2 Knights and a Longbowman. They all died. Our Conquistadors did all the defending. Then Mansa switched to Vassalage and Theocracy. We're going to be seeing some well-promoted units. And then he started a Golden Age. Freakin' great! My timing was impeccable! I prayed that he have 2 turns of revolution during that Golden Age to get his civics arranged.

Turn 12 (1610 AD) Our scientists developed printing presses which started printing up an additional 19:gold:/turn. I told them to start work on Replaceable Parts(~7).

Madrid constructed a Harbor, started a Frigate(5). Toledo trained a Musketman, started a Frigate(1). Beshbalik trained a Pikeman, started a Frigate(4).

I considered civics changes. I was not willing to give up Free Speech and its +2:gold: from Towns in exchange for +2 experience points by going with Vassalage. Going from Pacificsm to Theocracy will cut our Great People rates in half but give us +2 experience points, enough to pop out Level 2 units from barracks. No brainer. Revolt to Theocracy. We gain an additional +2:gold: Did I mention how much Immaculate likes that spiritual trait?

I sent one 4-unit pillaging team off the hill at DjenneWe to pillage the winery west of the city. The remainers pillaged the Mine and started digging in to heal. One of our Conquistadors killed a Mali Catapult that foolishly came to a halt at the foot of the hill.

IBT: Mansu hit us on the hill with a Catapult and Longbowman -- their widows grieved that night.

Turn 13 (1615 AD) Toledo trained a Frigate, started another(2). Samarqand constructed a Courthouse, started a Granary. New Sarai constructed a Barracks, started a Frigate(12). Turfan trained a Pikeman, started a Frigate(5).

Tokugawa was by now pleased with us. He traded 1:gold:/turn and Cow for Corn and Rice. And I threw in Education in exchange for him declaring on the Mali. Dogpile! I don't expect a lot out of him because he doesn't have Astronomy yet but his galleys can reach Mali -- maybe he'll pillage some nets for us. Qin would accept Chemistry for war with Mansu but I feel right now we can handle the Mali on our own. So I took Economics and 30 gold in exchange for Chemistry with him. Besides, maybe Toku will bribe him to go to war for us in another turn or two.

IBT: After no activity last turn, Mansu hit us with a Catapult, and 3 knights. We suffered our first losses: a Conquistador and a Musketman.

Turn 14 (1620 AD) Cordoba trained a Conquistador, started a Grenadier(7). Seville constructed a Bank, started a Frigate. Toledo trained a Frigate, started a Musketman(1). Chinook constructed a University, stared a Grenadier(9).

Our first Frigate to reach the eastern ocean gained an experience point by sending a Mali Caravel to the bottom.

I recalled a second pillaging team back up the hill to reinforce our position there. We lost a wounded Conquistador trying to kill an Catapult approaching the hill. A second Conquistador finished the job. Two smaller teams (Conq/Musk/Pike and Gren/Musk/Pike) arrive at Timbuktu's coast to advance our pillaging efforts. We now have 15 units on his continent.

IBT: Our hilltop units got hit by a Catapult, Knight and Musketman (This just in: Mansa has Gunpowder). We lost another Conquistador, he lost the Knight.

Turn 15 (1625 AD) Toledo trained a Musketman, started a Grenadier(2). Beshbalik trained a Frigate, started a Conquistador(4). Samarquand constructed a Granary, started a Barracks(6). Karakorum constructed a Confucian Monastery, started a University(28). War Weariness had started appearing so I notched the Culture slider up to 20%. I knocked Science down to 60% -- so much for binary research. We can go to Police State next turn.

We killed the attacking Catapult and Musketman north of Djenne.

Turn 16 (1630 AD) We discovered replaceable parts. Hordes of Spanish workers start building replaceable lumbermills in forests across our empire. I told our scientists to work on something even more useful -- replaceable rifles!

Madrid trained a Frigate, started a Grenadier(6). Old Sarai constructed a Library, started a Work Boat -- fishing will cokmmence in 5 turns.

We killed another Catapult at the foot of the Djenne hill. Toledo trained a Grenadier, started a Conquistador. Turfan trained a Frigate, started a Grenadier(6).

Turn 17 (1635 AD) Moving units around, pillaging and healing on top of the hill.

Turn 18 (1640 AD) Toledo trained a Conquistador, started a Grenadier(2). Salmanca trained a Grenadier, started a Frigate(6). Ning-hsia constructed a Courthouse, started a Library(11).

Two more Mali Caravels were sent to watery graves by our Frigates.

Turn 19 (1645 AD) Cordoba trained a Grenadier, started a Conquistador. Beshabalik trained a Conquistador, started another(4). Old Sarai trrained a Work Boat, started a Courthouse(4).

War Weariness kicked up another notch, reminding me to revolt to Police State.

Riflemen started appearing in Mansa's cities.

IBT: We got hit by 4 riflemen, losing a unit each time. Note to next player: make sure all our stacks have Grenadiers in them :(

Turn 20 (1650 AD) Seville trained a Frigate, started a Conquistador(8). Toledo trained a Grenadier, started a Conquistador(1). Murcia constructed a Forge, started a Courthouse(9).

Darn, I wasted some hammers. The Work Boat at New Sarai wasn't needed -- fishing nets were already erected. Oh well, I'll put him to sleep in New Sarai. Something's bound to get pillaged in the near future.

That's it.
Here's the facts, ma'm:

This will be a production race. Can we produce and ferry units across the sea faster than Mansa can kill them so that we can pillage him into the stone age? Meanwhile, we need to get Riflemen and Cannon so that then we can start taking cities away from him. But even if we take his entire continent, I don't think that will be sufficent territory for a domination victory.

Hi guys, life is little busy before christmas, maybe I can play tonight or tomorrow.

Sounds good. I think most people are in the same boat as you. I hope you are having a very merrry and festive christmas. The staff x-mas party is usually a great time too; did someone knock over a table full of food in a drunken attempt at dance at YOUR x-mas party?
:xmascheers:

I.
