[MULT] Pitboss Worldbuilding Challenge

Just wanted to point out that I don't have Polynesia, or any DLC, for that matter(besides the two expansions and Mongolia). That said, though, don't keep any civs out that you want in just on my account.

Dude! Get the gold edition! It's the Steam Sale Encore for a few hours, this is your chance! Get Inca and Spain, Babylon, Korea! Get the Wonders packs as well, incase we have to use those. It's real cheap (I think).

And @42, Continents sucks. Fractal is 10x better.

Okay, uh, I'm wrong. You missed your chance. Everything is bumped up now. I know a guy who can get you still cheap-DLC. I'm happy to contact him about getting you rest of the stuff & things. What (currently) do you have for Civ V? Other than the expansions?

I'd be up, it would mean I could roleplay as a nation, but have never played a Pitboss game before.

But I'm not exactly sure how much time I would be able to spend, and how much I would be expected to write (I have a rather easy schedule though).

But I'm also worried about my "writing" skills.

And for what's it worth, a Steam group could be organized.

I saw you were referred over here by CPM (thanks for spreading the word btw). So let's address some of your problems that you noted.

1.) I have no idea how a Pitboss server will work when I host it (even the mechanics of how you play. I looked them up and I kinda grasp it). Ideas of nationalism definitely began to spread after the Common Era began, so you'd be more role-playing several towns that morph into cities, and then a united empire (or whatever gov.) as the game goes on. That's really a bad example, I'm just trying to clarify that it won't be exactly "roleplaying a nation". Think of it more as recording the history of a people and their nation, and you get to morph the culture and history directly as you record it. You understand? I'll try to post an example of what I'm looking for at the bottom (from my rough notes), but if you go look at the Bodian Republic story, that's a good example of the finished product (first five-hundred years only, there's much more of the story).

2.) Allegedly, Pitboss is built that users must make a turn within a day or else they will have no movement (yet still hammers and food), so it won't be a GIANT playthrough or city-building for hours, but instead a light half-hour activity each day. (half-hour may be altered. For the first two thousand years, things occur slowly. You'll have time to develop new city-names, staple foods, other bits and pieces of lore to add. Then as the Renaissance hits, things'll happening each turn for a while). If you have an easy schedule, this shouldn't be too much of a problem. But, you decide.

3.) Writing skills! Okay. The best thing to have is knowledge. I'm currently reading the Preindustrial City by Gideon Sjoberg for the sole purpose of worldbuilding better. I've gone to Shared Worlds for dos anos and seen so many ing pieces of worlds I know how to craft better ones. This would be my advice to you. Read a lot and keep at it. Look at the Mass Effect universe, IRL civilizations, Game of Thrones, anything you can. Develop something based around that. Writing comes easier once you know what's going on and why it's going on. This leads into point four.

4.) I think a subforum will be created to help aid the development of this challenge-world which I'm calling Operation ______. I dunno. Operation Aztec Wig? Operation Pitcream? Operation Lorebeard? I'm sure we'll have a poll to decide if we get more people (six slots remaining, maybe five). This subforum will not only have places for descriptions, rumors, and movement of immigrants and ideas 'tween regions, but it will also have questions of the day and peer-review. I can gladly take a look at your rough notes or second drafts anytime. I bet others can too (I at least hope). I'll be constantly posting things like "how was the wheel discovered in your civilization?", "who is the current ruler/ruling party? How have they kept power?", or "are other races viewed differently in the capital? Is there major discrimination?". This will hopefully help you build up a better world. Use your imagination and keep at it.

I forgot something
5.) The length of rough note entries will vary per turn, but I usually do a paragraph or two. It comes easily as I can reference all the Civ V demographics and beliefs and maps for ideas and relationships to write about (i.e: I noticed the Ottomans had five silver to trade, I made the Ottomans a dwarf-like island culture). As time passes you'll write more. I have thirty-two pages of note for my Russian game (and that's not including 1872-20??). I think it would make sense to edit our notes into a more fleshed-out version as we go, perhaps having checkpoints every era to write five-ten pages. I'm not sure how this can be handled considering my understanding with Pitboss, perhaps someone more adept in the field can answer this question (please)?

So that's just about it. I'm happy to take questions.

I'll get you a figure. People usually buy stuff in bulk for this reason, to sell it off during the low-parts of the Steam year for a slightly higher price than the purchase. I'll contact my man.

People besides Steam can sell it?

The price of the DLC is gonna be around 9 to 10 USD. Can you handle that?

I probably barely could, but I don't think I want to spend that much when I'm so low already.

So, if you want DLC to be in it, I'll just drop out so I won't hinder you.

I really don't think we need DLC civs...I mean, without them there will still be 37 Civs to choose from! So, unless you really wanted Korea, The Inca, Babylon, Denmark, or Polynesia, I say we just don't worry about 'em.

I agree about not needing DLC. If we want a lot of people to take part, we'll probably want to go with the basics. I'll miss Polynesia and Denmark, but I'm assuming we'll be using different names for our empires anyway. Also, I just want to say that as a linguist and medievalist, I'll be following a naming theme that resembles Welsh or Irish. i.e. the empire, cities, and leader name will resemble Gaelic or old English names.

Yeah, if we stick with the actually game-changing expansions and ignore the extra Civs (except Mongolia, but that's free with all Civ versions) we'll be able to get more players.
Incidentally, as I'm either completely unimaginative or certifiably insane, I'll be playing Arabia as Raspur. Not sure what I'll be naming my other cities, but...

So maybe I'll finally get to be a contemporary of the Majah, instead of just being his successor all the time. :D

Seriously? Okay, I'm fine with leaving out DLCs (Polynesia was gonna be my second choice), but then CPM took Arabia? Rrraaghfh. Arabia was my first choice! I already write down city names! Names if cities and civilizations will happen at the end of each era, when we have down-time to rename cities and nations. These names might change throughout history too.

I also got a sixth (seventh?) worldbuilder to sign up (we had dinner, talked it over). So we have six or less people to recruit now.

In conclusion: rrawrg Arabia will be mine!

Going along with my Gaelic theme so far, I suppose Boudicca would be a decent choice. I tend to emphasize religion when I'm playing Civ, but then again, I don't usually do much world-building on religion in my fiction. Hiawatha has units moving through forest and jungle quickly, which screams elves (and even if this is too realistic for elves, forest people are pretty cool), so he's probably my first choice.

I'll pick Rome as I tend to build tall and the production bonus helps somewhat.

Also, as a side note, my internet connection has been very unstable for some time now. It sometimes switches on and off at random and the offline time has reached almost 5 minutes once, usually being from 5 seconds to half a minute.

If we cannot create two Arabias, I'll probably be Spain, then.

but i wanted to be polynesia. :(

but in reality i probably wont be joining you. been real busy lately. though if i can i may join in as the shoshone. tiny chance though,so dont save a spot for me.

edit: some changes in my schedule have increased my odds for being on game. so once a day i can just enter my move if i read it correctly? still unsure, but its a chance. i would love to play with heerlo.
