Hiyall
Im pretty new to this site, but ive been playin Civ since the original version on my old 486. Now things are better, I bought PTW when it arrived, and ive finally sorted out a broadband connection.
The trouble is i am craving some serious multiplayer games, i like to throw myself headlong into serious diplomacy, manouvers and so forth. I am becoming increasingly frustrated by the AI playing solo, it is almost as though i can predict what is going to happen.
The trouble is everybody i know has absolutly 0 interest in strategy (heathens!!! ) so playin against friends is not an option.
Perhaps i would feel more at home becoming involved in the democracy games i keep hearing about, i just dont know.
If anyone has any suggestions on what sort of game i should be playing, or if anybody takes part in regular online games then let me know
PS-has anyone actually managed to get a halfway good game of civ through gamespy? I swear the peeps on that just join and leave games for fun- and of course to nark me!

Forget it. Don't even attempt to play over the net unless you have the patience of a saint. See my thread or my reply to another person asking what multiplayer is like for details.

Although players leaving early, or cancelling games that are almost in play is common across the board.

Warcraft III is plagued as such too - as was Warcraft II, or any game where one cannot just connect ad-hoc.

Still, it is a frustrating problem.

Hey Stoned Raider, if you're looking for ppl to play over the net, pm col, he is from lankashire as far as I know, maybe he has a good ping for you to play. Furthermore, if you dread 'humorous' ppl leaving a MP-game early, join one of the internet ladder sites. You'll get into games with more serious players over there. I don't have a link ready for you, but you should be able to find them..

I recommend you stick with it, when you learn who's who on the net you can generally set up your games with reliable players who don't pull out after five minutes. I start games with six players figuring four of them will be around for the long haul. I've had a number of games continue over multiple sessions that were strategy fests, very satisfying. It's amazing how many guys will show up the next night. I hate to be a snob but if you play with the older crowd you'll be dissapointed less often. Yeah, ladder is an excellent option too, those guys never bail but the better players tend to fatten up on the newbies so if you're any good, good luck getting an interesting match.

Thanks for replyin guys!!! Ill hang in there. U cant beat sittin down, gettin mashed and having the chance to kick the butt of another human being, i spose there is always half life for that immediate feeling of power, but civ of course takes u to that whole other level, in the meantime ill carry on with wippin 8 AI opponants, and maybe even have the ordacity to move up a level. I do find regent is the most entertaining, and judging by other peoples posts, this does seem to be the general response, how u guys last up there on the higher levels is beyond me, ill have to be prepared for a multiplayer beating i reckon! cheers!

From my limited experience, I'd say that if youre winning on Regent, you'll pull about average in the multiplayer.

If you're not a militaristic player, you'll find that you'll need a larger military in MP than in SP to hold humans off.

I'm surprised in MP games that people aren't more competitive in the tech race. But I digress...

Playing people you know makes it much easier to finish a MP game. But even then some people quit when they know they don't have some ressource.

You're right about the larger military: I never had more than one turn of peace with any human player. ;)

lol warmonger ;) the game i played i was like the leader of the UN (not literaly we had set up our own little trust-based UN of me, carthage and celts) and finally china attacked the little celts and we all went to war and wiped him out then the stuped thing crashed but well we played it was the MOST fun game multiplayer ever, just the diplomacy online is superb with all the backstabbing and alliances and stuff if you can get into a game with no crashes, lag or quiters you'll have a great time.
