WELCOME TO CFC!

Ahh, I got to be the first to say it. Anyway, there are several different ways to play multiplayer.

1. Hotseat- this is where you and a friend or friends play the game on one computer. You take a turn, your friend sits down for his turn, and you keep rotation.

2. PBEM- also known as Play By E-mail. This is the forum for PBEM so that's what you will find here. The way this works is you take yoru turn, end your turn and save the game. Then you send that save file to your friend, he loads it, plays his turn, ends his turn and saves it, then e-mails it back to you. As you can probably tell, this makes the games last a long time.

3. Direct connection- this is where you play with people directly over the net in real time. The games are usually laggy and slow going, but you can usually play one in about 2-4 hours. Some are shorter, some are longer.

All these games are set up from the main screen when you start Civ3. Click on the tab called multiplayer. There you will make a choice on how to play, either over the net, hotseat, PBEM. Pick which one you want. Then set the game up however you want, hit the launch button, and play. It's really pretty easy. If any of these instructions are unclear, let me know and I can try to talk you through it better.

Dogboy, I'd like to figure out how to MP online, too. I'm on a LAN with my wife's computer and seem to be behind a router or firewall. I see the list of ports to open in the C3C booklet but don't know how to go about doing it. Know anything about port opening? I am running Windows ME.

You can try here. It's a sticky in the multiplayer forum by Chieftess. This might answer some of your questions. Just know up front that online play is vastly different than single player or PBEM in my opinion. In my experiences, it's a rush fest. Since the games don't last that long, most people pick civs with a very early UU. They get that UU and rush as fast as they can. When PTW first came out, it seemed like a lot of people loved doing the Impi rush. All they do is build like 10 Impi and search and destroy. If they lose, so what. They only lost 30 minutes or less of their life. If they win, so what. They only spent 30 minutes or less of their life. Next game! Rinse and repeat. Good luck finding better games than I did.

Thread for firewall

Looks like a lot of fooling around for some not-so-fun games. I'll stick with PEBM and GOTM, besides, I'm still working through the Conquest scenarios--it says there is a cool video at the end. When you win Homeworld you get a song by Yes. Homeworld is a cool game but the song was pretty lame, imho.
