Alright... I feel somewhat noobish.. or maybe even a lot more hahaha

I have never done multiplayer before, and I would like to try. I went online and logged in and everything, but there were no games available to play, even though everyone in the chat room was talking as if there were many many games to choose from. I assume it has to do with the incompatibility to ROM 2.5, but I'm not sure. I'm just wondering how I would get into a multiplayer game.

If anyone is up to playing with me, I'll do it. I'm just unfamiliar with the whole scene in general. If someone would like to explain it, it would me greatly appreciated. :)

For reference, I usually play on Noble, with domination victory. Huge maps, lots of civs, usually a Terra map or something similar.

EDIT
Yea, it seems to be a RoM issue, because I tried multiplayer for standard Civ 3.17, and a lot of games showed up. So perhaps no one is on.

Bump.

I'm being obnoxious I know, but I would like to try multiplayer with somebody.

Hehe. Well, you can't really play on the internet. There just isn't enough interest in any one PARTICULAR mod with a particular patch updated. You gonna have to end up playing with some friends you recuit in "real life" and play them via IP connection or LAN or something.

That being said, if you wish to play a multiplayer game with me, I could do it sometimes...although it is often hard to find a time for many people to commit at the same time. After all, you can't play a ROM game in a few hours.

Yeah, we play multiplayer, but there are a group of us willing to commit a lot of time to our games and to work together to make that time work out across time zones, etc. First you need the friends and a lot of patience. Hopefully you'll find some here, it is a lot of fun. If you have more than a few players the game is not so stable also, there will be more crashes and OOS.

not so many people are ready to play days on internet(i'm not sure how saving works).

RoM is designed for long games, maybe there should be "multiplayer RoM" which would be balanced for quick or blitz speed?

then games would only take few hours, right? :D

and then we would need to set a date when everyone who is willing to play could make it, such a date is probly hard to find..

when my buddy and i tried to hook up on the multiplayer gathering room, gamespy standard civ, there are no games available and when i went to create a new game as did he try, nothing showed up as well.

it looks like you cannot play ROM multiplayer without static IP direct play? is this gamespy or ROM?

let me know if there is a way around this other than direct IP, thanks one and all... :scan:

I'd like to try a multiplayer game too. I'm actually playing with my girlfriend a hotseat game, but I've never tried any other multiplayer mode. Besides, I can't really play with my girlfriend as we can't go to war with each other since she's afraid of it and if we'd start a war, she'd stop playing with me... I was thinking about a PBEM game but I think it can be too long to play. I wonder, is it possible to start a game in a simultaneous move mode and then to continue it like a pbem game? Sorry if it's a noob question, but hey, that's what I am regarding civ multiplayer games (although I play Civ since Civ I).

My experience with RoM multiplayer is 4-5 of us will start a simultaneous game on epic. We play several days a week for hours and expect it to take weeks to finish a game. That is, IF we finish it. Because this is a social activity for us, our goal seems to be to keep everyone in the game the whole way, but somehow to manipulate so that one of us wins at the end. It takes a LONG time, committed friends and a level of cooperation to play like this. I don't think we've ever managed a whole 790 turn game - at first the mod wasn't stable enough, so every time the mod was patched we'd upgrade and start new games. Then also if one gets taken out early or has an unplayable start, we start over. Some games are over with the first barbarian event, if the player is unlucky enough to have his spearman, archer and warrior taken out by three barbarian warriors... :)

I do believe that you can switch games from simultaneous to PBEM and back again, never done it, but remember reading it is set up to do that.

Is multiplayer game stable with RoM?
I know that there were a bug with Colonist/Pioneer. Is still stand, or it has been fixed?

BTW, I like to join to a MP game. Never played before.

@ Carwyn, thanks for your answer about switching mp mode.

@ E_Pluribus_Unum, there is a known bug with Colonist/Pioneer but there's also a "multiplayer fix" which should work. As I said, I'm playing a RoM v 2.5 game (NOT 2.51) with my girlfriend in hotseat mode and so far there hasn't been any crash although we both already have Pioneers. At the moment we're in the modern era, about 1900 (512 turn game) and we've discovered techs up to microchip and superconductors and everything's working fine. So I suppose the bug's fixed, but I'd rather wait the end of the game to say I'm sure about it.

If I'm not mistaken, on hotseat you play on the same PC with the same executable. There is no difference between handling the AI and a player. So if RoM is stable (and it is), the hotseat is too.
BUT, over TCP/IP the handling of the MP game is differs. Ha anybody experience on this case?

The build that we use now, ver 2.51 (without the extra civs) has been working very well for us. We DO use the Revolution portion. There is also a known problem with that for multiplayer that would not show up in a hot seat game - if the revolution popup shows for one player, it will show for ALL players. Also, if there is a choice to be made, you all have to make the same choice or it will crash. We have had some very odd things happen if we choose to bribe or any choice other than "reject" on that screen. If you bribe one that screen, you all have to agree and the money may or may not come out of everyone's treasury and seems to be returned later? Not really sure, but the only choice that is reliable from the revolution popup is to "reject". You CAN bribe a city from the city screen without OOS now. We did the colonist fix.

It's a bit limiting to have to reject on the Revolution popup, but otherwise we're over 600 turns into a 790 game and its only gone OOS a couple of times. I consider that quite stable and playable. You can also turn off the Revolution portion, its a great mod even without that. Expect to find a friend to play with and to play weeks to finish a game if you get a decent start and do well.

Great! Sounds me acceptable!
Do you think there are enough RoM player near CET time zones (me CET+1, Budapest) who want play MP?

As I said, I'd like to try a mp game; I'm in Trieste, Italy, so I should be on UTC+1 or UTC+2 depending on the season (daylight saving time); it should be the same timezone as Budapest. If you're going to start a mp game, let me know and I'll see if I can join in. :) Or I'll see if I can start one, and I'll let you know when I do it... I'll be away until tomorrow evening anyway, so I'll check this topic tomorrow and we'll see what we can do, if it's ok with you.

Before starting a MP.
I like Large and huge map (Perfectword) form normal to marathon speed at the level of Prince.
At start I'd say let it be a large map on epic speed summa 15 nation. Start at 17th of january around 15.00 (GMT).
Any suggestion, opinion, etc... ?

Wow lots of hits this post has had hahaha

@E_Pluribus_Unum - Those are actually pretty much the settings I play on too. Except I'm Noble instead of Prince. I'm not that good yet.

And 15:00 GMT might work.
That's 7:00 for me since I'm in California, but I don't have classes until 9/9:30, so that's probably the best time actually, granted it only gives me a couple hours. Sadly, the only times I would be available due to school on Mondays-Thursdays is any time in the mornings [14:00-17:00 GMT] and after school [about 23:30-2:00GMT] I might have to sit this first game out or just play on the weekends...

Well, it looks like I also have some kind of problem... I'm not yet so good to play on Prince level I guess and I think I could only play during the week after 20 GMT, because I get back from work at about 20 GMT and usually I'm away on weekends (January, 17th I won't be home for sure, unfortunately). :(

OK. Weekdays then. Mondays are no good for me but the others OK. Let's say 20th of january 20.00 (GMT). AI level depends on you.

That should be ok with me; I'd prefer Noble level unless you want to play alone after some turns... How many human players? Just the two of us or is there someone else interested? Should we ask in the multiplayer forum?
