Mump2 - AWDG Standard Pangaea

Upload is ridiculous slow and not working, I got it up from my mobile UMTS connection.

Checking our situation:
Our defense is still paper thin, lots of units in our land.
We have nearly nothing at the western front where the Hitties are advancing along the coast.
Also nearly nothing in the far east, Catarac (lonly spear).
Checking F3 confirms we have 9! gallics (6 in the armies in Otto and Persian lands) to defend 13 towns, who can say farmers gambit?

(1) 50AD
Bombard spear wit cats and kill him off with Gallic at Verul
Bombard 2 spears at Eboracum and attack both wounded spears, we kill them and get our 2 cats that seem have to be captured back.
Kill of horse in the open at Burdigale clean. (4-0)
That is all we can do this turn, other attacks would leave our expensive gallics exposed to counters.
Ping 2 dutch archer with cats at Catarc to make them retreat instead of pillaging.

Pillaging campaign in the Otto/Persian core continues, disconnecting Gordium from the rest of the persian empire while moving second
army towards Ottos, capure a worker on the way and disband it, no way he can make it home and no reason to slow down the army.
The other army isolates Izmit (the ivory town) and goes for the Otto iron/horse town Antalya.
On the way it spots the first Otto knight

IT: Dutch archer dies at Entremont, Hittie archer at Lapurdum and Otto ancient cav at Camul (thanks to cat, this was close)
Persian horse retreats at Catarac. (7-0)
Hitties move all their units towards Lapurdum, Otto go for Camul (our iron hill), Persians for Catarac, all 3 cities threatened.

(2) The army pillages Otto iron and horses, the other and razes a persian town (only 2 spears)
The good thing for now: Ottos now lack iron but have another source of horses.
We bombard the Otto units on the iron and kill the spear and the MDI but now all gallics at Camul are wounded, have
to use spear as cannon fodder for interturn, not enough attackers to kill all those Otto units.
Bombard and kill of Persian horse at Catarac.
Kill Hittie 3man at Lapurdum, 4 archers left there. (13-0)

IT: 2 Hittie archer die at Lapurdum across the river, promoting the spear to elite. (15-0)
A lot of Otto MDIs together with some spears again threaten our iron at Camul.
CoL comes in, set to Philosophy, we don't need any more ancient age techs and must keep up in research, so go for the fastest
tech here.

(3) Kill of Hittie archer at Lapurdum, one remaining there.
The cats are once again the life-saver as we redline and kill 2 spears and 4 MDI at Camul without losses,
had to attack with HP-3 gallics but win-ratio is still on the positive side. Several elite victories but no leader-luck.
Bombard and kill Dutch spear Burdigala. (21-0)
The armies continue their work. Burdigale and Antalya are pillaged back into the stone age.

IT: The last of the initial Hittie archer dies at Richb. (22-0) New Otto MDIs approach Camul, the stream doesn't slow down
yet, they must have had a huge initial offensive force. Several persians approach Eboracum, 2 Dutch archer from the north.

(4) The sloughter continues as we kill off 2 persians (horse and archer) at Eboracum and 3 Otto MDIs at Camul. (27-0)
For the first round our iron isn't in danger, can see only 1 MDI and a persian spear 2 tiles away.

IT: A persian horse commits suicide at Burdigale. (23-0) Weakly Xerxes starts the GLib.
2 dutch archer go towards our furs at Verul. This shows how weak we are, not enough troops to defend everywhere.
The first Otto knight finaly arrives 2 tiles at Camul, together with another ancient cav, 2 MDIs and a pike, problematic.
The dutch land the usual 2 archers at the hill near Gergovia.

(5) Kill the two archers near Gergovia and a exposed persian horse (26-0)

IT: Our furs-defender fends of a dutch spear. (27-0)
Now the fast enemy units attack at Burdigale. The perisans lose a horse, the Ottos an ancient cav
but their knight kills an elite gallic :( (29-1)
The Hitties land a Knight at Gergovia, they have all ressources so they will be a real problem.

(6) We kill the Hittie knight at Gergovia, good thing it was only a reg, and the Otto one at Burdigale.
Also a elite gallic finishes off a persian horse near Catarac. (32-1)
Our armies find Istanbul in the south.

IT: The Zulus finish the GLib!
A stack of 4 fresh otto MDI and an archer shows up, think they go once more for Camul.
2 new dutch archer step next to the furs, 2 persian archer near Eboracum and a horse at Cataracum.
Also 2 persian archer at the hill south of Cataracum where we want a new city.

(7) Since the Otto MDIs are 2 turns away we concentrate on the persians this turn, the 2 archer at Eboracum and
the horse threatening Cataracum are history (35-1)
Start lib in Entremont, if we ever want to win this, we need infra, we barley have any.

IT: The Japanese build Sun and Kinghts Templar on the same turn! They also start Sistine.
Lots of persians in the Eboracum - Cataracum area, mostly archers.
All Otto MDIs step on the open ground near Camul...

(8) And now its bombard time, 9 cats fire, then killing of a all 4 MDIs and the archer.
Kill two more persian archers at Eboracum but nearly lose a gallic on open ground. (42-1)
We seem to have disconnect the last horses from the Ottos now.

IT: The dutch archers bybass furs-town and go for Gergovia
The Iros have built a new town near the one we had to abandon at Nerovats turn, they seem to build little military.
One lonly archer from them steps out of the fog from their desert town.

(9) Bombard and kill a dutch spear marouding at Eboracum and the Iro archer south of Camul (44-1)
Finally, Istanbul is totally pillaged.

IT: Another dutch archer impales himself on Gergovia.
2 Otto knights show up, one retreats at Alesia, the other waits outside.

(10) Finally, after a lot of elite victories we get a leader by killing off a dutch spear.

Mump2_5.jpg

We settle Hope-Town on the hill south of this glorious event :D
Kill also a Otto archer south of the our town (46-1)

Still a lot of headaches...
Mump2_6.jpg

We are in a really difficult strategical situation. Enemies all around our lands and barely able to hold the lines
with knights coming already at us and a not existing infrastructure while our backdoor is open like the defense of the
pakistan basketball team...

The 2 armies have a few movement left, continue pillaging.
The leader should probably get us a homeland gallic army or we will be in deep touble once the Hitties come in numbers
as the Ottos did on my turn.
One more settler in Eboracum if we can find a good spot, the gallic due next turn in Lugdunum must be kept in the rear area
together with the one in Gergovia to help defending against those landings.
The dutch archer in the north are always heading towards Gergovia.

And the Ottos nearly in the ston-age, hopefully it will hurt them enough

The new town shouldn't produce a reg spear, think I have alread changed that but the next player should check, just saw it on the screenshot

amazing effort :goodjob:

however, I think the game is lost, the map doesn't help a choke point strategy, we don't have the GL to keep us up, IIRC we aren't even monarchs yet and can't afford a revolt which we have to do...

Revolting to monarchy is a problem because troop support would likely kill us with all our small towns. We just have one big problem, from the beginning of my last turnset when we hadn't even gallics: a HUGE front.
This makes it very hard to concentrate forces and expand.
I think we can hold on against the current opponents but once the rest with advanced units come up (knights, samurais...) we are in big trouble.

If you can't afford to have a revolt for so many turnsets, then the game is lost. I fully understand why you guys didn't revolt, I mean a potential 7 turns of no new troops kills us, but despo kills us as well in the long run...I'd say this game is lost...

lurker's comment: Celts are religious. Max 2 turns in anarchy. :)

I was tempted to revolt after a few turns when I saw I could manage the incoming units somehow with lots of shuffling between cities but as I stated, troop support is an issue in the current situation. Our economy is not healthy enough for AW, even our production capacity is limited, one or two gallics per turn is no enough to fight several DG-AIs in the long run AND build the necessary infrastructure.

Ridiculous turnset :worship: . What a fantastic performance. This game may be lost, but it might not be. The units may start to slow down as we pillage. Maybe we could send an army or two to slowly but surely take the GL city?

I think the leader should build the FP. You didn't mention builds, but we probably don't have enough GS for an army, and we need more production.

It's probably lost, but ThERat is up, and he is one of the GOMOAW. Let's just make sure.

played the turnset with that mindset all is lost, but hey, we play AW, it is supposed to be a loser game anyway

survived 10 turns with close shaves, lost one pillager army because attacking a spear at Istanbul got it yellow :wallbash:

let me start C3C again to get a screenshot

save

Pre-Turn
bite the bullet and revolt (since we are religious anyway)

IT lose a GS to a knight

1.250AD
form army and defeat a spear, move towards Iro city there and take out a archer
defeat wounded knight as well
a ACav forces our workers to retreat

IT we go very lucky winning 2 battles at even odds, wounded knight goes down and promotes GS
ACav loses against the lone spear we had for defenses
we get the pentagon message

2.260AD
we're monarchs
defeat a few units here and there and pillage

IT Ottomans LB's are a very good sign of our pillaging campaign

3. 270AD
raze Caughnawaga to make way for our next town
remember, if you don't expand you lose (start a few settlers as well)
spot workers busy reconnecting the ivory, we're so not going to let this happen

IT Gergovia is getting under more and more pressure from the Dutch
map making is in, currency next in 5

4 280AD
moving our latest army forward to to some damage meet the Zulus, 19 cities, a monster in the making, declare war
finally get a MGL while beating some Dutch archer at Gergovia
we need a FP and the pentagon, decide to go for the FP first

snatch a worker at Izmit

IT we get quite a few troops for better defense as the Persian are coming

5.290AD
rush FP at Cataractorium, that part of our empire could surely need some better cities
defeat 2 units in samaria, pillage and get woudned taking out an LB
Istanbul has spear as top defender, this opportunity we must use (leter badly regretted however)

6.300AD
meet Japan and declare, big empire as well
clear out some archers at Gergovia,
fail to defeat landed archer in our hinterland, retreated GS will most likely die in the IT
decide to get creative and defeat archer with spear
disrupt the Dutch mountain trail, if we ever going to make progress there, this is the first step

IT Hittites land a LB
Otto finishes Leo in Istanbul, Japan the Sistine..some one starts Cops

7.310AD
defeat a first spear in Istanbul, but get yellow
defeat the landed Lb and some other stuff, snatch the Dutch settler pair

IT  Hittites show up with a stack containing knights, this can get very ugly
currency in, construction next in 4
Hittites start and finish cops, are SGL's on?

8.320AD
defeat 3 units, one pillager army goes to Istnabul to help out
3rd army goes back to help with Hittites but hat might be too late

IT lose one of the pillager armies, was yellow but got killed by an LB
Hittites threaten us big time

9.330AD
raze iro town while sending one army back
take out a settler pair and much other stuff

IT Lapurdum almost falls, a redlined spear is all between melt down and survival for now

10.340AD
rush army back into Lapurdum, hope it holds
found Nemausus, defeat a landed LB from Hittites with spar yet again

it seems Dutch have shifted their target as gergovia is well defended
by careful about it

mum340.jpg

I didn't count kill ratio, but we lost around 3-4 units at home but lost one army

Good news from the front in two turns we have two more armies. :) :):):) Gentlemen i need advice here should i got a fifth leader should i build a fifth army or build the pentagon.

I'd say once we are somewhat secure, build the pentagon...it will help us a lot to have stronger armies

I'd say once we are somewhat secure, build the pentagon...it will help us a lot to have stronger armies

I fear we will never be secure again.

Defenitly pentagon, will make the armies we got stronger. I think we should go after Great lib if we can reach it. We'll lose lot's of GS's against knights.

Great effort Mizar and Rat. We are hanging on by a thread, but still hanging on.

We do have a suitable choke location, about 5 tiles wide (halfway between Lapurdum and Salonica). All strong civs at the moment are on the other side of it. By the time we get to feudalism, we may be able to found towns towards it (we need 2 or 3).

Now, we have probably missed our window of opportunity to really pull that off, but I think we should try anyway.

Resulting army tasks:
Army 1: keep civs on our side of the pangaea pillaged (don't bother attacking for some time)
Army 2: help defend our west flank, move south after that to found towards choke (cover roading crews along the way). I think founding towards the south again will relieve some pressure off our center.
Army 3: Capture Mauch Chunk and Chondote (not necessarily in that order), raze Breda; cover settling three more towns northeast (blue dot 3, 1 south of Breda, some spot in the tundra north of Breda); after that, move towards choke to help out.

I know this is all extremely, absurdly optimistic. I feel this would have been perfectly doable, if only we hadn't lost some precious time because our initial push south was marred by logistical problems (lack of roads, river in our way), and because we were not sufficiently decisive on strategy in the east. But I'd like to try the above anyway, see if we can still get it.

I would not bother with the GL. It may be pretty close (we can see Zulu borders not far from Salonica), but we can't afford the armies going. The first three MA techs will still come fairly fast. Above strategy implies getting 6 more towns within the next 10 turns, after that founding towards the choke with about 4 more (probably including the incense), so high science should be sustainable.

Yeah but their our tons and tons of units also regrettfully i wouldn't be able to finish my turn to tuesday so i'll upload after four, i can't even finish this turn so who's up needs to finish it.
IBT Ottomans are lookni for payback they pillage a road.

Turn 1 Neamuss is ultimately undefenible 1 gallic defending and 5 units near it.
No walls are in the city. So i abandon it i move the gallic to a usefull position.
There was also room for more cities in our hearland. So i direct the settlers their.
Science is set to eighty for one turn. Army kills one unit. So does a gallic no cassulties.

Turn 2. New Army! Its at lindum its a defender. The Japanese our here with archers and longbows.
Work begins on fueds.

IBT NEw Army!!!!!

Turn 3 Things aren't looking good about twenty troops on our borders including Samuri
and knights.

Turn4: New army and we are getting pillaged like no other.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/101788/mump.SAV

I think we all concentrated hard to keep the kill ratio high but with knights coming at us this sort of front we are dealed with is very hard to defend.
If we really loose, I wouldn't object to a new try. :)

I'm up next. I'll play some more, but if samurais have arrived, I think we're done.

I'll post in a few hours.

Edit: I've opened the save, and I don't think I'll continue this game. I'll review the save more thoroughly, and post some comments, but I'm not quite happy.

I will take Mizar's save from here, and play that. I will create a new thread for that.

YEah there here. Yeah were prtty much screwed on my save.

lurker's comment:

Bad luck again, guys; third time lucky, maybe.

Are you sure about going with the Celts again? It seemed to me that those extra 10 shields were a killer when it came to knocking out units quickly.

Have you considered Persia - Immortals are MI's for the price of a Sword; or maybe Greece - Hoplites defend like Pikes, for the price of a Spear.

Both would give you that all-important early advantage, and arguably have better trait combinations for self research.
