Music of Civ VI

I'm just very impressed with Industrial and Atomic versions (which also applies to the Cree and Mongolia :crazyeye:). Hearing them for the first time just made me stunned and amazed. That's just how much I like them. I hope Tamar will spawn often in my games :)

Put her manually in every one of your games.....:p

though I did like the Chanting in Civ5 and Civ4's Byzantine themes.

Sidenote on that, the Byzantine themes weren't very authentic in either games (plus the Civ IV one was in Latin) which subtracted a lot from them for me. The huge step up in effort and detail in Civ VI music gives me hope that Byzantine music will be phenomenal this time around.

How were the Civ5 Byzantine themes not authentic? Just wondering....

Byzantine chanting has its own music scale and techniques which are not found in Western-style choir music (like the one singing Phos Hilaron). There were changes in pitch and notes as well to fit the grandiose feeling better. Some distinctive traits like the "ison" (the background harmonics in Byzantine polyphonic singing) were ditched altogether. And of course because it was instrumental, it can't recreate microtones which Byzantine music and middle eastern music in general is riddled with. You can tell some microtones in the Civ V theme are "faked" by shifting a note and changing from high to low pitch with different parts of the choir. Clever, but it could have been better.

They also ditched secular Byzantine instruments like lyra (kemenche) or kanonaki (qanun). The more folk-oriented Civ VI soundtrack also makes me hopeful we'll get some exciting stuff there.

Georgia First Listen up!

Geoff Knorr and co. have gone all out with their themes in the expansion. The Poundmaker Singers, Mongolian throat singing, and now Georgian choirs. What next? :)

Georgia, Cree, and Mongolia all have some of my new favorite themes.

Georgia First Listen up!
Wow, this might be my second favorite after Mongolia's. It's slow but majestic, kind of like Indonesia and Scythia in a way. I'm so glad choirs are used a lot in the theme, they've been missing in a lot of the civ themes other than Russia.

Never really paid much attention to the different themes in the game however loved the intro music. But these vocals in the music especially, Cree and now Georgia, are making me excited.

Indeed, I hope we get more vocal music. Makes me really want three things: a Medieval European civ with Gregorian chanting, the Byzantines to have Greek chanting, and an Islamic civ (Ottomans?) with wailing. :D (Though a good taksim would probably be more appropriate for the Ottomans, specifically.)

Or maybe Morocco will return with a similar theme to Civ V :mischief:

Please no. We don't need the likes of Gandhi's Civ V war theme or Ahmad al-Mansur's Civ V war theme in Civ VI.

Thankfully the vocals for VI: Rise and Fall so far have been excellent, and the use of musicians belonging to each Civ really adds some variety and world spice to the music in VI. It's not bad to have orchestral themes, but it is very nice to have actual vocals. Shame that Arirang wasn't also given vocals.

TBH what I hated about al-Mansur's themes wasn't the vocals; it was that awful vibraphone (I think?). :p

After looking up the vibraphone, I can say I didn't mind that in the Moroccan themes. :D My mom is scared of the female wailing vocals though. :p

It's an instrument I've always hated, not to mention it's cousin the marimba (which, come to think of it, is probably the actual instrument used in Morocco's themes). :p

Hmm, that got me thinking. I really want a civ whose theme is dominated by piano or harpsichord...

Which Civ is best suited for that? Austria?

That's what I was thinking. Especially if it's Austria-Hungary: Franz Liszt. And of course Mozart.
