Is there anything at all that i might do that could give me an advantage? Something that most average gamers may not know about. it would help.

thanks for whatever help you can give

Well, go through the War Academy, cause there's plenty of good stuff in there. The thing that pushed me over the top in becoming a good player was being more aggressive with my opponents, which probably isn't a problem with most people!

Civ isn't a matter of one big thing. It's a matter of many small things, and here's afew that aided me:

-Get the SSC, or Super Science City. Even with one city, you can win the science race.
-Eliminate nearby opponents quickly, to establish early territory.
-Defend all your cities with 2 good Def units and one good Off. unit.
-Use a high luxury rate in Democracy/Republic to blast your population upwards.
-Spies are great units. Use them extensively.

Oh, and basically everyone here will tell you to expand, expand, expand. MOst of them are probably better than me, so I'd advise you do so.

If you dont take these games with your buddy to seriously, cheat, cheat at every opportunity.

Save the game and then open it up as a single player game and then use the cheat menu to reveal the map. A great way to find out where he is, what he is doing and where you can expand to.

I'm a retired Civ 2 player, with a 100% win record. If you dont want to cheat, expanding quickly is the key. Ideally you want a horsie as soon as possible so you can find where you are going to build ya next city and to get the goodie huts. Depending on what difficulty you play, real early you dont need a defensive unit in your city, just build settlers. If someone is close enough to kill you in the first 15 turns of the game, who cares? It sucks when you have to fight a war in the first twenty turns anyway.

EXPAND,.....but not beyond your ability to protect yourself solidly........connect you cities with roads, and watch where you build those roads don't just make a bee line though the moutains if there is some grassland to the side.....TADE ROUTES!!!espcialy with others civ's BIG cities.....go for broze working, horse back riding, writing, code of laws, cerimonial burial, MONARCHY, then philosophy, polytheism, and MONOTHEISM for mike's chaple

The most important thing is to find your own style, I think. MrSparkle's suggestion to cheat, as morally repulsive as it might sound, is a great way to learn more about how the game works, and how to refine your strategy. Just grow out of it at some point or you'll always be dependent on cheating.

I think the super-science city's not that important, personally. I've been meaning to try it out one day, but haven't yet. Hasn't hurt my ability to stomp Zulu butt without it though.

Definitely expand early, and at every opportunity. Don't be too picky about terrain either. So your city will never be size 40--who cares? It's far better, especially at the beginning, to control as much territory as possible. I hate to leave even a single 'plains' tile open around my cities, as the AI will often build a city there, and that's more annoying than having overlapping tiles.

And Hippo's suggestion for 2 good def., 1 good off. in every city sounds a bit extreme--unless you're playing Deity level you don't need it. I usually build one phalanx and go for the Great Wall right away. That's all the defense you need--then build cheap units for happiness as you need them. Great Wall is the best for quick expansion, as not only are your units better protected, other civs will always offer you peace.

Oh one more thing--believe it or not, this didn't occur to me for quite a while after I'd started playing--but building roads in all your 'plains' tiles will give you a good trade/science boost right at the beginning.

Your own style? Definitely. I just can't be an expansionist! SSC? Try it. You will dominate the tech tree. Kicking Zulu Butt? Never a problem

Two good d's and one good o is more for mideval-industrial times. I agree-don't waste resources on defense in the beginning.

But surely you don't do that in every city? Then again, you say you're not an expansionist--it might make sense with a small empire I suppose.

I don't like to waste resources on defense later on in the game either though--unit upkeep is crazy under a democracy.

send me a copy of one of your saved games and i'll take a look at it.

Yeah, but when you have a city w/ production 60, losing 4 or so is not a big deal. At least if you're ahead of the AI.

My original comment on cheating was just a lighthearted jest. The best way to get better at Civ 2 is just to play it everyday. Practice makes perfect. Find out what your friend does FLI, then think of a way to beat it.

My key to victory on a large map in multi or single player composes of 2 steps:

1. Build the pyramids
2. Expand like crazy

Kill him.

Assuming you're not a violent psychopath, however, you might want to consider giving up silly things like social activities, schoolwork, your job, and personal hygiene, and of course sleep, and dedicate your existence to becoming one of the Civ Elite.

Then again, there's a lot to be said for just killing him.

Thanks for the advice, guys (and girls). Please feel free to continue giving giving giving. So far, i will try a bunch of strategies that all of you have included. these are build a SSC (help, what exactly does of Science city contain?), hi luxury tax during republic and democracy, create a horse and explore right away, build roads everywhere for trade, The Great Wall is defenetly a priority, and last but not least, NUKE EM.

And like i said, keep it coming. thanks for the help.

Build your cities on mountians and hills and forests and anything else that will give to a defensive edge. And build lots of City walls! I had a musketter fortified on a hill in a city, with barraks, with city walls, and a coastal fortress. Nothing could touch me. Except 1 out of 3 Bombers and the nuke. Not even the battleship or howie could break me!! It's VERY cool to be way behind in tech but hanging in there because of defensive positions!!!

I haven't tried a SSC yet, but I do often have a "Warcity". This is always my highest-producing city, and I build a Shakespeare's Theatre there for no unhappiness. Under Fanaticism, I build as many military units as possible, then switch to Democracy and BAM! 40 offensive units that cause no unhappiness. This way you can go into super-growth mode without sacrificing your ability to kick Z butts!
