My Civ 5 game is corrupt. I got a crossbowman in classical age.

My archer was exploring and clearing barbarian camps and it found a ruin. The ruin gave it upgraded weapons and it turned into a crossbowman. This is in classical age too.

Does this mean the whole game is corrupt?

I recently redownloaded the whole game from steam a couple of weeks ago just to make sure there wasn't a problem with it being corrupt.

My computer is pretty up to date and fast. (2500k and a gtx 560 ti).

Its probably just a glitch?

I uploaded it too for you to see.

What's the problem? "Upgraded weapons" is just their way of saying you get a free unit upgrade. Similarly a warrior gets upgraded to a spearman if he gets the same thing from a ruin.

It's supposed to be like that :)

One of the things you can find in a ruin is that your unit gets upgraded. Warriors become spearman, scouts become archers, archers become crossbowmen, etc.
Regardless of your own tech level.

The Archer will eventually upgrade to Rifleman the same way if you get lucky enough, and Infantry and Mech Infantry after that.

I have been this lucky in the past.

Personally I think they should've retained Grenadiers because all ranged promotions are wasted upon conversion to Rifleman, and converting to Cannon or Artillery seems ludicrous. After Grenadiers they could upgrade to Infantry but retain their ranged ability because the game doesn't account for grenades, bazookas or grenade launchers for infantry in late game.

Wrong. The ability to upgrade a unit multiple times throught ruins has been removed a few patches ago.

I stand corrected.

I have the latest patch btw, but my experience was from early releases.

It did happen early release.

OP: You got lucky on a goody hut. Not as lucky as if they had given you a free tech, but luckier than if they had given you a map of the surroundings.

Enjoy it, and preferably use your advantage to its full potential.

Crossbow is fairly powerful in the early game. Good for capturing cities with just one Crossbow and one melee unit.

I usually try to upgrade the scout to level 3 via barbs and then upgrade it to archer via a ruin. Normally my scouts are the only unit that pops a ruin. Once you do get crossbow and upgrade to that, you have a really powerful crossbow. Can see further, move on any terrain 3 spaces, and pretty good at range also. An English Crossbow like this can also range/attack one tile further. That means you can hit a target 6 tiles away in one move.

It's not uncommon. Playing as Arabia not too long ago I had a Chariot Archer upgrading to a Camel Archer. I hadn't even started researching Horseback Riding, let alone Chivalry (Camel Archer is a knight replacement).

Yeah, you kill about every enemy in one shot then, it's a bit crazy, but fun.

You can't get an upgrade from 2 upgrade techs ahead.

For example, you can upgrade an archer if you have discovered archery before. You will need machinery if you want to have a chance for your crossbowman to upgrade into a rifleman.

You will probably also need to play on arcipelago or island maps because otherwise everyone will find every ruins before it can happen.

But yeah at release i heard stories about getting mech infantry before 1500BC at marathon speed.

In my current game, I also had an exploring archer upgraded from a ruin. (Archepello)
The ruin is designed to work even when you don't have the tech; so enjoy the advanced unit.
