So I played my first game from start to then end in like 6 hours.
Every choice was random, rolled FI/Artist/LS/W and got an alantic world.

I tried to focus on culture but only ended up with one free tech.
I went Supremecy, and won a pretty comfortable victory at turn 252, the only real threat was the Slavic Federation who built the Harmony improvement 2 turns before the gate was finished.
However I used my pretty weak force in that area to capture the city controling their improvement, they then decided to do a stupid peace deal, they could have gotten the city back on that turn, that peacedeal ended the only treat and noone did ever dow me stop me:king:

After the joke that was CivV Deity, I'm not sure why I hoped this wouldn't be the case.

Was that with the standard staggered start or did you go to advanced setting to turn that off?

(The human has a major snowball effect bonus with the staggered starts.)

the human does, but only for some things.

The later an AI settles, the more bonuses it gets.

I'm not sure if the AI settling right off the mark is better or worse, mechanically/statistically, than if they settle later.

Obviously pods and exploration sites (and maybe a fast Colonist from Prosperity) is the humans gain on staggered starts.

The AI get a whole lot of units when it settles really late. Had the pink lady basically land in front of me and declare war 10 turns later or so. ALMOST got wrecked because I thought I was save before she landed. ^^

But the amount of pots you get will really push you ahead if you have a start where no AI lands near you early on. Don't think the AI-bonuses can really make up for that.

From the games I've played so far everybody seems much more spread out when all starting together. Could just be luck I guess? In the early games I played I found I had an AI land much closer to me when settling afterwards.

A scan of the threads shows it's just as random as Civ V was in this regard.

(Humans don't really complain if they are a good size distance apart if on the other side of the map 3 AIs are stacked on top of each other.)

I do note that that if you are used to a larger than standard map on Civ V, that the larger than standard map on BE will on average give you extra room simply from being locked at 8 factions.

It's not locked though, you can use more - but have to add them in the advanced options. 12 is the maximum, probably 22 like in Civ 5 if you edit the game files. If you don't use mods that add Civs, then the game will just add some of them twice.

I play large continents (high sea level) in BNW (10 civs, 20 CS) and I've been playing BE on "standard". There is no large map strangely - it goes straight to "massive" from "standard".

The standard map with 8 civs does feel quite big and open still however, though I have been getting stuck in the outer reaches in almost all my games rather than in the middle of the AI's.

it was staggered on a smal map.

Far in on my second game now and I would say Im doing way better overall.
Now as PAC I went with a prosperity start and pumped out settlers so now I got maybe 20 cities on the biggest map size/pangea.

I got academies quite early by slowteching, now they are boosted with knowledge and Im producing like 650 science before turn 200 with very little trade support, about the twice of the closest ai.
Im even doing better at culture getting virtues in like 7/8 turns now because of the harmony building.

Im building the Mindflower and will finish it in early 200s, noone else can build their project, the closest is at 12, I think this is to a win for me:king:

I kinda like the 'delayed start' because , first it s human player centric and it s part of my civ experience , and more importantly because you never know if an AI wil not suddently pop up 'there' with a horde of units . In civ , by scouting , I could defend a 3/4 city empire with 3 well positionned archer and maybe bait with a forward settled but well placed city. Here you can not be sure of what is your 'front' and what is your 'back' early game. I like that.

I did win on Apollo, but it was a duel map. I was just experimenting mostly. But either "Apollo" is easy, I'm better than I thought, or playing on a duel map made it more equivalent to my "Emperor" level skill

Haven't tried Apollo yet as I'm using my first game to experiment. Thus far, it seems the AI is a little passive, allowing me to just build/research to my heart's content. Without the threat of warfare, I didn't need to waste time on military until I wanted a war.

My game I got locked into an endless war
that she didn't even try to win until I was 2 turns away from winning.
I had no option for peace

I won my first game on Apollo yesterday - overall I'd say the difficulty was on par with emperor in CIV5. The AI was a bit more aggressive, but nothing I couldn't keep at bay with Rocket Batteries in my cities and a few units around them.

They had an advantage during the mid game, but failed to utilize it, allowing me to win a Promised Land victory around turn 270.

Hmm, well Apollo is obviously supposed to be equivalent to Diety. I'd actually never tried Diety in Civ 5. Maybe they'll patch it or something. Though making sure to have a good defensive army late game might save your skin if playing with more people and you decide NOT to placate them with their same 'ideology" equivalent

My first game was quite different. I played as Franco-Iberia with artists and free clinic start on a terran world. I played on Soyuz difficulty. The AI left me alone the whole game, until the end, when on turn 267 I started building the emancipation gate. My neighbor, Hutama, who went full-on Purity, suddenly DoW's me and crushed me military. The AI was definitely competent military. Maybe I am just a really bad player but I did not feel like the AI was bad at all. It definitely knew how to attack me and stop me from winning.

Won my second game with even less trouble then the first.
A turn 215 harmony win, at the time I was getting high cost tech in 5 turns, virtues in 7 and only KP did even get also up the harmony improvement but then it was like only 2 turns left.
I was so far ahead that Brazilia was on needeljets then I was on the most upgraded air unit.
