I missed where but Oxford Uni finished.

Just a steady as she goes turn. Note this:

Mining the Uranium, which will break the irragation link. Workers just above are waiting to chop and farm, use the chop wisely. :D

The holland game shouldn't be too bad Sina.. or do you just dislike football? The other games are in the middle of the night for me, so that's the only game I can really watch if I want to go to work on time tomorrow.

I'll be watching all games. My husband is a football addict and we planned our summer holiday around this. We'll be leaving for Germany on Wednesday (I'm German, so visiting my parents was the obvious thing to do).

I have to admit that I slept through the Holland match. I think I fell asleep right after the goal and after I woke up, there was no more time to play. Sorry.

We got a new wireless router yesterday and everything seemed to work just fine. Then we had to play bridge tonight and suddenly couldn't get a connection. Of, course nobody checked that yesterday as it was never a problem before with all the other routers we had. 30 min later we figured that somehow port 20 was blocked and we couldn't unblock it again. How is it possible that it just got blocked. That should be one of those that is always open. And additionally you got no router software installed when you run the installation program??? How are you supposed to manage things then???

Sorry for that rant. I had a really bad time tonight.
I promise to play before I try to get rid of that problem tomorrow. :)

EDIT: I should have also said that I don't hate football. I'll be wathcing a lot of the games with interest, but there is a limit to how much you can stand.
My bet for this thingy. Ger-F and BR-E in semis and GER-BR in Final. Hopefully different outcome than 4 years ago this time.
And no, I might be optimistic, but I haven't put any money on this. :D

(0) 1760AD
Looks nice as it always does.

(1) 1762AD
Bangalore: Infantry -> Factory
Hatty converts to Buddhism

(2) 1764AD
Karachi: Courthouse -> Globe Theatre
Nanjing: Aqueduct -> Forge

(3) 1766AD
Railroad -> Radio
Delhi: Factory -> Pentagon
Bombay: Bank -> Factory
Madras: Aqueduct -> Infantry
I lower science to 80% to get some cash in for buying.
I notice we don't have Coal. :(

IBT: Huayna offers Coal for Uranium. I take it and his 1 gpt as we could really use the railroads.

(4) 1768AD
Let the railroading begin! We only have a few workers, so it'll take some time.
I spend some (ok, a lot of) gold on Factories.

(5) 1770AD
Bombay: Factory -> Broadway
Bangalore: Factory -> Observatory
Calcutta : Scottland Yard -> Spy
Guangzhou: Grocer -> Factory
Nanjing: Forge -> Infantry

(6) 1772AD
Nothing.

(7) 1774AD
Nothing.

IBT: Alex asks for Liberalism. He gets it.

(8) 1776AD
I sell Liberalism to Genghis for his 110 gold and buy an Infantry with it. He is quite mad at us, so we should have more troops at his border.

(9) 1778AD
Madras: Infantry -> Infantry
Calcutta. Spy -> Spy

(10) 1780AD
Bangalore: Observatory -> Bank
Lahore: Cavalry -> Bank
Change Nanjing to Bank. The Banks in Lahore and Nanjing should be bought in a while. We need them for Wall Street.
We also need to decide where IW should go. I think Bangalore would be a good choice.

Nicely done Sina. I'll try and have a look at the save tonight and get together some suggestions for national wonders and research path.

What else do we need coal for than railroads? We can railroad up the cities and lumbermills and mines and then cancel the trade to get our uranium back.

I got it. Will play and post in a few hours.

Atlas

Do you ever wonder why anybody wonders about so many things?

T0-1780 Okay, National Wonder wise we still need to build/finish Mt. Rushmore, Red Cross, Wall Street, Globe Theater, Forbidden Palace, Heroic Epic, and West Point. Now those last two will be tough. To build the Heroic Epic we need a unit with 10xp. To build West Point we need a unit with 17 xp. Maybe we should build these last. Start a war with like 10 turns left in the game and build a tank or two up in XP real quick, hurry the Nat. Wonders and then have a vote for UN, or finish the last Spaceship part. Lets work out a strategy for getting these last two Nat. Wonders and not getting run over, wait a second I have an idea, wait and see. I hope it is okay, but i burn a Great Engineer on the Pentagon, he gave 1320 shields towards it, meaning we only need 50 more to finish it, so it was well timed. Switch some Civics around.

JC has Biology, I consider a trade or 2, but I don't think we want to hurry the tech pace, so I hold off for that reason and because we are at our current health limit in almost all our cities so the population growth would not really help us. No one else has an tech we don't, Alex has fish.

T1-Pentagon completes, with a civic switch to Vassalage and Theocracy and a barracks and buying and infantry to finish on that turn too, we now have a 10 xp unit, and thus can build the Heroic Epic, WITHOUT a war. Of course, this does not solve the problem of not being able to build West Point, for that we will need a war, but we will now have a city that produces half cost units for that war. Not a bad little trick. Now where to put it... Also this turn I hurry a bank, 2 actually. I am also trying to set up a military rail net. I think the Free Religion switch is good, now that we are in Theocracy (for 5 turns only though) you can see the difference the 10% Science makes.

T2-1784 Bangalore starts Ironworks, due in 18.

T3-Radio comes in. Start on Mass Media due in 8. Science has temporarily been turned down a bit to collect cash to rush buy stuff. Now really is the time to do since it is less costly relative to research since we are not currently in Free Religion.

T4-Spy finishes in Calcutta, Heroic Epic started. I choose this city because it is on the water and I want that discounted Military cost on ships too. I think this is our best protection againist Alex. Rush buy bank in Lahore.

T5-Rush a Factory here. Switch Civics back to Free Speech and Free Religion (gotta love Spiritual trait!!).

T6-1792AD-Zzzz

T7-Zzzz

IBT-Mao demands we cancel our deals with Eygpt.

T8-Rush Factory in Madras.

T9-Calcutta finishes Heroic Epic, starts a Grocer.

T10-1800 Mass Media finishes. Research set to Fission for the Manhattan Project.

So after Fission, the research path is pretty open. However continue to research deep into the tree, do not research breadth wise into the tech tree. There are a few reasons for this but primarily because we want to maintain a tech lead (let others research things like Fascism), we want that Great Engineer at Fussion, and we will pick up those techs when we complete the Internet at Fiber Optics. Fiber Optics would be a good research choice after Fission, but remember that is obsoletes the Kremlin, so make sure everywhere has critical stuff like Factory, research buildings, barracks before you discover it. Along that line pay special attention to Kolphur, it is our new city and lacks a lot of infrastructure, but can be brought up to speed quickly, make sure this is done first. Also I would ignore tech trading from here on out (caveat-unless someone gets a wonder enabling tech before us) because we will be building the Internet soon.

Defense wiseI think that we have plenty of ground units (many of them desperatly need upgrading, but will be fine after that). But could use some naval units.

Use that Great Engineer in Delhi to Rush something, probably Hollywood, in one of the border cities, or the UN/Wall Street in Delhi perphaps. As for the other Great People, I would probably use the Great Merchants to do trade missions, then use the gold to rush critical infrastructure (see list above for what qualifies as critical) and to upgrade our military.

When Bangalore finishes the Ironworks I think the Forbidden palace should be done there. Things are going well. After the Ancient and Classical wonders we had a good lull in the wonder building, but that is now over, there is a lot to build in the modern age and Delhi can not do it all. We neglected the National wonders for too long.

Worker wise-continue building railroads on lumbermills and mines. Also make sure that the rail net is completly continous from everycity to every city, the cancel the Uranium deal with HC. We want to deny him that resource. In fact as our first thing to do as Sec. Gen of the UN should be to ban nuclear weapons.

There are 245 turns left. Plenty of time, but lets plan carefully and get these wonders built, then win!!!

Good point on West Point there Atlas. Looks like we'll have to go to war at some stage then. Sina's hopes of a peaceful win is not looking good.

We can prepare a few 10XP units and send them in getting them to 17XP as quickly as possible. I think we should just prepare to go for Mao. His empire will fit nicely to ours. He has a holy city up north and not much else and isn't very popular from the big war everyone had with him. I think we should just go for his Shrine city and whatever other cities are needed to get 17XP and then we can stop. We should have quite a technological advantage over him. A few well promoted infantry should do the job. I'll probably start preparing us for a quick war.

We can't ban nuclear weapons until we've finished the Manhattan Project! So don't rush that too quickly.

Yes, looks like war is inevitable. Ah well, take a bunch of Mao's cities then, I say. It'll cancel our DPs though.

I don't like the idea of waiting to get world wonder techs with the Internet, so I'd prefer to reseach Plastics rather soon if it's not on the path to Fiber Optics (can't remember). I'd probably use the GE for the Three Gorges as well. Alternatively, it might be a good idea to save him for the Space Elevator if we have to build it in a rather unproductive city. I can never say which cities are eligible and which ones are not.

Bangalore has already Versailles, so we might better pick a different city for the FP. Not that it really matters, the FP is useless for an empire like ours.

I'll be leaving for summer holidays tonight and will be without civ for about a month. Ugh! At least I have internet and can continue commenting and lurking.
I signed up for this SG expecting it to be finished before my holidays started and am quite sad that I can't play it to the end. But I'm sure you'll finish it nicely and I'll be watching you! :)
Already looking forward to getting back home and participating in SGs again.

Lurker comment:
Don't forget to use a couple of spies to keep an eye on wonder building by opponents. You can use this to determine exactly how many turns they have left, and when you want to time your rush-buying or rush-popping. Great game so far!

With Sina out of action for a month, I'd like to ask if there are any lurkers who are willing to step in to fill out the roster a bit? If so, speak up.

Played my turns. Didn't build much of an army as I hadn't realised that we had more pressing issue to deal with at the moment. That is, a lot of wonders to be built. I also made note to get at least one picture of the peaceful Indian civilization for the lurkers.

(0)-1800AD - Here's a picture of our production at the start of my turns. As you can see, we're building a few world wonders and ironworks. Our cities are big and almost all are working all their available squares with enough happy and only a few health problems. Not to bad but it would be nice to expand a little.

Civ4ScreenShot0172.jpg

I did look to start producing military at the start but also noticed that we have Rock'n'Roll, Hollywood and the UN to build with The Manhattan Project coming along soon. I also notice that the 10XP unit has been promoted to CGIII so won't be too useful as an offensive unit. We'll maybe have to change civics again at some stage.

I sent one of the merchants from the capital to Memphis for the money.

IBT: Genghis declares on HC.

(1)-1802AD - I rushed the factory in Karachi and Nanjing to start building wonders.

(2)-1804AD - Karachi: Factory -> Rock'n'Roll; Nanjing: Factory -> Hollywood.

(3)-1806AD - Madras: Ironclad -> Infantry; Lahore: Aqueduct -> Factory; Kolhapur: Courthouse -> Library

(4)-1808AD - Broadway is completed.

Civ4ScreenShot0173.jpg

Bombay: Broadway -> the UN; Guangzhou: Ironclad -> Infantry
The merchant nets us 4050g from his trade mission. We get another great prophet and at this stage of the game he's not much use to us so I merge him into Delhi as this place will have wall street.

(5)-1810AD - I was using the spies around the place and there are some really big stacks around. Here's the power graph. Hatty and GK are really doing well (in power). I think we need a much bigger military and should build it after we get past this rush of wonders.

Civ4ScreenShot0174.jpg

(6)-1811AD - Not much happening in this turn so I took a pic for the lurkers. Note it's gone to 1 year per turn from now to the end of the game.

Civ4ScreenShot0175.jpg

(7)-1812AD - Calcutta: Grocer -> Factory

(8)-1813AD - Fission comes in and I go to combustion as it's going to lead us to Fibre Optics. I agree with Atlas that we should go straight for it and then get the Internet up to fill in whatever we are missing. I don't see any world wonders that we are likely to miss doing this. Just make sure we go the plastics route to the Internet and not the rocketry route. Then we can get (and rush with an engineer) the three gorges to power our factories. It will go in the capital.

IBT: HC asks us to go to war with GK. No thanks.

(9)-1814AD - Delhi finishes the Eiffel Tower and starts on Wall Street; Madras: Infantry -> Infantry.

Civ4ScreenShot0176.jpg

(10)-1815AD - Bangalore: Ironworks -> The Manhattan Project.

We are now building all the World Wonders available to us and most of our National Wonders are done or doing. I propose the FP to go on our Western border in preparation of our expansion East (Mao's lands). I propose that we switch to a bit of a military production mode now. We can switch civics for 5 turns to get a few 10XP infantry that should lead our invasion force into Mao's lands. Save the money we've got to promote units in areas where we may feel threatened by a counterattack.

Here's what we're doing at the end of my turnset.

Civ4ScreenShot0177.jpg

And here's the save before I forget:

Hi all,

Quick question on looking at the map (thanks Kikinit, btw!:) ) -- it seems to me there's a fair number of forests not in any city radius (11, I think I counted). Most are probably from recent culture expansions into ex-foreign territory, but there are some internal ones too (three, all just outside Calcutta's fat cross). One even has a lumbermill improvement. Maybe I'm misreading the map on some of them, but it seems you have some quick latent hammers waiting . . .

Inherited - Quick check about and its looking good. We could really use an extra healthy, but ecology after fibre optics will do. Aiming to keep adding some military, also keep the war chest intact.
IBT Alex offers Biology + chump change for Assembly Line. I don't think so.
1816 Infantry@ Guangzhou
IBT Hatty wants Physics. Not yet dear. HC makes kissy face with Genghis. :love:
1817 zzz
1818 zzz
IBT Now HC wants Physics, offers Biology. No, no, no.
1819 zzz This was amusing however:

IBT Alex wants us to ditch JC. :nono:
1820 Infantry @ Madras, Harbor @ Kolhapur and... Hindu Missionary @ Guangzhou :crazyeye:
1821 zzz
1822 Spys tell us HC is researching Physics now - 8 turns out. Alex is too.
1823 Hindu Missionary @ Guangzhou
1824 Drydock @ Calcutta
IBT Alex wants Hit Musicals for Fish. Useful for us, but probably more useful to Alex. No.
1825 Wall Street finishes, start Hindu Missionary @ Delhi, we are now +26 at 90% research. Drydock @ Madras, Infantry @ Guangzhou.

Time for the next persons TLC.

Why the missionaries? Well I figure as we are very close to tanks, so loading up too much on Infantry is pointless. Especially considering we have lots of troops to upgrade... to infantry. The three missionaries are a likely +12 gold/turn now Delhi has Wall Street. Feel free to tell me to stop the :smoke:.

Might be worth trading Physics now for whatever we can get as it will be out there shortly anyhow.

No rush building my set, wanted the $ to be on hand for war time.

The save (zipped for filesize upload limit):

I am out of town right now, but will to get to this Monday.

-Atlas

1825-TO-I like the look of things.

T1-Rock N Roll finishs->Grocer in Karachi. Move Workers. Can't really get anything for Physics so I hold off on it.

T@-Hatty cancels our silks for Ivory deal, instead she gives us silks and we give here hit musical. Hatty is 4 turns from discovering combusiton, so I trade her combustion and physics for Fascism. Industrialism comes in and we have 2 sources of aluminum, both right on our borders with China. Plastics due in 10. I delay a drydock in Madras and start it on Mt. Rushmore (due in 10). It is a good place for this Nat. Wonder since it currently does not have any Nat. Wonders and this one just is not that important in this game. We still can't build tanks until Plastics finishs (we only have off shore oil), so I start a Marine in Delhi.

T3-Kolhapur harbor->aqueduct. Karachi hurries a grocer for 267 gold.

T4- Calcuta finishs drydock and gets a temple, it will continue to get cultutal building since it is having like 3 ocean tiles getting lost to Greek culture, it is causing the city to starve. Also in the south Karachi and Nanjing in the South need cultural building to hold onto our Aluminum.

T5- UN finishs in Bombay starts Islamic missionary for cities that lack that religion and can't lose any tiles. Lahore finishs factory->drydocks. Mao is researching Assembly Line (due in 9), this means our tanks will be fighting infantry :sad:

T6- The choice for UN Sec. Gen. is between us and Alex. I vote for us. Kobo-Daishi is also born this year, I save him, we may want to use a golden age to build some tanks. JC has artillery. HC is researching it.

T7-Uhhh, big trouble. Alex is the Sec. Gen. he got 459 votes of 845, with Mao, HC, Genghis all voting for him. We got JC and Hatty. If Alex wins a Diplo victory that would be Amazing!! Unfortunately it would also mean our loss. This probably means that we need to hurry and take Mao's land/pop. to prevent Alex from doing anything stupid, like winning. Manhattan is due in 4 so we should be alright as far as Alex passing something stupid.

T8-We only have 2 spies, that is no good, we need one on the Incan-Mongol Border, one in Greece, one in China, and One looking at our "friends" Hatty and JC. I fix this.

IBT-JC wants to trade electricity and 4270 gold for Artillery. Sorry partner, can't afford it. I do trade electricity for Biology and some change though.

T9-Alex is starting Rocketry (due in 8).

T10- Alex proposes Open Markets. I vote yes. I spend 1500 gold upgrading 2 frigates and an ironclad. These are the 3 units that are sitting on our oil resource.

Calcutta will finish a spy next turn. It should then start on a Jewish Synagoga to hopefully get back those tiles lost to Athens. Then build a Hindu temple somewhere, that will give us 6, then Calcutta should build a Hindu Madir. We want to get those 50% muitiplier in there, but well it is a lot of work for just 1 pop. point and 3 ocean tiles, so you can decide if it is worth it. Plastics is due next turn, rush the 3 Gorges in Delhi with an engineer. Next turn Hollywood and Manhattan project will finish. In 2 turns Mt. Rushmore will finish, hold that, Madras swithches production from Mt. Rushmore to a work boat so that we can hook up that oil once Plastics comes in, make sure it goes back to Mt. Rushmore.

Looking good Atlas. Next goal is to get an army ready to invade Mao. I'll try and get to this tomorrow night if I can.
