Wow!

It has happened twice in the game I'm currently playing, I had a tank unit do well, and bang, I'm prompted to give it a cool name (Alright, "Sword of Persia" may not be all that cool, but it was 2 a.m. and I was surprised).

Is this from 1.29 beta update?

Cheers,
Micsan

Welcome to CFC and the Mac elite force.

The really important thing that happened when you saw that is that you won a Great Leader, who should be lurking on the same tile as the newly renamed Sword of Persia. You can move the Great Leader to a city to rush a Wonder (or anything else), or to build an army.

And no, I don't think it is new with the 1.29 patch.

Hi Alan,

Yup, I got the Great Leader (who is pretty kick-but with 3 elite tank units in his army). I've just never had the rename option occur for an elite unit.

Of course, I've only played 8 games of Civ 3 since I got it recently. I need some sleep...

If you use the Leader to rush a wonder, does it disappear, can you later build an army with it?

Cheers,
Micsan

I just downloaded the 1.29 update recently, and I noticed this for the first time. I think it is the patch that caused it. I had the "Game of the Year" version before.

There's also an asterisk that appears next to the "elite" designation after you rename the unit. I suspect it's to tell you that this unit has generated a Great Leader, and won't generate another.

Yes. You can only use a Great Leader once. He either forms and leads an army until it is killed in action, or he dies in the gargantuan effort of creating a Wonder or improvement in one mighty bound.

I just love the new [civ3mac] guys! :jump:

Welcome micsan! :) Keep the questions coming. I still have questions myself these days.

It is... named Elite units were not availble with v1.21

Oh, I'm sure I'll have a lot more questions... :)

BTW, thanks for all the welcomes I've received from everyone!

Ahh, I have the this 1.29b2 patch and have several Elite swordsmen in my Byzantine army ;-). I have not been prompted to name them. Are you only prompted when a leader arises out of an elite unit? Also, what factors affect leader creation?

You only get to rename a victorious Elite unit after it has produced a Great Leader - and I stand corrected, I played 1.21 for so little time I'd forgotten/never really knew that it didn't allow this option.

The factors that affect Great Leader generation are:

1. Chance - something like 1 in 16 elite victories, if I remember correctly

2. If you have built the Heroic Epic Small Wonder then the 1 in 16 increases to a higher probablility.

3. I can't recall if being a Militaristic civ increases the odds further. I suspect not, though I think it increases your chances of unit promotion, so you get more elites and therefore more chances to create Leaders.

Check out the details in a fine thread in the Strategy Articles forum by Sir Pleb. It explains the probabilities and describes strategies for maximising your chances of creating Leaders.
