Naming Places On The Map

Add me to the "yes" stack, great idea.

What? How much programming experience do you have?

The amount of memory required for this is extremely small. This is something that takes about 10 minutes to implement by a programmer and cannot be done with a mod. So no, no modders will be found, and yes, I hope it finds its way into Civ4.

I remember talking about this as a great idea for civ 2 on another board. The big reward of being able to name places was for multiplayer "diplomacy" type games. Then when negotiating with nations (other players) over disputed lands and/or coordinating attacks during war, etc it would make things much easier to discuss the "ABC Mountain Range" or the "Orange Sea" as compared to trying to describe which Sea, peninsula, etc you were intending during discussions.

That was after all done in AC. And yes I think that could be a part of Civ4 (with a turn off option of course)

This would certainly be great for scenarios and Multiplayer games. (IE telling an ally of a massive movement in "Boodleburg Plains".)

I haven't, but I seem to remember you could name features by putting up signs in SimCity 2000.

And there's a game called "Conquest of the New World" where you get to name features that you're the first to encounter. I'd love to see it put into Civ IV.

Perhaps you could have the option of toggeling it as an overlay? That way those who disliked it could turn it off, those who liked it could leave it on?

Great idea. I see problems in having it visible to multiple players though (graffiti, for example), and some advantages in it being more of a player interface thing than a map thing.

Could serve for go-to points, or auto-patrol points.

I'd definately use it for marking future city sites.

I like to see this too, mainly for one reason that hasn't been mentioned yet. Spying. It would be pretty useful if you could get a spy to report to you about so and so moving troops through such and such place. Or so and so winning a war/battle in such and such place. Problem is that the AI builds crap loads of units, so you can't expect the reports to be to reliable. But it would still be useful. Just thought about how it would be nice to hear about how some Civ has Subs operating in "<insert name here> Sea/Ocean"

I hate sitting there and not being told just how much damage some Civ is doing to another Civ.

But if this is implemented I think it should come with pre-generated names also, ones based off of the Earth (Rocky Mountians, Nile River and so forth) And if you want to change the name just double click on the name

I would have to disagree with this. I think they should have a Random Name Generator (RNG) to make up names for major mountain ranges, etc.

Also, how many similar tiles would there have to be. For example, would 5 mountains be enough to make up a mountain range, and be called "The xxxx Mountians"? 7? 10? I think between 7-10 should be enough.

It was great fun naming landmarks and region in SMAC. In multiplayer games, Id rename captured areas from other players to fit in with my own faction, and rub salt in the wound! One particular sea changed names several times depending on who was controlling the area at the time.

Really, yet another feature from SMAC that I was amazed they didnt use in Civ3 when it first came out.

This is a great idea! A certain amount of fresh water tiles could be a lake etc.

I like the go-to point idea, but i do not think the graffiti thing would be a problem if you couldnt just name any ol' mountain. It would have to be a collection of similair tiles to available for naming.

i wouldnt mind this thing in Civ4 so long as it doesnt take anything out of the game thats real important as units gameplay etc

I don't really see how it would.

I think that this is one of those ideas with no drawbacks involved. I mean...barely any memory requirements, and you can even turn them off.

Oh, and this is an example of this. I'm using this map for my current game. I'm posting this in request of the topic starter.
