Naming Places On The Map

Whoa, cool map, MSTK! What would be nice: the ability to toggle on and off such a feature!

I really liek what MSTK did, it adds a lot of depth to the story an di bet that a lot of people name places in their head while they play

I rename the ships too!! It is time consuming, but oh well, each thier own!

I too rename ships. I'll some times hold onto my old ships and save a few during modern times so that i have them in a safe harbor such as Tall ships as we call them today. I'll even try to sail them around the world under escort of battleships ofcourse.

I'd like to be able to name regions on the map as well. A great idea.

They do have this nameing of the regions thing in a GOTM already mentioned. But I bet if you talk with the people who create the game of the month games they may be able to tell you how to do it. But for civ4 it should be implimented in the game so you can name any square you own or discover a different name. I'll sometimes name my cities after the terrain type. I rarely use real city names.

In the SMAC there were names, and a particular geographic area that conveyed ecological benfits.

like ctl-shift-m toglles cities and improvements ctl-sift-g for example could toggles translucent area names...
on the mountain range thing, maybe
>7 = a mountain range,
<7 = a mountain
any fresh water is a lake, and river is a river, any sea/coast is a sea and ocean tiles an ocean etc.

i defo agree with implementing it, oh god, lotr maps would be amazing!!

As I was playing Thamis's mod "The Ancient Mediterranean" (TAM) I also marvelled at the named geographical features and wondered how they were done. I also marvelled at the lovely resources that looked like asteroids, so when I was doing a solar system mod, I was trying to loot TAM's Resources file and lo and behold, what did I find, but resource squares with the names of regions on them. That's one way to do it.

I name oceans, lakes, islands, continents and other various land masses in my head all the time. I'd love to see this added.

i do the same thing! If there is a fresh water lake near by i will name it like "Battle Lake" etc.

I guess Firaxis should make something like this for the editor but on the whole there are more important things.

I would also like the ability to divide my territory into provinces, with those provincial borders clearly seen on the map. Each city in a province is closely tied to each other, with the provincial capital having the greatest influence (civil wars would be much easier to implement with a system that allowed provinces/states to be created).

Oh, and the naming of regions is an excellent idea as well, as I'm sure most have done this in their head before.

Both should be able to be toggled on and off.

Would add another fun element to a game which doesn't always seem "alive" enough to me.

I really want this in. It would be cool if you could name a continent after yourself or your nation or something.

There seems to be resounding agreement with this idea. And I say Amen to that! Everyone does this to some degree or other. I certainly name areas on the map in my head and do so in game by the names of cities. I break areas down into linguistic groups to represent different dialects, making up new names based on the original area/city name or ending them all with the same suffix. I've sometimes set up a story of a cult based around a certain mountain and all the cities on the path towards it get named accordingly.

One game a small island which I first occupied then got beaten out of became a romantic 'princess on the island needing saving' story. I took the island city back and named the city after the princess 'Lila', thereby avenging a long standing feud against the Babylonians. More sordidly another neighbouring island had been occupied many times by different civs. I took that and it became by international hareem island . I was the Persians, come on!

Other than giving the game more depth and narrative this area naming serves to remind you where the place is when you have a sprawling empire with a multitude of regions in your control.

When I start to run into the "new" repeat names, I start naming my cities after regions in my home state. Southern cities become Los Angeles, Hollywood, Burbank, Long Beach, etc. Westen areas become San Francisco, San Jose, etc. It helps me locate them at a glance when MapStat says they're going into disorder.

Interesting idea, but I see no practicle use. I just name cities what I might want to call a certian area if I ever feel like that, but mostly I name cities after me and pretend that all the little folks in my city are worshiping me in their temples. :P

Some of us have active imaginations...

I, too, name things that way, only after cities in Germany. Western cities: Dusseldorf, Essen, Munster; East: Magdeburg, Frankfurt an der Oder, Rostock; North: Kiel, Schleswig; South: Ulm, Baden; Regensburg...

How would you define the boundaries of a province? Making them too big might increase corruption, and making them too small would decrease production, just the way cities are in the current CivIII...
