Somebody.....please help.

I can't run scandisk or defrag.....

Scandisk gives me an error that it has restarted 10 times, but something is writing to the disk.

Defrag just doesn't go anywhere....just stays at 0%.

Whatever the prob, when i log on i get a 'can't open page whatever' and that my connection to the server has been reset. And my online speed is now like i'm moving in water....very, very, very slow.

Any suggestions? Please make the time i spent waiting for the pages to open so i could submit this question worth it.

Thanks.....

You need to close/stop all other programs before you start the scandisk, same apply for Defragementer.

I'm using Windows 98. It's been like this since thursday nite. My hard drive is about a year and a half old and about 60% full.

I closed everything out before running scandisk and trying to defrag.

And I could figure out/remember how to get into safe mode, anything to put an end to this.

All apps work fine, whether I'm online, or not. My only problem is my internet speed has slowed to a crawl (i can't exagerate how slow it's become), and pages only open up fully about 2/3 of the time.

Also, just to note, my mail seems to be working fine.

Well...to run scandisk and defrag in safe mode do this:
Click "Start" --> "Run" --> type "msconfig" --> click "Ok" --> click "Advanced" --> check "Enable Start-up Menu" --> click "Ok" --> click "Ok" --> click "Yes" --> Then as the computer reboots you will see a menu. Choose Option 3 which is Safe Mode. Then once in safe mode run a full scandisk with "Automatically Fix Errors" checked. Then run a defrag. Once your finished just reboot back into normal mode.

Other things you can try:
At the start-up menu choose number 5 "Command Prompt Only". Then type "scanreg /restore". Once that starts you want to select a date that was BEFORE your problem started. Then press "Enter". If it worked it will reboot when you hit "OK". Otherwise you will end up at the "C:\>" then type "scanreg /fix" and it will rebuild your registry. Then reboot and give it a try.

Who is your ISP??? AOhelL?? ;)

I believe hitting F8 during boot will give you the screen that will allow you to choose safemode.
My suggestion. Reload the computer with the same OS. This will require alot of work but your system will be like new again. A sad fact about all Microsoft Windows OSes.

if you have a comp with atleast 64 ram and minimum 233mhz do as palehorse ays but load windows ME on instead, its faster and more effiecent then 98. almost as reliable as win 2k. also have you run a virus scan yet? if so is your scanner upto date? check out www.antivirus.com to get a free online scan of your hardrives.

Your joking right???

Because no one would make that claim if they were serious. WinME is the evil, mutated half twin of Win98. AVOID IT LIKE THE PLAGUE. Unless you enjoy reformatting often and re-buying all your software in WinME flavors. I for one don't. Oh...and printers and scanners more than a few years old....forget it.

WinME is OK if your a new computer user. Because your hardware and software are more than likely WinME compatible. But most stuff before Aug. 2000 isn't. AOL 5 doesn't work on WinME, Norton 2000, and the Win98 version of 2001, etc....

Conclusion: Avoid WinME unless you have time and lots of computer knowledge.

I may have a little computer knowledge sure but i also have a shared HD i use for work i can take it out of my machine and put it into any other machine that has 32 ram and 200mhz and instantly it renconizes all hardware, no need to go get drivers for hardware. my main machine is a 233mhz MMX, i can with ME, norton system works 2001, novell client, Macaffee, and a few others like icq/winamp i can run faster then any other win 98 machine out there, that has the same processor or evenw ith a little more.

in another thread you said use the System Restore in 98 there was no such you messed your comp you reformat. look this thread says hes having problems, running 98 i don't blame him, we can both agree atleast it better then 95. ME is made for the home users, 98 is made for anyone on a network or off, business or home user no difference.

Voodooace my advice backup your stuff onto a CD or another HD then reformat, make your system clean and fresh again, if your going to use 98 make sure it the Second Edition.

and cornmaster since i won't ever post again, suggest what you can do, i wont ever be back.

Why won't you ever be back???
I hope I didn't drive you away??

And The system restore feature that caused a reformat was Win2k. And it turned out to be backup/restore that caused the problem. System restore isn't in Win2k or Win98. :(

But I said my stuff from experience. I work as a Dell Phone Technician. So when people call with WinME problems, they are always more sever, harder to fix, and crop up more often than Win98 problems. Plus we have had SOOOOOOOO many incompatibilities with ME it's not even funny anymore. Really, not funny. That's why I recommend Win98 over ME. Of course I recommend XP over ANY OS!!! It's just rocks the lamas a$$!!!!

Anyway.....I hope I didn't offend you, that wasn't my intent. I'm sorry. :(

Come back...please don't go.

WinME over Win98 ? ? ? ?
You're kidding, right ?

Stay with 98 untill you have a machine that can run XP.

O, and to go into safe mode : just restart your computer with the on/off button and select it when he's booting. No need to do all the regedit stuff. Then scandisk and defrag.
