Natural wonders

Is there any sort of location that will spawn a natural wonder in the vicinity more than others. Obviously Krakatoa and the Rock of Gibraltar will usually show up in the ocean, and It SEEMS like the Barringer Crater spawns in desert often, but are all wonders coded like this?
 
I believe so, yes. I think Mt. Sinai and Uluru are also always in the desert also, and Grand Mesa and Old Faithful always seem to be adjacent to mountains. The Great Barrier Reef is always 2-3 tiles from the coast. Gibraltar is kind of a strange one. It has to be on the coast and adjacent to a mountain, but it must also have water of five of its six sides.

I think the FoY and El Dorado are both located in the jungle.
 
All wonders have their own requirements, yes, that's scripted - written in plain English in one of the files in your directory.
Most of them require land on all adjacent sides. Fuji cannot spawn on the biggest landmass, so if you run into Fuji early game you know you're on a smaller island (that's something players are often not aware of, so worth mentioning).

Turn 7 - spain has 3 cities, one if which provides +10 culture/turn.

Mt. Uluru and Mt. Sinai count as desert rather than mountains, ironically; having Desert Folklore even adds to their tile yield, IIRC, as does Petra.

I believe all mountains in the desert get this bonus, not just wonders found in the desert, and I also believe this applies for riverside and tundra bonuses as well.

They ARE mountains too, though, and settling a city right next to them DOES, in fact, allow an observatory in that city.
 
Gotta love the stuff like barrier reef that spawns in impossible-to-use locations 90% of the time.

That one isn't that bad (about 1/3rd of the time unusable to everyone; when it is always due to either within a city states cultural border or else a badly placed city state is prohibiting founding a city in a location that can use it); its Mt Fuji that's most likely to be unusable everyone, occasionally the only land tile within 3 tiles of it is another mountain.

I've never had any issues with Fuji, it always spawned in a nice reachable location, it's Krakatoa that is the worst, that thing NEVER spawns close enough.

Your right, I was thinking of Krakatoa but typed Fuji.
 
Krakatoa is, indeed, the worst. In over 1,300 some hours of playing, I've had it in my workable tiles maybe twice. To compare, I've had the FoY in my borders more than that (4 times, 3 of which in vanilla). And the Great Barrier Reef I've had in workable tiles a good number of times (counting all the times where I or anyone could only have ever reached 1 tile out of the 2).

I should note, however, that I prefer primarily Pangaea and Continents... I play only less than 25% of my games on Archipelago or Tiny Islands.

Spain finding El Dorado = 500 gold for finding El Dorado first (which anyone gets), plus 500 gold for Spanish UA when Spain is the first to find a natural wonder. And the Spanish UA doubles all natural wonder tile yields, so El Dorado's +5 culture/turn becomes +10/turn in the city that works it for them.
 
Thye Krakatoa thing is not suprising - it was a volcanic explosion on a small island out in the sea, so the chances of it being near enough to a city are tiny.
 
Your right, I was thinking of Krakatoa but typed Fuji.
There's a nice mod that fixes the Krakatoa issue, though, but obviously that forces one to play with mods which means no achievements (booo, Firaxis!).

Meh. Early culture/turn is really not that useful because you will overshoot and get a 7th policy before renaissance.
 
Depending on victory condition it is great to have extra culture as renaissance won't be a priority.
 
I played a game on Emperor as Spain a while ago where I was first to find both Eldorado AND GBR. 2000 gold in the bank and 3 mega-tiles to work. I ended up quitting cos it was too easy :D

Not everyone is a min-maxer playing the same way as everyone else, that is something to keep in mind.

That and I really like Commerce...
