NC LXIV: Louix XIV of France

popalopa - unfortunately I can't open up your game because of the mod you are using.

I'm only half way there and its already 1736AD, how long is this gonna take? Am I neglecting something?

Is it because I'm on marathon?
I'd never try for Cultural on Marathon -- things just take far too long. I'm doing this one on Normal, whereas I usually go with Epic. Epic and Marathon are good for combat victories because they effectively improve movement with respect to build rate and tech rate; they take far too long for space and culture.

@Hrun

Spoiler :

Grats about the win sorry I didn't post a reply to your earlier update. Nevertheless I took a at that save.

You maybe should have been heading towards the electricity -> mass media culture wonders and probably should have been going there a while ago when you had an even bigger tech lead.

Could you have founded sushi? It was a big help in my game.

As regards to war perhaps you could have buttered them up a bit and got defensive pacts? DPs with Boudica and Justinian kept the others away in my game. Boudica I think will sign one at pleased and seeing as she's huge that makes it fairly easy.

You were probably right not to adopt pacifism. If you had adopted a religion you're diplo woes would have been compounded further.

Strange about Istanbul. Have you checked world builder?

Yeah I took a look and Istanbul only had 1 cathedral. Its pop was 20 I think, which was higher. But I can't understand how it got that much culture when I was running the culture slider up high and lots of wonders and 4-5 cathedrals in each city... Weird

I kept teching military so I could defend as Boudica and Toko both declared on me. Toko declared like 3 times! LOL

Yeah, I love marathon  Just seeing where I could improve and how Istanbul got soo much culture.

Spoiler :
So far ok. Got Hindu, which was a surprise as I had to research meditation first. Justianian contacted me early, I managed to spread Hindu to him. Also met Frederick south of the offshore island, but I can't get to him.

One of my axemen managed to lose a 99.3% chance to win against a barb warrior.

Got 2 great priests--Hindu shrine, great priest in Paris; and a great scientist who started an academy in Orleans. Future plans are for Orleans to be my science city and Lyons to be my manufacturing city.

Civics: Representation (from Pyramids) and Slavery. I keep trying to steal Monotheism for OR from Justinian, but he keeps nailing my spies.

Noble. Epic. Space Victory 1879.
Long and very tedious game. Because the AIs were isolated their tech rate was abyssmal and tech trading non-existent. Managed to cram 14 cities onto the continent and ran a trade route economy. Got 3 cities in Justinian's island and later on got three cities down south in an isolated penisula but still very very slow.

First attempt: BC 4000-1320
restart BC 4000 - AD 1290

Cultural victory, 1868 AD
Spoiler :
I basically finished out jesusin's general plan for cultural victories. I used a spreadsheet to figure out which city needed the Hermitage (Orleans) and how many great artists each city needed so that all 3 completed around the same time. After taking Nationalism from Liberalism I built the Taj and burned a Great Engineer for 2 golden ages. When I found Shaka he had no religion, so I sent him a Confucian missionary; Boudica was Buddhist and Tokugawa Hindu, but everyone else was Confucian. Toku eventually attacked me but his amphibious attack with cuirasseurs on galleons failed against a measly 2 musketeers (in a castle) and my nearby ironclads killed 2 of his ships. After that I traded for physics and built airships and ironclads until Toku was willing to talk and take a peace treaty. Then it was hitting end-turn another 15 times or so for the win. All 3 cities became Legendary across 3 turns (one each turn).

Noble epic re-run. Cultural Victory 1750ad.

Spoiler :
Having read through the posts I thought I'd have a go at cultural. Basic worker techs then monotheism beeline (got Judaism), Oracle for Col (Confu), bulbed philosophy (Taoism). Then music beeline, then lib beeline, went to miltrad for cuirassiers then rifling. Culture 100% after rifling. Built a bunch of GA wonders in my wonder/GA farm city. One minor war: justinian launched swords and axes against muketeers and cuirassiers, not smart though got me a lvl3 unit for HE.

Monarch/Normal 1570AD Space Victory attempt in process

Spoiler :

Settled around 15 cities across 3 continents before invading Fred in 1200's with Cannons. Took 4 of his main cities and left another city for Turks to take. And when Ottoman slowly move his stack over to Fred's lone city, I moved my stack back to Justinian with Cannon and Cuirassier combo. I got a nice quest that ended up giving me free navigation I promo for all naval units (except workboat) which makes my galleys moves 4/turn and saved me quite some money so that I don't have to upgrade them for a long time.

Knocking down Ottoman is another story, they have so many cities, i had to switch over to Policy state to avoid the rising WWs issue. Thanks to Justinian, he built the Mids for me. But Ottoman only had longbows and pikemen against my Cannon and Cuirassier/Cavalry army, so it was just time consuming. Now that I've all 3 continents under French color and sailing over for Toku before I completely settled for space run.

42 cities by now should have around 60 after Toku is gone and should be below the Domination limit if I count right. I hope I could get a Space win before 1800.

1812AD Space Victory
Spoiler :

Slowest win for a while. Ended up with 56 cities and the beaker went up to 6k in the end. But it comes a little too slow. I think it's time to try some Emperor games now.

1910 Space Victory, Monarch / Normal

Spoiler :

It was a specialist economy lesson for me, with Paris as a science city (not a single cottage built :) ). I went for wonders early on, the only relevant one I missed was the Collosus. After getting my cities up and running (had 7, I sould have settled more probably), i was extremely far ahead of everyone else. I got 2 dow's from Toku towards the end of the game but a fast upgrade of my longbows to infantry fended him off. On a side note, Shaka was hating on everyone as usual and he was getting to rifles when I was launching my ship :)

prince: 1802 AD culture victory

Spoiler :

Warrior 1W
Settler 1SW
then settled 1W of the initial rice on T1

After scauting and finding out I am isolated and have both marble and stone and industrious.... there was really no excuse not to win cultural.
I build almost every wonder, missed only few less important and oracle, because I wanted the to the the CS gamble again, but these AI weren´t so brain dead like in NC65

sometime around AS 1600 I went into a 48T long golden age (thanks to mausoleum and taj mahal.
found 4 religions and adopted 1

I didn´t find Shaka until very end..... I had little reason to even leave my island, all I did was build missionaries and built wonders and cathedrals with my 9 cities.

They had 20+ cities, but their technology was crap, even though my power was 0.3 lol
But I would have won anyway, I had 1 good production city.

I imagine if someone went for non peaceful win, it must have been long.
But Ais just tend to do extremely badly if they start isolated like this..... especially Shaka, who had quadrillion of caravels in his cities

seems like I wont be in prince too long..... but I am kinda scared of monarch

Prince/Normal/no random gambling/1954 Culture
Spoiler :

An isolated start? Ah, was pretty boring really. I did build too many axes to defeat barbs; should spawnbust better. Went for the pyramids, and built stonehenge for the hell of it. I also decided to build workshops all over the place. Oracled metal casting and got the collusus. I probaly should have thought about the Great Lighthouse once I saw Justinian, but sailing came too late.

I took a funny tech path. After Currency and Code of Laws, I went theology and built then AP under Confucianism ; since I had a bad feeling other religion wasn't going to reach me. I also founded Taoism but did little with it. Still I'd hit lib and then went for astro, bio, physics, and radio-- military techs weren't necessary at all. I managed to get the electricity/radio wonders fairly quickly and was able to use it to switch to emancipation. :p

I pretty much won a culture victory by accident. I was initially going for space, but for some reason even at 20% culture, my biggest cities would hit legendary soon thanks to the radio wonders and a G artist popped; so I went for max culture.

Near the end, I headed towards genetics, surprisingly Justinian had Genetics before I did. Everyone else was too busy fighting; I just ignored them, though occasionally they'd demand stuff like hit musicals which I gladly obliged; nice relations boost and it's only for 10 turns I had managed to make good friends with mostly everyone except Toku, but that's fine... everyone was still beating on him even as I was winning. My spaceship was halfway done as the game ended, meh. :p

Even though modern armor was available, my cities were guarded by these guys. I did build a few random infantry units in case of an invasion but that proved to be pointless

Spoiler :

lol, i think I actually failed to find the gems until later on. I remember sending a settler in that direction to get the west seafood. So it was forted as it couldn't be worked; i still get the happiness, but I guess there's no tile bonus.

Wait, I think you can't work the fish if you settle next to the gems.

Also, tours is awkwardly placed for me. It should be NE
