I'm up for a game. Just one rule... whoever plays me has to use the traditional move abbreviations, not that co-ordinate system crap. i.e. P-K4, B-QN5, etc

Or just "Bishop to Queen Knight 5" would be fine. Anyone want to play?

.

i already have 4 games, so i can not play you. well, icould, but it would be too much thinking on my part

The classic moves are definitive. And besides, NO IT'S NOT THE 90'S!!!!

In case you don't know what day it is, or even what year it is, I think they post the date all over these forums.... you should check it once in a while to make sure you are in the right decade.

Of course it is only traditional if you are in or derive from an English- or Latin- speaking country. If you hail from Germany or Northern Europe then the Algebraic system is traditional at least since the '90s (1890' that is

)

It is perhaps a curious thing that the Descriptive Notation should have lost out to the "continetal" (or German) system in the second half of the twentieth century when the English language seemed to be moving inexorably towards world domination.

Nevertheless you have my sympathy, TTG. I found it very painful to convert after probably ten years of using descriptive.

There are two or three parvenus who have indicated an interest in chess. If none of them pick up your challenge in a few days, I would be happy to play you in descriptive (but not the full nineteenth century version - we would soon run out of ink!)

If you want REAL descriptive notation, you'll need to write B-QKt5.

And sorry TTG, it seems like you haven't got a game yet. Me, I'm limiting myself to just two at any one time - later maybe. But some of the others seem available.

Now if I can just get Jon Speelman to do a simul for us...

I could play against you if it weren't for your conservative way of Notation!

And I do have threeee other games going.

Oh well. The invitation is still open, probably indefinitely.

Actually, I'm surprised that anyone would find the descriptive way confusing. It just makes so much sense. You name the piece you are moving the position you are moving it to. Of course, the positions are named based on the piece at the very front of that file and a number. For those of you not familiar with this system, the 5th row in the second file from the left (queen side) is Queen Knight 5 (or QN5). We all speak english here, right? English system it is!

For those of you not familiar with this
system, the 5th row in the second file from the left (queen side) is Queen Knight 5 (or QN5)

But from the other side it is QN4.That and differentiating king or queen side gets repetitive, tedious and confusing.

I also resisted algebraic notation for a long time. But eventually I had to admit, that, like the Metric system,it is superior. Its like the grid from the game Battleship. Each square has only 1 co-ordinate regardless of which side you are viewing the board from.
