so i am playing as denmark on king level. I am in the middle of the middle ages, no pun intended, lol. i am having some issues taking their capital. It is the babylon civ and they have an archer in def. I am attacking with 3 catapults, 3 swordsmen, and 2 knights as clean up duty, killing stray units that attack. Each time i attack i barely do any dmg, and my.swordsmen get slaughtered. Now next turn the city is fillled again. WIll i have to wait for a trebutet (sp)? Is there anyway to do this in this era. The bab city has walls too.

Any advice apprdciated, thank you

They will probably be gaining 5 hit points per turn. Your task is to do more damage per turn than they can heal.

"The Walls of Babylon" can be a pain to penetrate, but it can be done with enough of the right units. A Trebuchet or preferably 2 or 3 will help a lot... upgrading your Catapults would be the best. Try to upgrade your Swordsmen to Longswordsmen, they are a lot more durable, and will score more hit points.

The Knights are ideal to clear up, and can help by taking the city when you have it down to almost zero if you've already moved your Longswordsmen.

ahh okay, wanted to make sure i didnt do.something wrong. i was like wth. i did.dmg, but i see.now. ill have to suck up my man pride take the loss and move on. They had 7 cities now down to 3, the other two are 24 and 25. OUCH!!

Funny thing is i am being outclassed by siam and i am second. they lead in about every category and they are kicking my arse. Those elephants walked errr stomp me into the ground.

btw, follow up question for large city empires have 13 now and 57 gold a turn how mich of an army should i maintain at all times?

If you get yourself a great general, put him alone within their archer movement range, most likely they will be dumb enough to go after it, keep your units around the city so they cannot reinforce it from another town, kill the archer, that city should fall much faster since they cant hurt your troops as much as before.

Babylon is "the" early defensive civ, so much so that "turtling" and "beelining science" is virtually a guaranteed win, with the right policies, through emperor difficulty.

If your catapults are not upgraded to "city seige", and if your swordsmen don't have "cover", then no, I really don't think the numbers are with you. Trebuchets won't help much more unless they have "city seige". You need upgrades. Next time buy/build barracks. Also, un-upgraded swordsmen are "meat" standing outside walls of babylon. The AI probably ignores them.

For now? Build a couple barracks, get steel, maybe dow someone else and protect seige units while they upgrade. 3-4 longswords and 3 upgraded seige in a coordinated attack should take the city in 2-3 turns.

If their defensive rating is under 30, you should be chopping them to pieces. Around 35 or so, it's time to wait for trebs and longswords.

At least have one unit with cover. You'll also need a med unit. Move your cover unit in to absorb the first hit. It would be better if that unit somehow could have -1 damage to it. If there is a damaged unit, the ai always targets it. That way you could move in everything at once. Fortify your now damaged unit next to the med unit. Hopefully, you have bought yourself enough time for your siege guns to knock it down to take the rest.

What's the defense str of the Bab city? Is it at 20-def and above?

My recommendation right there is to swing to a weaker city, take it, hunker down for Riflemen and Cannons, and then go back and finish the Babylonians off.
