I hope I can get some correct answers here. I am running Windows 7 ultimate 64-bit based OS. Civ 3 seems to run great. I have a couple of questions:

1) When I play Civ 2 on my older PC with XP I can modify the City Names folder to use city names of my choosing or I can add to the list of given city names. Where is the file/folder that contains the city names for Civ 3. I do not want to change the name when the city is created I know how to do that, I want to pull the name from where the game does.

2) Is there a way to see the entire world map like in Civ 2 - You know in Civ 2 you could save a game - go to cheat mode - open the entire map - go back to the saved game to get rid of the cheat label... Can this be done in Civ 3

3) How do I get a download patch so that CivAssist2 works...what Civ 3 version do I need to get and where is it?

4) is the play the world patch any good? What does it give me???

Personally I hate Civ 3, Civ 4 and Civ 5 because I think they took things out that we all loved about it.
Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks....:)

I can only answere civassist question by saying instructions are available in this forum...try googling it.

when using W7 .sav files might be hidden. Instructions for finding them are availabel in this forum too.

Your best bet would be to look around in Customization/Creation section of the Civ3 forums. There is some text formatting you would need to do.

You can do that with CivAssist2 but you have to tweak its settings.

Try this link to a good CivAssist2 download >>HERE<<.

Play the World was the second expansion of Civ3. The third and latest version is Conquests, which is the default version that Civ3 Complete installs. It has more civs, new units, new wonders and a new corruption model.

I) You can edit the city names in the editor that ships with the game.
II) You should buy CivComplete or Conquests (don't buy Play the World) it is a much better game.

You can remove the fog of war via the editor in a couple of ways, although that will only reveal the terrain and city locations, not units, etc. Outside of Debug Mode, which isn't a good way to play a game, I don't know of a way to reveal everything.

The two ways that come in mind via the editor are via Fog of War editing for your player (map -> select brush type -> fog, after you have set the current player via spacebar), or, probably the better way, have a very early technology such as Pottery have the "Reveal Map" option checked on the Civilization Advances tab. The first of these options only works on preset maps, which is why the latter is probably better. Note that you'll be able to see the world after this, but it won't show you where units are. Civ3 doesn't have a cheat mode (besides Debug Mode, but you have to turn it on for the entire game), so this is the best you can get.

You can indeed edit city names for a scenario as Yoda Power mentioned. This is in the Civilizations tab. One city name per line. I recommend not messing with the barbarian city names as the game has issues if the number of barbarian city names change (IIRC it has to be 74, but I might be slightly off with that number).

II) You should buy CivComplete or Conquests (don't buy Play the World) it is a much better game.

It's also much buggier (submarine bug, cuturally-linked-starts-bug, bombard everywhere bug, etc.) and more imbalanced (armies, bombers). So I would recommend to make sure to buy a Complete version that includes executables for Vanilla and PtW. Not every version of Complete really does that...
