I know, I know, I could google this, but where's the fun in that? I have seen this tank in my town's local VFW parking lot ever since I moved here. Anyways, I want to know the specifics of this model. Here's a pic of the particular vehicle.

Looks like it's either an M-48 or M-60. Can't tell from the pic. They are much the same, as the 48 was an earlier version that was upgraded to the 60.

I have a bigger pic of it, if that would help any. But regardless, thanks for the quick response. This thing is within walking distance from my house and I absolutely love it.

EDIT: Resized photo

A bigger picture probably would help. I'm going to say M-60, simply due to how many were made, but a larger resolution photo may say otherwise.

All of the 48s are out of service now. So they could have a number for monuments. I think all, or nearly so, of the 60s are out of service as well, but there may be some with National Guard units still. You'd have to check.

It's a bit hard to distinguish the two from the OP photo (too much shadows), but the commander's hatch suggests that it is a M-48 tank. The turret profile gives it away though (more compact and more circular/rounded than the M60 turrets).

For second, I thought the thread title was "Need someone to think about this tank". I am disappoint.

Given what GoodGame posted, I'd say it's probably the M60. The track layout is the same; there's 3 of the upper wheels in the OP and the M60 and 5 in the M48.

I agree, the original M-60.

Nevertheless, it's incomparable to the M48 and M60.

No its not. M60 tank performed very well in the gulf war. It was a lot more mobile than the Abrams. The US forces would have performed a lot better if they had only used M60s. Its cheaper, lighter, easier to ship around the globe, and has a more reliable engine. Just because Abrams has some go-go gadgets, most of which can be backfitted into M60 and other even older tanks, doesn't mean that Abrams as an overall system is superior to M60.

M48 is another story, it is a rather old tank. But I really doubt that the 75 ton Abrams could have had the same effect in Vietnam. The Abrams doesn't even have a proper anti-personnel round to clear those bushes from Vietcong.

What ever it is, it looks sad :(

I think a .50cal and two 7.62mm machine guns fit the bill.

I missed that detail. I was thinking it was definitely a M48 based on turret and cupola, but then those upper wheels on the tracks are unmistakeably similar to the M60 photo that I posted.

It really is hard to tell since the M60 was technically a continuation of M48 design, plus there were several upgrades to the M60 that change it's appearance a bit.

I wonder if the OP it isn't a M48 that was given M60 treads, or a M60 hull given a M48 turret? IDK

Exposed fifty cal and a puny 7.62 coaxial, which is hardly enough against a numerous RPG armed enemy hiding in the foliage and behind covers. M48 can fire 90mm beehive rounds, which are hideous. Abrams fires canister shots from the 1700s.
