Nerds in Space

Spoiler :
I had a hard time coming up with a good nerdy idea for this post, I hope some quotes from the Thumb Wars movie are cool with you guys :)

Ha! Excellent report. I'm going to have to see Thumb Wars now, aren't I? Anyhow...

Roster:
Rex >>
Ozbenno
Pigswill (presumed MIA?)
Bindamel
Whosit
mlinneak <<Just played
Pholk << Up (If you're joining up.)

Pholk, let us know that you're with us. Otherwise, I can play tonight.

Okay, well I played us up to turn 300. Total slog fest. Killing went about 50/50, unfortunately. I had more than a few bad dice rolls and trebs that took three longbows down to 5.5. Grrr.

Anyway, I've got to go to bed, so full report tomorrow.

Well, friends, I just spent 45 minutes formatting a shart-full of images. I took 34 screen shots during my set. I'll only post about 23 of them here tonight, so lucky you. To that, I don't know if CFC ever removed the limit on screenies in a post, so I might have to split this up. Sorry. Anyway, on to underwhelming play!

To start it off, Backward culture #2's starships had us completely blockaded this set.

7 caravels birds of prey and five of them are in this screen shot...

Anyhow, let's asses the rest. Quadrant 1: Medina.

A quick tactical analysis says we ain't taking this planet.

Quadrant 2: Kufah

So I make two decisions.

  1. Move on to Mecca, leaving Medina be for the moment
  2. Run away at front two.

Yes, I know it seems the coward's way out, but that crossbow Jem'Hadar will kill our mace Starfleet Marine Corps Company in an Andorian Minute and our trebuchet forward deflector array can't hold up against anything. I decided to head to the forest tile moon. The mace could take a forest defense promotion and I figured I could get some supporting troops to that tile faster. So I pillaged the roads, ran to the trees. None too quickly, I see.

Civ4ScreenShot0102.jpg

Saladin had already countered.

Now back to the north, Mecca proved far less defended

Civ4ScreenShot0106.jpg

but that had the unfortunate side effect of leaving all those troops up in the Medina sector with nothing to do...except go on the offensive.

Civ4ScreenShot0108.jpg

Drat!

Civ4ScreenShot0110.jpg

I've heard that the Vulcan Philosopher Sarek has composed a poem to those brave defenders. An AT/AP and two axement actually took a lot of guys out with them, but that stupid camel long range desert recon unit prooved too much.

Part of my plan to try to keep the north in tact (read: Roman and nerdy), was to attack Mecca and hope their troops would do a 180. Instead, Sally reinforced his capital with a few more longbows by the time I had brought down his defenses. When the dust settled, here's where we lay:

Moved our Great General from the ass end of the galaxy to the capital and made an academy. Hope we weren't saving him for anything. Sorry if we were.

Now to the tactical. We have a lot of troops that we can't bring to the fight because of Sally's damnable navy. I made a ton of caravels (about six, I think) and have sunk a couple of his already. Down south, we have a bunch of galleys playing cat-and-mouse while I was able to city hop and use islands as barriers to get troops to the south front. But the north is still blocked. The next turn should decide that once and for all, I think...

Civ4ScreenShot0123.jpg

Not pictured is another of our Caravels nearby to the south of the frey. Sally's troops are heavily promoted, but they'll attack us in the coasts. At least they have been. I think we will come out of this with no more blockade.

Here's the power graph at the end of my set.

Ouch. Looks like our army of Red Shirts have been taking courses at the Stormtrooper Academy of Marksmanship. :) Shame we couldn't hold on to Najran, though it was pretty worthless to us anyway. Hopefully we can regain control of the sea, which should really help out. Is there much point to continuing this war? I believe our original objective was to acquire a source of Iron, but if that's not going to happen, perhaps we should explore peace?

we could take kufah, which is settled on iron, in a few turns then end it. I have We could probably take Mecca, too, if the bastard doesn't re-stock.

Stormtrooper Academy of Marksmanship!

"Terrific, TK421! You've hit the target twice out of 10 shots!!

apparently i've been skipped so ima pick it up now and try to clean up rex's mess

again

Looking forward to it. Though, wouldn't that quote be more like:

"Terrific, TK421! You've only missed the target by a margin of 20%! At ten meters! With a whole clip!" :P

Of course, I'm one of "those" people who note the fact that in several instances in the films, the Stormtroopers were actually being ordered to let the heroes escape . . . .

True ... difficult to follow dead people back to the rebel base.

Admittedly, dead people are easier to follow. It's just that whole "back to the base" thing you gotta work out...

Their elite forces still got beat by a bunch of teddy bears.

They were doing quite well for awhile. I've seen several explanations for their loss floated about, some of which seem rather reasonable.* Me, though? They just lost because they were the bad guys and it was the end of the Trilogy. ;)

*I think the big defender of the Empire is the guy who runs (ran?) stardestroyer.net. The short of it is, he points to real life examples of armies that should have had overwhelming odds against their opponents, but got cocky, were unprepared, or otherwise allowed their hubris to get the better of them, and they lost. I mean, if I were a stormtrooper, I wouldn't take a bunch of walking teddy bears seriously, either. And by the time they start smashing my walkers with giant logs, it's too late.

Also, there was that whole bit with Chewie hijacking one of the AT-STs. That certainly led to some confusion.

So, um, that Civ game! How's it goin'?

also, one of the best monologues about star wars was from clerks, debating teh relative merits of the rebellion killing millions of "civilian contractors" working on completing the new death star.

but we digress....

I adequetely picked up Rex's mess:
Civ4ScreenShot0009.jpg

only lost a unit in taking the city. I wanted to take one more city, but
Civ4ScreenShot0011.jpg

realized we don't have enough forces for a PRO archers on a hill, I took peace to regroup and restart teh war:
Civ4ScreenShot0012.jpg

we got education, too, but i put all our commerce into gold as I wasn't sure what the rules were for picking our techs...we should be able to run 100% sci for a good while, too.

I'm also trying to send our forces eastward. Let's take that island city and then that tiny one west of mecca...from there, i think we'll be in good shape to finish off Sally.

Great. I think we should concentrate on rebuilding our infrastructure for a bit.

Roster:
Whoever thinks (s)he's up, go ahead and play.

well, as its all islands, we don't have much worker things to do. i think we could produce some more troops, and finish off Sally and then rebuild. On this map type, a large continent like that is great real estate.

Roster:
Rex
Pholk >> just played
Ozbenno >> seems to be UP NOW
Bindamel >> on deck
Whosit
mlinneak

Pigswill (presumed MIA?)

yup, that's right. pholk's posting a roster in a game that's not his.

yes virginia, there IS a santa claus.

also, check out swordoftheflings.com

Give me a couple of days and I'll play.

They had Attack of the Clones on Saturday night and my 6 year old wanted to watch it, so we sat down and did so. I had blanked from my mind how god-damn awful it was, one of the most putrid movies ever.

This implies that you've blanked The Phantom Menace as well.

Oh.... you said "one of"... my mistake. ;)
