NES: Delusions of Grandeur

Le Belle Marine, Level 3 French transport ship, en-route to Franco-Quebecia:

The steam transport ship was very ornate, it sort of stuck out. It was large and clunky, some sort of modern-esque flagship. French transports were rated in three levels: One was a small quick transport that fit few people and little supplies, only good for near-by wars, in which troops needed be transported. Two was a medium bulky ship, capable of shipping horses, supplies, and people, able to make long distance trips(Nantes to atleast America, but not possible of circumnavigating the globe without a few stops, and Three were large flag-ships, capable of going from Nantes to French Indo-China in about 3 weeks.

Although level two transports would've sufficed for taking troops to Franco-Quebecia, Louis XVIII and his generals had decided that they needed to move mass amounts of conscripts(atleast 1/2 of those in the French mainland) to America for defense. The four transports en-route to Franco-Quebecia were level 3, all carrying supplies, horses, and people.

On board the Le Belle Marine was Ekran Gyan, a French-Indian who had joined the army a few years ago. He struggled to keep his mind straight as thoughts of war flooded his mind. Would he die? Would France become a second-rate power? No! France would prevail, and would aid Mexico in anyway possible!

"This war is the first major war France has fought, since the Asian wars in the 1850s, putting down colonial and anti-imperialist revolts in Franco-India, and French Indo-China..but this war will be much more. France will prevail, or it will fall. The latter is not an option." Ekran said quietly to himself, but it didn't matter what he said. A lowly foot soldier could not make a difference, he could only make sure that he followed his orders, and tried his best to aid his kingdom known as France.

Later that day..
Paris, France - Versailles Paris

Louis XVIII sat in his office, which was next to his bedroom. He laughed at the thought..over three hundred years ago, Louis XIV was enjoying Bourbon splendor in his Pro-Heugnot court, with lavished parties and balls, and now, Louis XVIII sat in a palace being modernized, with running water, electrity, and even a "telephone". It was odd, such an old item being redone to fit a modern man.

Louis was writing a letter, to the Mexican empress. Although Louis had never met her, portraits depicted her as a beauty beyond all beauty, rivaling empresses from fairy tale lands. Louis was swooned by such a woman, yet he had not even met her. Louis XVIII was destined to change that, and thus he composed a letter to send to the beautiful queen.

Secret Letter -
To: Maria Juanita, Serene Empress of the Holy Mexican Empire
From: Louis Bourbon XVIII, King of the Enternal French Kingdom

Dear Maria,
You may not know me from anything besides paintings and pictures, but I am King Louis XVIII, the king of France. You know I have chosen to aid you against American agression, and I ask for two things in return..one for the duration for the war, one..that would be for the rest of our lives.
Firstly, the French request a Right of Passage with your grand empire. We wish to ferry in small amounts of French troops to Mexico, to fight in your ranks. This would only last until the war ends, and we will happily end it afterwards.
Secondly, I..I ask for your hand in marriage, dear Maria. I am a king with no wife, and I see that you are a empress with no husband. I request your hand in marriage, for the sake of a enternal Mexican-Franco alligniance..and to also secure that our family lines to continue. I do not wish to impede into Mexican politics, and strip you of power. I merely want you as a wife, someone to talk to and love. I hope you will consider my requests, and I will in no way be offended if either are turned down.
Best Wishes,
Louis Bourbon XVIII, King of the French.

Imperial Throne Room
"Your higness, King Louis Bourbon XVIII, King of the French has sent you a letter, the topic of which, I do not know." said Padre Juan Pedro. "I believe it is of a personal matter, for it is marked with the French Seal and is marked as secret."
"Fine, leave me to read and reflect upon this letter." replied the Empres.
...............

After reading the King's letter, Maria took a deep breath. Marriage? She had been an Empress for such a short while and already someone wished for her to be their wife. While the young Empress did wish to strengthen her Empire's alliance with France, and she did think that the King was quite handsome (from portraits she had seen at least) she was concerned with losing power over her land. She began to write...

From Empress Maria Juanita Dicente La Segunda,
To King Louis Bourbon XVIII,

Your Royal Higness, I shall accept your first request to allow French troops to travel freely within our Empire. Your second offer intrigues me greatly, I am inclined to accept your offer of marriage, I do have one request. I wish to stay in Mexico, this is not to say that I shall never visit you in France, but I will always consider the Holy Mexican Empire my true home. If this changes your feelings at all regarding marriage, I would be happy to present one of my younger sisters to you as a possible wife. My younger sisters, Isabela-Lilia and Margarita-Aurelia both would have no objections to moving to your Kingdom. Both, are young and beautiful, and waiting to be married.

Yours Truly.
Maria Juanita

"Milord, a letter has arrived from the Mexican empess." A servant said, handing a letter with the imperial mexican seal on it. Louis quickly ripped into it, reading it as fast as possible without skimming over the details. He was glad he had gained a right-of-passage, and his marriage proposal was somewhat excepted..with the prospect that she remain in Mexico. He knew she would visit, and he could easily do the same..was it worth it?

Louis dipped his pen unto a fresh piece of partchment, and began to write.

To:Maria Juanita, Empress of the Holy Mexican Empire
From: King Louis Bourbon XVIII

Dearest Maria,
Thank you for agreeing to a Right of Passage, you will not be disapointed. As for your feelings with staying in Mexico, it does not change my mind. I understand how important a homeland is, and I too feel the same. Marriage to you would seal an alligniance between us for the rest of our lifetime, while marriage to one of your sisters would not.

I wish to marry you. It may not be for romance and love, but I'm sure it could become such a thing. You shall remain in your dearest Mexico, me in France. We can visit eachother perioditcally, perhaps 2-3 times a year? I hope this will work. A second matter before we can bound this proposal..is religion. You my dear Maria are a Catholic, my self Protestant. I am fully prepared to convert for the sake of this marriage(France has a Catholic majority anyways!), as long as we raise atleast one of our children in the ways of Huegnots..to claim my French kingdom. I only wish to secure my Bourbon line as Protestant, which it has been since 1589.

Best Wishes,
Louis Bourbon XVIII.

Louis placed his pen down, and took the letter, sealing it in an envelope, handing it off to the nearest servant to deliver. It would reach Mexico in a few weeks, hopefully.

OOC: Very stubborn French king here... ;)

IC:

Story:

Pleven refused to surrender. Amidst grenades (OOC: the big black round ones with fuses, not the modern ones) and artillery shells, the Arabs resisted fanatically.

They had no orders. Yet they fought bravely, they refused to surrender, they threw back assault after assault. In the nightmarish ruins of Pleven behind its great modern walls, they fought on, struggled on, lived on...

Yet they had no orders, and their generals barely had any personal initiative - such things were frowned upon in every army. This created a disciplinned force...

...but only when the telegraph was intact and the high command competent did it really work well. The Arabs held out heroically, their stand in Pleven became legendary for both sides, yet the city was surrounded, and even the bravest eventually give up. But they were not taken captive.

They - the few who lived that long - commited suicide rather then fall in enemy hands.

Andrey rubbed his hands and sat down on the carpet near the map. The three other generals sat down near him.

"Bulgaria is almost ours." - he commented.

"Indeed," - replied an old general - "but the cost..."

"Yes, yes. But our casualties are not as bad as we feared at first, and those who survived gained much experience." - said a younger one - "It is called christening by battle."

"I know what it is..." - the older one almost started a long and loud tirade, but Andrey stopped him with a gesture.

"We almost have Bulgaria," - he repeated - "and will soon have Thrace as well."

"Optimistic." - said the old general.

"Perhaps." - replied Andrey.

I was getting used to the burden of reign. Paperwork was largely assigned to a special group of advisors, apart from the most important matters. Mostly I remained in the palace, occasionally travelling to Kazan' or Narva, but, yes, mostly I remained in the palace.

Yet soon, I knew, I will have to travel south, to Armenia, to visit the frontlines. For the news were not very pleasant there.

The offensive suffered huge casualties at Trebzond. It was a pyrrhic victory. And the attack southwards stalemated already.

Still, the most important battles were in the Balkans. If Cesar-Gorod is taken, then we will be in position to sign peace. Favorable peace.

In all her time as Empress, even through the on-going war, alliances being formed and broken, Maria had never been as nervous as she was this moment. This moment, when she clutched the letter from the French King in her trembling hands. She slowly opened it and read. After reading the letter, she breathed a sigh of relief. She picked up her pen and began...

From Empress Maria Juanita Dicente La Segunda,
To King Louis Bourbon XVIII,

Dearest King, seeing as you have no problem with me staying in Mexico, I accept your proposal of marriage. Regarding the subject of religion, dear Louis, your conversion to the Catholic faith is not necessary, but if you wish too, I have no objections. Indeed one of our children shall be raised as a Protestant, as long as I have a Catholic heir to my throne. I look forward to seeing you soon.

Yours Truly,
Maria Juanita

OCC: Ah, royal marriage is such bliss, isn't it? :p

Louis was in his bedroom, yelping for pure happiness. He would be wed! His line was secure! And he didn't have to convert! This would be his last letter to Maria, for soon he would be visiting her. He had brought the prospect of marriage, and found it only right that they wed in her homeland..besides, he would be the first French king ever to step into Mexico.

He began to write.

To: My dearest Maria
From: Louis XVIII

Dearest Maria,
Please drop the formalities, you may call me Louis. Seeing as I have proposed marriage, I think we should decide on where we wed. I was thinking of the chapel in Mexico city. It would be exciting to visit America, I have only been to Franco-Quebecia in my visits.

As for the children, yes. One protestant, to live in France with me, and one Catholic, to live in Mexico with you. This is a fitting proposal I think for our..situation, don't you agree?

In just a few days, I as well as troops will arrive in Mexico. I will stay with you in Mexico, until this war is over. I will not sit idle as your empire is attacked by foreign devils! Maria, we will meet soon, and together our nations will drive America and her foes awa, and away!

I cannot wait to see you in person, feel your soft touch, and loving smile..
Love, Louis

Louis rose from his seat, handing the letter to a servant. He grinned.

"Send this to Maria, and get my steam ship ready! I'm going on a trip."

"During war?" The servant exclaimed. Louis shook his head.

"No! I am off to Mexico, I will not sit idle and let my soon-to-be wife be harmed by American devils!" Louis yelled, causing the servant to leap up. So that was why Louis was sending letters to the Mexican empress..the servant looked around.

"Tell the court of your engagement sir?" The servant asked. Louis shook his head. He didn't want this to be international news, not UNTIL this wretched war was out of the way. Louis trugged past the servant, he needed to get to Nantes.

Le Belle Marine, Level 3 French transport ship, anchored in Montreal, Franco-Quebecia:

The four transport ships had arrived in Franco-Quebecia, men and supplies spilling out, just incase the Americans prepared some sort of naval blockade later or something even worse.

Spilling off the ships came food, horses, men, artillary, items for factories, and weaponry and armor for any soldiers that were needed. Since the war was declared, there was more conscription, and resting soldiers from Franco-Quebecia had been called up to the front lines.

Ekran Gyan stared in awe at Montreal, a massive Franco-Quebecian city. It was a major port so it seemed, and where the base of operations for the war against the Americans would happenen. Rumors were all abuzz in the city when Ekran had arrived, they said the king was going to visit! It seemed stupid for the king to visit a battle ground..

Orleans De Medici, Royal Steamer, en-route to Mexico:

The King's ship was more luxerous than any other French ship. It was fast, light, and capable of getting Louis to Mexico by the end of the day..on a normal day. They were taking a long route, down Iberia, then turning avoiding any British ships. They hoped to get to Mexico in 3 days tops, although they were sure to meet resistance.

Stat Update:

Everything is the same except for army. It goes up from Medium to Large, many conscripted men, and some noble men were called into battle.

Communisto, where art thou? Your empire is falling...

IC:

"It still holds."

"I know." - I grumbled. The Russian forces were at Cesar-Gorod for two weeks now. At, but not in. The city continued to resist. And meanwhile, Omar Fashid, the Hill Fox, has succesfully cut off and forced the surrender of an entire division in Anatolia... The war was no longer moving anywhere. The Arabs will now be able to regroup, and to strike again with all their might. And then, all the sacrifices might as well be in vain.

There were some good news, ofcourse. The Greeks were rebelling again in enemy lands. But in Cesar-Gorod, there were so few Greeks now...

---

Shamil quickly jumped to the floor, as yet another shells exploded not too far away. He closed his eyes, avoiding the dust storm.

He got lucky again. Still alive.

The Russian infantry stopped assaulting the city after suffering the huge casualties, especially from the fastshooters (machine guns). The fastshooters were bought from unknown sources briefly before the war, to protect the strategic point, and now they served their purpose.

Yet what came after the infantry was much worse.

"...aim!" - shouted Tamaran - "Aim... FIRE!"

One after one, the enormous cannons, transported here by a makeshift railroad built by forced labor units, fired their thunderous volley. Shells, filled with shrapnel, flew over the ancient walls of Constantinople and slammed into houses, mosques and - occasionally - enemy positions.

Tamaran felt himself to be a stormbringer, a God of War. He ceased these thoughts immediately - this was a CRUSADE, and he compared himself with a god, a pagan one but a god nonetheless?! How dare he?

But he WAS a stormbringer.

"Load!"

Desatnik Ivan Berestov's diary

"AUGUST 2ND - Still no breakthrough. The Arabs stopped sending out foragers. The artillery bombardment continues. Will there still be a city left when we enter it?

AUGUST 3RD - Nothing new. But there are rumors that a new assault will come soon.

AUGUST 4TH - Odd men in black robes were briefly seen today. I thought there were Arabs, but the tisachnik himself told me not to snipe them. Something is very odd.

AUGUST 5TH - The artillery barrage became very intense, but now it is oddly quiet. I..."

[INTERRUPTED]

"[AUGUST 5TH] - What a battle it was. It still sends chills into my heart. And here I was thinking I saw it all... As the artillery barrage stopped, we were ordered to assault the city. Their devilish machines were intact, as I soon found out, but then - they were manned by those strange men in black. They assaulted the enemy citadel and various positions from within (how did they do so is unknown) and so we managed to break in. Still, the fighting was, though quick, very costly. Sergey... alas. We remember our fallen."

Stat Edit:

-1 Army for me. -1 Army for Meccans as well, they IMHO lost a lot of men during the recent campaigns. So unless Communisto says otherwise...

The Warrior looked out over the plain, where he saw the innocent white men with their stagecoaches and fancy clothes, looking over the outcrop. He motioned his warriors closer, to the the edge of the ridge. They were ready to fight, and would all fight to the death. It was time for the Australians to reclaim their continent in entirety.

_________________________________________________________________________

"Chaaaaaaaaaarge" Yelled the leader, and from the ridge thousands of figures poured over, seemingly endless. This was surely a battle that would be remembered.
As the Charge began, the white men began to run, they were heading to the port, most likely to flee intro the great ocean.

As the Natives ran down, into the streets of the town, they saw the signs of a ghost town, eveyrwhere was abandoned, boarded up, this seemed like a deserted town, yet as they had been told it was the most populous city in the region. Something was awry here.

They broke into every house, every store, all deserted, everything gone from inside. Then they came around, heading towards the port, where but a few ships lay, but no, a large vessel was there, the commander saw, something was going on, but he had no means in which to call back his troops.

_________________________________________________________________________

Janoy rounded the last bend, and only a short sprint across a field was the gates to the walled harbour, he and his comrades charged, yelling chants, sure they would find the people and possesions they had so much expected, all of a sudden a loud bang, the warriors didn't konw what it was, many stopped dead in their tracks, then, huge explosions and all of a sudden dirt was flying and many men fell down, motionless. Where had they came from the natives wondered? Only one way to find out. The scattered troops rushed. This was their signal, their time to take the initiative.

*back up the cliffside*

The flag holder ordered the artillery up to fire, and fire they did. Although they had insufficient range to reach the ships deep in the water, they did have enough to blow the wall to pieces. And onwards the little black dots pored into the port, finding the civillians inside, and also many redcoats waiting for them. With their first volley, the tide was stemmed it appeared, but then the natives pored in in volume, hacking and killing all.

"Call for the Navy" the gereral said.

The flag bearer then pulled out a red flare and shot it into the sky. This was the other signal. Soon after ships pored in, making quick work of the british schooner. The navy did the trick, as with the suprise; the British thought the ships were all along the Wattakpura River, mothballed. But no, they had set to see many moons ago, and here they were, and a beating they delievered to the British. Soon afterwards all resistance was exterminated, and the town and port, with supplies was theirs!

The tapping of the Admirals footsteps echoed erirly out on the Meiji, the command ship of the Imperial Navy's Hawaii division. Their fleet of 20 Fuji Battleships, and 20 Hiei Corvettes sat floating 100 miles outside of the coast of Mexico. The Mexician's knew that they were coming now, their was no doubt. All 140,000 men wer being transported by the boats, and it would a fierce invasion force as the men attempted to do their Emporer's bidding.

The Admiral smirked as he reached the command center. It had begun, now. "All ships," he spoke into the microphone, "move out." World War I had begun in earnest.

After the shelling, and subsequent capture of one of the Mexican's port cities on the Californian front, the troops unloaded onto the land of the Mexican empire. Taking care to sqaush out any remaining resistance in the city, the troops dispearsed, and established a base camp to plan their invasion from.

From the captured city, the Battleships went out to intercept a Mexican fleet en route. The troops on the other hand, went about with the capture of the the rest of the Califorian territories, an easy task for the Japanese soldiers thanks to the Mexican focus on the American front. Few battles were fought by the ground troops, and no major engagements had happened...yet. It was only a matter of time before the Mexican Empire responded to the Japanese invasion...only a matter of time.

Write one then. :p No, in seriousness, I WAS going to write of a great loss near Detroit, but you did that before I could get there.

Jason The King said:
You know, you cant win them all! I want to read some losses!

Why did you think I didn't write about the Naval battle? I don't feel like writing about my own defeat, I'm letting him do it for me.

OCC: Well, I guess I should do my duty as France. :p It makes sense, we sent a bunch of conscripted soldiers with 1-2 years of training, with out of date equipment!

Quebecia-American Border:

A garrison of Quebecian soldiers sat with poise. They waited in a meager fort for the chance to fight. They were guerilla's meant to tease the Americans. It was silly for a garrison, especially such an important one to do so. But they would follow their orders.

The telegram machine began to bleep. It was the signal. The men poured out of the Garrison, about one hundred. They rushed forward towards the American garrison, yelling out.

"For the ancien regime!"

"For the king!"

"For France!"

The men ran past the trees quickly towards the American garrison. Some took aim..

BAM!

Shots flew out, smashing into Quebecians as they struggled for a mad-dash towards the fort. They were out-numbered, and their equipment was ill. More shots flew, knocking more men down, killing them. The old rifles for the conscripts would not do!

Screams of pain and agony filled the air, as blood painted the Quebecian/American border red. It was over for the guerrillas, they had failed. A few who saw the shots quickly had fled back into the fort, locked it tight, and began telegramming Quebec.

"SEND SUPPLIES."

The telegram began to travel towards Quebec and the provincial government.

Nation Name: The Empire of Brazil
Age: 294 Years old; Late Industrial
Army: 100,5000 well trained troops
Navy: 15 fairly modern ships
Government: Constitutional Monarchy (More about this later)
Religion: Catholicism
Economy: Laissez-Faire capitalism

Description:
Brazil is one of the greater powers in South America, and in the western hemisphere in General. It was settled by the French in 1605. After the Protestant King Henri De Bourbon took the French throne, a number of prominent catholics left France en mass. One of the most prominent was nearly every member of the House of Orleans. Grateful that his closest catholic rival was gone, he generously granted the fledgling colony independence under the rule of the Orleans family.

The colony soon thrived, not only because of its size and resources but also because of its great freedoms. Brazil has a very unique government. The government is divided into two branches. The Executive branch, which is headed up by an Emperor with extreme power. Then there is Consitutional-Judicial branch which is most unique. Although there is no parliament, there is a constitution. This constitution outlines the various powers the Emperor has. It is heavily guarded by a number of different beurocratic committees and a totally independent judicial system.

The Constitution grants freedom of speech, assembly, separate powers between the Emperor and the Judge, and outlaws slavery. Because of this, Brazil has attracted a number of emigrants. The Nation is very rich because of its history and although not a terrific military power, one that could hold its own.

Time Line

1610- French catholics leave en mass to Brazil. Henri De Bourbon grants independence to the new colony of Brazil, and the Orleans branch of the Bourbon family sets up a monarchy.

1625- The Ascension of Maximillion Orleans to the throne, and the declaration of absolutism which declares his absolute power.

1626-1645- The Constitution wars which result in the constitution, separation of the Judicial and executive branches of the government, abolition of slavery and the replacement of Maximillion with his younger brother Leto Orleans.

1645- The ascension of Leto Orleans.

1675- The act of toleration, where Leto, on his death bed, added religious toleration to the constitution.

1675-1703- The Succession wars in which the Orleans family is replaced by the House of Montgomerie.

1705- Death of Emperor Louis Montgomerie and accession of Empress Cosette Orleans; The restoration of the house of Orleans.

1720- Marriage of Cosette Orleans to the Prince Louis Montgomerie II

1722- Pragmatic Sanction of Orleans; The constitutional act in which only the Orleans family, under that name, may rule Brazil.

1754- Death of Empress Cosette and ascension of Francois Orleans I.

1761-Second Act of Absolutism by Francois Orleans I

1762-1794- Second Act of Absolutism; beginning of the second Constitutional wars; The Replacement of Francois by his niece Claudette Orleans. The Destruction of the old Capital Le Brazil de Ville Royal, and the construction of the new capital L’eau De Ville, on the mouth of the Amazon.

1800- Ascension of Francois Orleans II

1854- ascension of Cosette Orleans II

1894- ascension of Victoria Orleans I

The City of L’eau De Ville was a beautiful metropolis. It had been built at the end of the second constitutional war as an attempt by the committees of the constitution to thwart the power of the Emperor. It had grown into a beautiful mix of Paris and Venice.

The city sat in the mouth of the Amazon, where the mighty river flowed into the Atlantic ocean. It laid, like a sprawling duchess, across a number of islands, which were themselves cut by canals. Bordering these canals were great trees that kept pedestrians cool. On each roof in the city, more gardens kept the hot Brazilian sun off the city inhabitants.

In the Imperial Palace, in Central L’eau De Ville the Empress Victoria sat in a courtyard. She and her ladies were garbed in silks, and examining vast quantities of gems, materials, lace and other luxury items that had come from france.

In the shadows, the Chancellor Montgomerie, who was a distant relation to the old Emperor watched with bemusement. Ever since the Empress Cosette had turned mad, he had protected the little Princess Victoria like a father. And once Cosette died, he could use his growing political power to make her Empress, instead of her cousin who was the rightful son of Cosette.

He led his paternal moment pass before stepping into the flittered light of the courtyard. He bowed stiffly and became very serious.

“Madame” he said. Victoria looked up, mid laugh. Although she was young, Montgomerie admired her natural diplomatic skills. A quick survey of the ladies of Victoria was enough to muster this opinion.

Among her ladies only a few were pure born French. Most were creoles, the vast educated middle class in Brazil, the mixed bloods. It was these Bourgeois Creoles that helped prop up the monarchy, not the insanely wealthy great houses who were more rivals.

“Yes My Lord Chancellor?” Victoria asked, becoming the grave brace leader Montgomerie had brought her up to be. “Madame, the Empire of America has declared war on the Holy Empire of Mexico” the laughter and happiness of the Imperial ladies fled. They all became grave. “Yes... my lord?” “Japan too attacks..” There was silence. “The French, our ancestors and our mother has come to the aid of Mexico.” More silence. “Mexico is catholic. Mexico is a former european colony and now mighty empire. Mexico is practically our sister..” The Empress said nothing. “You” The Chancellor said to one of Victoria’s creole ladies. “If your sister and your mother were offended would not you be offended?” “Yes My Lord” The creole said. “And if your sister and your mother took on an enemy, would not you take that same enemy?” “Yes My Lord”.

The Chancellor looked back to the Empress. “You do wise Madame, to employ such thoughtful and wise courtiers” There was admiration in his voice. “I see there is no other course...” Victoria said. “We must too become involved...”

To Her Imperial Majesty, Empress Maria Juanita of Mexico

My Sister, it has come to our attention that Mexico, a most brave land, has come under the attack of the cruel northern nation of America. It is our sincere hope that our armed forces may aid your cause. As we speak Brazil is mobilizing. We hope that in order to rush our troops to your front, we may acquire a right of passage agreement. Do write soon, so that our generals may plan further attacks,
Her Imperial Highness, the Empress of the Brazilian People, Dama Primus and Executor of the Empire of Brazil.

"Sir, the French have attacked Vermont. Our unprepared small garrison at Fort Henry held them off for now, but we cannot expect to win a four front war!" The president remained in his chair, expresionless. This had been the fourth battle he heard of today, and the only one where his soldiers were victorious in it.

"Send an emissary to Paris. Give the message to the king that the Americans are not out for imperialism, we are fighting the Mexicans for freedom. Tell them we are making the continent safer for French, American, and British alike. And if they dismiss the emissary, give the threat of all out war."

"Yes, Mr. President."

Meanwhile, the Mexican War, while starting out very agreeable to the Americans, had spilled nearly to the American border. Due to most of the trained troops being withdrawn and sent to Michigan, there were only a handful of veterans among the conscripts in Texas. The Mexicans, on the other hand, were deploying their best soldiers at prime locations, beating the President's weakspots with minimal losses and maximum affectiveness. But with the Japanese invasion, Roosevelt could give a sigh of relief. The Mexicans would almost surely re-evaluate their priorities and send the best men to the west coast.

Meanwhile, fighting with Michigamme had stalemated. After the redeployment of American regulars to Detroit and other border cities, the Americans were able to push the invasion back to just a few miles from the Michigamme border. The use of the new Jackson Artillery was very effective against Michigammans, who were used to fighting most natives and ill-equipped British soldiers.

As Roosevelt took another sip of his tea, he began to relax. This was the first time he could relax in several months. He rang the bell for more tea, and sulked lower into his chair until he finally succombed to sleep.

In the Imperial Throne room Maria was handed two letters. One expected, from her beloved fiance, and one, not so expected. From the Empress of Brazil. After reading the letter from King Louis, she ordered that La Basilica de Nuestra Dama de Guadalupe (The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe), be prepared for a grand wedding ceremony, for whom, she did not divulge to her servants. After that matter was taken care of, she began to read the letter from the Brazilian Empress, after finishing, she began to write...

To Her Imperial Highness, Empress Victoria of Brazil
From Her Most Serene Empress, Maria Juanita Dicente of Mexico

Dear Victoria, I shall allow your troops to move freely through my Empire. As long as you agree they shall be removed after this war. Also, after the American devils have been beaten back, I hope that our nations may become strong allies.

Truly,
Maria Juanita Dicente La Segunda.

A great number of transport ships, accompanied by five battle ships, approached the Florida peninsula. Brazil had been consumed for most of her history with internal wars. Yet as most of her internal problems had been sorted out, she was ready to expand.

********

A fleet of transport ships accompanied by five battle ships sailed into the carribean. The Government was very pleased at this opportunity that had presented itself, this “World War” as some were calling it. They had their eyes on the rich sugar islands, that created such vast profits.

They would unload on Cuba first. Then Haiti, then the other major islands in the carribean. They met no opposition and it was not more than a month or so before the carribean was firmly in Brazilian hands.

A moderate number of troops were sent to the carribean islands. Others were garrisoned to be sent to Mexico, and to guard the homeland.

********

In her exquisite city of water, the Empress looked over this with wide eyes, while her paternal chancellor explained to her the details and complexities of war. It had been he who had ruled the country in reality since Victoria had taken the crown. Yet he was a kind and good man and she was pleased to have him as her guide.
