ORGANISATON OF THE ORDER OF SAINT MARTIN
The original idea of the creator of the holy order was to organize several Christian Knights under his banner and with the support of the Church and the King train a strong army of full time soldiers. However soon after the first missions in Berberia and Varidrung the way of the order had enveloped to something different. As the outlets of the wars were rather unknown one of the first things to do in both of the war theatres was to build their fortresses. Grand walls of stone and high towers often armed with cannons protected the crusaders on their quest in the Berber lands. In these castles the Order often operated months, or maybe even years with only limited if any contact with allied forces. In these times a structure enveloped which soon would become the structure of the entire Order of Saint Martin.
THE KNIGHT
Nobles from all over Visgothia and sometimes from even further away were the most important faction. Although being few in numbers they were excellently trained and equipped. In battle they wore full body armour, a shield with the emblem of the order and a lance. Besides their lance it was common to have a secondary weapon which was used when the lance broke or was lost. War hammers, morning stars or a broadsword often ornately decorated with Christian symbols and sayings.
THE CHAPLAIN
Monks, missionaries, pastors and preachers accompanied the Order even deep inside enemy lands. And they were desperately needed. Not only did they have to satisfy the religious needs of the army, they also acted as healers. After each battle hundreds, maybe thousands of crusaders needed serious medical attention. Soon the chaplains of the Order become excellent healers. There was even a religious order of monks who had gathered that huge amounts of medical knowledge that they were considered as one of the best doctors in the Christian world.
THE SERGEANT
Recruited from richer burgesses the main motivation of these mostly young crusaders is the dream of great adventures and treasures in foreign lands. However many more serious sergeants are more ambitious and want to rise to knights within the order. The only way to promote to a knight is by showing great devotion to the lord and by outstanding performance in combat. However the final step in becoming a knight is a dangerous religious ritual which is always performed behind closed doors. Only rumours are known about it
The military role of the sergeant is that of a light or medium horseman. They are sometimes used as scouts, but most oftenly they are used to crush enemy archers or to support the knights. One special feature of the sergeant is that he is, unlike the knight, allowed to use thunder weapons. Light cavalry armed with thunder sticks are one of the strong aspects of the Order of Saint Martin.
THE SERVANT
Every organisation needs a low class. The servants of the order are mostly serfs although some are free farmers and craftsmen. They farm the lands around the castles and the smiths maintain the armours and weapons of the army. Like the chaplains they accompany the knights even deep into enemy lands. If the castle or camp is attacked they defend it against the attackers and they have a minimal training. In open field battles some servants form archer units and some are even trained as thunder stick gunners.
And I will execute great vengeance upon them with furious rebukes; and they shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall lay my vengeance upon them.
