Letter from Lord Russell to the Portugese Government:

Sir,

It is my obligation to notify you of the following. Your unprovoked attack upon the Holy Roman colony of Neugranada leaves the Federated Kingdoms, which are bound to the Holy Roman Empire by a Defensive Pact, no choice but to deliver you the following ultimatum:

Portugal has two weeks to accept responsibility for its actions and begin full and unconditional withdrawal from Neugrenada.

Furthermore, Portugal will pay six million pounds to the Holy Roman Empire, after the internal crisis in the country is over, for the damage inflicted upon the colony.

Even further, as punishment for its aggressive actions over the last three years Portugal will dismantle its fleet and limit it to no more than fiveteen squadrons of ships and will pay the Federated Kingdom four million pounds for the trouble it has caused.

In addition to that the Porguese ports in South America and Africa will be opened to all Federated Kingdoms' ships.

I must also inform you that the Parliament has voted three days ago to authorize the use of force by the Federated Kingoms against Portugal if these conditions are not met. We hope for your cooperation.

Lord Russell,
Foreign Secretary of the Federated Kingdoms

From: Persia
To: FK

We are concerned at the double game that the world's foremost power seems to be playing, honoring only half of it's Mutual Protection Pact. We wish for the FK to put us at ease, and assure us that you aren't simply declaring war on Portugal (and not Sweden) for territorial gain, and furthered imperialism.

With utmost respect,

The Islamic Council

To the Federated Kingdoms
From Portugal

We echo Persia. You throw the imperialist bit at us When you have the biggest empire in the world. When you have had rebellions against your rule in the last few years. When you declare war on us to gain almost the whole of South America. When you decide to honor parts of treaties that are most beneiful to you. The South American colonies still support the Kaiser, so why help them if they are supporting the 'enemy' of the German people? Why not fight the powers that invaded mainland Germany?

We will not do anything specified in the treaty, the FK does not rule the world. If need be, we will show you this.

Letter from the Secretary of Lord Russell to the Islamic Council of Persia

Dear Sirs,

We here at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were very surprised to receive a letter from you, especially concerning the events that are taking place in Europe and between European powers. After a very thorough examination of the latest political maps available to us we have not discovered a country named "Persia" neither in Europe nor in South America. After a very erudite member of the staff recalled that he had heard something about Persia in relation to India we have managed to locate your country on the map, and were very surprised that it is in no way connected to neither Portugal nor Sweden. Since a comunique from a country in Asia such as yours is of a low priority we chose not to trouble Lord Russell with it and are forwarding to you a copy of the speech that he has made to the Parliament of the Federated Kingdoms. We are not sure wether English is an acceptable language in your country but copies in Dutch and Norwegian are also available if you wish to request them. In the future, please justify your requests to the Ministry with some legitimate claim or concern.

Secretary of Lord John Russell.

OOC:

In 1946 Beria comes to Joseph Stalin and says, "Joseph Vissarionovich, the Pope of the Roman Catholic Church sent a request to us, asking to allow Roman Catholics to practice their religion freely in our Great Country."
Stalin thought for a second, rubbed his chin, and then asked Beria, "How many divisions does this Pope have?"

Yes, 6 million pounds = 6 EPs, and so 4 million = 4 EPs

Interesting. We certainly have serious doubts as to the aptitude of your staff, if they cannot locate Persia, a valuable regional ally of the Federated Kingdoms, on a map.

However, a certain "erudite member of our staff" advised us that this was merely a veiled metaphor, attacking both the validity of Persian opinions, and the importance of Persia itself. Apparently a helpful message about an apparent contradiction in Federate foreign policy, one that our Ambassador found quite perplexing, is met with disdain from a "superior" nation.

In the past two years, cooperation between our nations has been enormous, and it was only Persian industry and resolve that saved your Major General van Derhuyt and the Army of Afghanistan from certain defeat, unless of course you had forgotten.

Persia prides itself on it's awareness of foreign affairs, and was merely seeking a clarification. We have often suffered from European intervention in the past, most notably under the Zand Dynasty, only recently deposed.

If a simple query is met with a blatant insult, perhaps a revision of our diplomatic standing with the Federated Kingdoms is in order.

Sincerely,

The Islamic Council

Signed by Shah Ardashir IV

EDIT:

OOC: The logical contradictions of your policy were just too great. You refused to attack Sweden on the grounds that it was fighting the authoritarian Kaiser, but then declared war on Portugal, which was in effect doing the same as Sweden, fighting the Kaiser. The Persian Ambassador, who is of course fluent in English, forwarded the speech to the Islamic Council, who merely sought an assurance that Britain didn't want to control all of S. America.

Speech given by Charles XV of the House of Bernadotte (King of Sweden) before the Riksdag

Upon this day in history, we stand at a cross-roads. For many years much of Europe has been crushed underneath an iron fist of the new Kaiser of Germany, and the oppressed called out desperatly for aid. Yet no one heard them, even as Hungry made their rebellion, and men across the sea fought for freedom.

I too opressed the people, and I controlled the Absolute power of this state alone, with only the aid of advisors, and not to people to guide me. I invested into a grand academy of education, thinking that it would provide for us prestige, and honor in its hallowed halls.

Yet in the books that were placed in the great University, I found books of history, and on philosophy. In my readings I learned of the ancient history of the Greeks: I learned of Athenian bravery at the Battle of Marathon; the Spartans stand against Xerxes tyranny in the pass of Thermopylae. Similarly, the city in the provice of Rome, Nursia, who fought for liberty and freedom in the battle of Mutina against Mark Antony.

A slogan was born from the battle of Mutina, "Pro libertate eos occubuisse..." which echoes on through history, as our brave soldiers fight for Freedom and liberty in northern Germany for our Friends the Reichstag of New Prussia. They died for liberty, Pro libertate eos occubuisse.

I have learned from those ancient heroes, who died for what was right, and for those you fight in Northern Germany now, fighting to liberate an opressed people, and end an unjust regime. I learned that freedom and liberty are the most blessed goals to strive for, and to die for. I gave up many of my powers for liberty, and even as our grand military fights its battles in Northern Germany, I will give up many more so that this country of Sweden, the land of the hardy north, will become free, and just.

I also look upon all of you gathered here in this Riksdag, all of you nobles of privlege and honor, of wealth and stature. You have been blessed by God, with intelligence, wealth, and power. Yet this country is not as free as it should be, with all its blessings. Our army fights for liberty, yet we are not fully free. A just God would not give so many blessings to this great country if he wanted it to be opressed, uncertain, and weak. He wishes for it to be free, just as he wishes all peoples to be free under his Son Jesus Christ.

Our men fight for liberty, praying that God with his Providence will protect them, and grant them strength as we sit within this room, praying for liberty, justice, and victory. As they fight, we too should also fight. We should fight for our own Freedom, so that Sweden itself may be thought of a bastion of liberty, justice, and freedom. I ask of you, men of great power, much as I was almost a year ago to consider what God calls all of us to do: Did he not free the Israelities from the opression of the Egyptians, did he not free us of the burden of sin by sending his eternal and only son Jesus Christ to die for us?

Our God wishes for liberty, for freedom, and as men blessed by God we should do our best to follow this, do our best to end opression where ever it lives, and to give freedom to the conquered. We must always understand the difference between conquest and liberation, and choose the latter above all things.

We have liberated Northern Germany, helping their rebellion at their plea, and we will continue to fight until they are free. We have raised our hands toward God, and ask for his guidence in our quest for liberation, for freedom, for life. Our soldiers die for freedom now, and we will fight until there is freedom in Germany. Pro libertate eos occubuisse, and I pray that their noble sacrifice will be honored above all things.

The above speech was given on Janurary 17th 1865 to the entire gathered Riksdag. His inspiring speech gave hope and light to the reformers in the Kings court, while its message and moral changed the minds of many of the stalwart nobles who wished to keep power consolidated in the upper classes, although some still disagreed with his ideas on expanding freedom in Sweden.

Backed by many of the nobles, and almost all of the people when his speech began circulating the Swedish and northern German cities as a phamlet, the King began enacting numerous reforms to give more freedoms to the lower class in Sweden, reforming the Justice system, and several other Riksdag proposed reforms that the newly enlightened King quickly signed into effect.

Public support for his cause to free northern Germany has risen quickly in the Riksdag and the general populace, who now wish to see Sweden defeat the tyranny of the Holy Roman Empire while at the same time redeeming Swedens defeat at the Holy Roman Empire's hands several years before.

The motto of Nursia after the battle of Mutina, "Pro libertate eos occubuisse...", quickly became a slogan in Swedish to refer to the troops fighting in Northen Germany. The ideals of freedom and liberty have found a home now in the Swedish peoples: the nobles, common people, and King's hearts and minds.

Letter from Lord Russell to Shah Ardashir IV

Dear Sir,

The Persian government can indeed pride itself on its knowledge of foreign affairs, as it has over the last few years very skillfully played the diplomatic game by cooperating with the Federated Kingdoms and acting as an ally while in reality plotting and cooperating together with the French Empire.

In case you have forgotten, it is most likely the fact that over one hundred thousand Federate soldiers have intervened on your bahalf in the war that you are able to write to me today. As a "reward" for this we receive your intrigues and plots to cooperate with the French.

I have tolerated these ploys of yours with amusement for the most part, but since you bring it up a "revision of our diplomatic standing" is probably in order.

Let me bring clarity into the issue. Persia is a country of small importance in this World, and while the Federated Kingdoms is interested in the region this interest allows you neither to send lightly veiled insults to the Federate Government nor to attempt to dictate our foreign policy. I am really amused that you expected anything more than an insult in return for it.

You are free to write to me when you have a legitimate concern about the Federate actions or positions on issues that concern you, but it is little more than a bother when you write on issues of South America and Europe since your oppinion on those is most unimportant.

I hope that all of the misunderstandings that have been caused have been cleared up.

Lord John Russell,
Federate Foreign Secretary

It was a rough night. The waves had been slowly rocking the ship, back and forth. The motion that makes you sick to your stomach, makes you feel sorry you joined the Navy. A young man in his early Twenties was on night watch, and was engaging in a peculiar conversation with another.

"So lad, how long have you been in the navy?" asks the elderly man.

"But a few months, I was promised good pay, and a war to keep myself busy." said the young man.

"Lad, you must have never been in a war. It is not something to be proud of, or to boast about. It isn't how the books, or newspapers portray it. Hundreds of innocents die. When you receive that order to shell the village, even if it has done nothing, it makes you feel horrible. But you know you must do it, because anyone who doesn't is portrayed as a coward." said the old man.

"Well, it is time for me to head in." said the young man.

"Good night." replied the older.

As the young man lay in bed, he thought of what was said to him. He thought of tomorrow. He was anxious, for there was rumors of a naval attack on a nearby city.

As he figured it out, this battle would challenge him in all of his abilities.

OOC: This a story? Merely a prelude to one I am writing. I don't suck at story writing that much. :p

From Prime Minister Gladstone to Lord Cardwell and Lord Goschen

Good Sirs,

As we have expected Portugal has refused the demands that our Government has put in front of it. Because of that, using the power granted me by the Act of Parliament, I ask you to prepare both the army and the navy for a military operation against Portugal. You have permition and my full backing to relocate and organize our fleet and army as you see fit. I will meet with you to plan further actions within a few days. Until then I wish you both the best.

Willian Ewart Gladstone

To New Prussia, World
From Sweden
'

Many nations have questioned Swedens desire to invade the Holy Roman Empire, accusing noble Sweden of trying to expand its power by conquering the Holy Roman Empire with no thought for the laws of War. But Sweden did not invade upon a whim of conquest, but on a desire to liberate, and free the opressed people of the Holy Roman Empire by fighting on the side of the Stralsund Reichstag, and now the new nation of New Prussia.

To assuage all these attacks upon Swedens honor, Sweden offers a treaty to the nation of New Prussia, to make certain that all gains that Sweden makes be returned to its rightful owners.

The Treaty of Stralsund

1. Sweden recognizes New Prussia as the true government of the Holy Roman Empire.

2. All lands gained by Sweden from the Holy Roman Empire through this war will be returned to its true owners, New Prussia, upon the conclusion of the war.

3. The city of Stralsund will be given over to the New Prussian government to fully complete the Prussian lands upon the conclusion of the war.

4. A full alliance will be formed between New Prussia and Sweden as a symbol of our brotherhood for liberty, and freedom upon the signing of this treaty.

5. Sweden will provide economic aid, as much as it is able, to repair the Holy Roman Empire from all products of this War for Independance.

Signed by Charles the XV, King of Sweden

To Sweden, from Dalnorossia

If such events come to pass, we will withdraw all our comments impunging Swedens intent, whilst retaining our opinion that this meddling in other nations civil wars is not a wise course of action.

Perhaps, with this new spirit of freedom you seem to possess, you could loosen your control over the Russians of Novgorad and the surrounding regions?

To Dalnorossia
From Sweden

While do not wish for them to leave our nation, we are indeed loosening our control over their part of the country, and are going to enact several local legislatures in all the regions of the Swedish Empire so as to better serve our people.

Unfourtnatley Tsar Alexius is in the process of purging the nobility thus we have a distinct lack of royal family.

OOC: Just so you know, all of this was researched for two weeks until I found what I wanted. All numbers are accurate as far as they were in real life.

Overview of the Federated Kingdoms

polks.gif

Europe

United Kingdom of Great Britain

The United Kingdom was the basis for the foundation of the Federated Kingdoms. The island is very densely populated and is home ow, rolling countryside in the east and south, while hills and mountains predominate in the western and northern regions.

The United Kingdom, a leading trading power and financial centre, has an essentially capitalist economy. Agriculture is intensive, and efficient by European standards, producing much of the needed food while employing only a small percentage of labor. The UK has large coal, and iron reserves.

Services, particularly banking and business services, account for much of the economy. Industry continues to grow in importance, and the UK is still the largest manufacturer of armaments in the Federated Kingdoms.

The population of United Kingdom is 18,776,300 people, or 7.6% if the total population of the Federated Kingdoms.

Politically only two large parties exist in the UK - The Conservatives and the Liberals. The Conservatives favor state intervention in the economy as well as protective tarriffs and are generally more pro-war than the liberals. The Liberals, on the other hand, favor even deeper state intervention in the economy that the conservatives do, but unlike them support the idea of free trade. Currently the Conservatives are in power with 57% of the votes.

Netherlands

The Netherlands is one of the most densely populated and geographically low-lying countries in the world (its name literally means "low country") and is popularly known for its windmills, wooden shoes, dykes, tulips, bicycles and social tolerance. A remarkable aspect of the Netherlands is the flatness of the country. About half of its surface area is less than 1 m above sea level, and large parts of it are actually below sea level. The country is divided into two main parts by three rivers Rhine (Rijn), Waal, and Meuse (Maas). The south-western part of the Netherlands is actually one big river delta of these rivers. These rivers not only function as a natural barrier, but also as a cultural divide, as is evident in the different dialects spoken north and south of these great rivers and the (previous) religious dominance of Catholics in the south and Calvinists in the north.

The Netherlands has a prosperous and open economy. Industrial activity is predominantly in food-processing and machinery. A highly productive agricultural sector provides large surpluses for the food-processing industry and for exports. Other important parts of the economy are international trade, banking and transport.

The Netherlands is home to 3,358,000 people or just under 1.4% of the total FK population.

In politics the Conservatieven party that favor interventionism and protectionism is a little bit behind the Liberale Partij which favors Laissez Faire and Free Market policies. A small Roman Catholic liberal party also exists as well as a reactionary Anti-Revolutionaire Parti.

Denmark

Denmark consists of the peninsula of Jutland (Jylland) and 405 named islands. Of these, 323 are habited, with the largest being Zealand (Sjælland) and Funen (Fyn). The island of Bornholm is located somewhat east of the rest of the country, in the Baltic Sea. The country is mostly flat with little elevation; the highest natural point is Møllehøj, at 170.86 metres. The climate is temperate, with mild winters and cool summers. Main cities are the capital Copenhagen (on Zealand), Aarhus, Aalborg (on Jutland) and Odense (on Fyn).

The economy is based mostly on industry in the main cities and agriculture outside of them. There is a developed banking industry.

Population is 2,268,000, only 0.9% of the total population of the Federated Kingdoms.

Venstre and the National-Liberale parties share the liberal spectrum, and the majority of the votes. They are both Laissez-Faire and Free-Trade oriented, disagreing only on the issues of military. They are opposed by the Højre, the local conservative party that advocates intervention and protectionism.

Norway

The landscape is generally rugged and mountainous, topped by glaciers, and its coastline of over 83,000 km punctuated by steep-sloped inlets known as fjords, as well as a multitude of islands and islets. The Northern part of the country is also known as the Land of the Midnight Sun because of its northern location, north of the Arctic Circle, where for part of each summer the sun does not set, and in winter much of its land remains dark for long periods. The southern part is not known for this, however in summertime, the sun is only away for a few hours.

The country is richly endowed with natural resources - fish, forests, and minerals, and coal. The small villages on the coasts focus on production and extraction of these resources and their sale to the rest of the Federated Kingdoms. Industry is small and confined to the major cities.

The population is a mere 1,608,000 or 0.66% of the Federated Kingdom's.

Politically Norway is split between the conservative Embedsmennene advocating Free Trade and Laissez Faire economics and a more liberal Bondevennene which opts for state intervention and protectionism. The liberals have a solid majority in the local parliament.

Ireland

A ring of coastal mountains surrounds low central plains. The island is bisected by the River Shannon, at 161 miles (259 km) the longest river in Ireland. The island's lush vegetation, a product of its mild climate and frequent but soft rainfall, earns it the sobriquet "Emerald Isle".

Ireland has only recently won its recognition as an independant entity within the Federated Kingoms, being previously part of the United Kingdom. Its economy is mostly agrarian, although there are some industries in Belfast.

The population of the island is 4,321,000, equaling 1.8% of the Federated Kingdoms' population.

The Irish National Party has taken a majority since seperation. This liberal party advocates for intervention and free trade and has joined forces with the Liberal party which advocates even stronger intervention. The opposition comes from the Unionist party of British loyalists who wish to re-join with the UK and advocate Laissez Faire and Free Trade, but only hold 12% of the votes.

Furthermore das, how did France's military training drop? It was at brilliant when I last left it?

I decided not to let Kal'thazar's money go to COMPLETE waste and instead of raising a horde of irregulars, raised a horde of regulars. Training dropped accordingly...

You sure you want a king from THAT dynasty?! Because with all due respect, one was an aging lazy hedonist with disregard for his own people, and his son is a juvenile sadist. ;)

there is a possibility of personal union in the event of sudden death.

You do know that, unless you happen to dominate the Europe at the time (or think you can fight off your neighbours somehow anyway), your relatives sent to rule in other countries are supposed to renounce all claims to their original land?

Because there'd be way too many personal unions otherwise...

Frustrating, but very much in character

Because its in character for great powers to act rather frustratingly. Am enjoying the diplomatic exchanges, myself - certainly does much for the NES atmosphere.
