NESCOM: Earth's Only Hope
There are two possibilities that exist: Either we are alone in the universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying - Arthur C. Clarke
Story: The world is in danger as aliens have arrived among us. They have begun abducting people from cities around the globe and in desperation the world's powerful governments have turned to a shadowy organization known as NESCOM. It is hoped that NESCOM will investigate these rumors of aliens and bring the threat to a close, defeating the invaders at their own games of new warfare.
Introduction: While I take stock and figure out what I want to do with Capto Iugulum and so forth, I decided a pleasant way to kill time would to be to try out the fantastic idea that Daftpanzer once presented and use the newly released version of XCOM to play a fun game with various house rules and the involvement of the NES community. I plan do a update each time a mission is completed or some other important event takes place, in order to give you an idea of what is going on. For those unfamiliar with XCOM, it is a turn based tactical strategy game involving defending the Earth from an alien invasion with unknown intent or origin. The game allows for the customization and creation of various characters and units to use on the battlefield, and combines this with very good graphics and a series of wonderfully designed maps.
Objective: To save the world from alien conquest or invasion. The game itself is not scripted, beyond a few key events, which are still fairly well manipulated as those things go, but it's based on the decisions made in game. I currently plan on keeping this updated as long as I am playing the game and people are involved. I will be keeping track of all characters and operations launched throughout the course of the game. When a character's dead, it be dead. I'm just hoping to inspire a few good stories from you all and
House Rules: As I just recently beat the game on Classic Difficulty, I'm bringing it down to Normal to accommodate the various house rules I'm adding. I'm leaving it up to any of you to define the personalities of the various characters you adopt. I therefore will play with the personality you assign in mind, and make decisions based on what that character would or would not do, not based on my overall perspective. I feel this should make the game a bit more challenging and interesting. I expect many deaths. I have also added the Ironman mode, so I will be unable to return to any saves, so all deaths are permadeath. Furthermore, I will not recruit new rookies myself, and will only take new ones when they are either mission rewards, or when a new NESer wants to sponsor a rookie, but there are none left free. Also, I will do my best to involve all of you whenever possible, and rotate characters between missions as much as feasibly possible so that all NESer sponsored rookies get some action.
What Y'all Do: In this NES, I'm not really looking for much except for some good stories and fun to be had by all. There's no grand scheme or orders to be put in. Players just can choose to sponsor various rookies (a list provided below). I will rename the rookie as you choose and carry on in the manner in game you have outlined for your character's personality. All you need do is fill out the template, and then you can never post again or comment on everything, up to you, as your character will be in the game from the moment you join in. Check out the list of current rookies below and fill out the following template:
Template
Rookie's Current Name: The name currently created for the rookie, you cannot pick one another NESer has already named.
New Name: The name you wish to use for the rookie.
Personality: Describe the personality of your character, and I will attempt to play as such in the process of the game. As a side note, the actual abilities of a character aren't created by the game until they hit the rank of squadie. You may therefore want to be a little careful, as it'd suck if you described yourself as a sniper and the game wound up making you an assault trooper.
Background: Describe the background of your character, unfortunately I cannot select the nationality of the character, and it will be imprinted in all screenshots and whatnot, so you'll be stuck with the nationality too. Apologies on that, but beyond that, go wild.
Appearance: I can make your character look pretty much however you'd like, though the game's engine means mostly just their hair cut and color. So work with that.

Sponsored Characters
Spoiler :
MoreEpic ThanYou
Status: Wounded, 8 Days Recovery
Rank: Sergeant
Gender: Male
Nationality: American
Class: Sniper
Missions: 4
Kills: 6
Personality: The most badass sniper in XCOM, MoreEpicThanYou kills with finesse with his trusty sniper rifle. He isn't that good at close combat, though.
Background: MoreEpicThanYou grew up in a stereotypical American suburb, and played basketball at high school and military academy. He's great with women.
Martha Azikiwe (Milarqui)
Rank: Corporal
Gender: Female
Nationality: Nigerian
Class: Assault
Missions: 4
Kills: 3
Personality: Hot-blooded, total hatred of the aliens, social and team-worker.
Background: a relative of Nnamdi Azikiwe, Nigeria's first President, Martha chose to join the Nigerian Army. Her time there was marked by the Second Nigerian Civil War (2014-16), which started when the Boko Haram jihadists attacked the Nigerian government and tried to take over the country. Martha played an important role in several of the battles, and was present when the leaders of Boko Haram were finally arrested and then executed after the end of the war. When the aliens arrived, they abducted her sister, thus creating in her an irrational hatred of the aliens: thus, it was no surprise that she joined NESCOM almost the moment it was created.
Cornelius Leonsmerle (Lord of Elves)
Rank: Corporal
Gender: Male
Nationality: American
Class: Support
Missions: 3
Kills: 1
Personality: Arrogant and sarcastic ratbastard, highly capable
Background: He likes to shoot stuff with guns, which is basically his entire motivation for being part of XCOM. He bought his way in with his vast reserves of diamond blood money.
Lord Iggy
Rank: Corporal
Gender: Male
Nationality: South African
Class: Support
Missions: 2
Kills: 4
Personality: Iggy has proven to be a moderately capable soldier, his perhaps lackluster talents compensated by his overpowering obsession with learning about the aliens- so that he can learn how to best destroy them. Iggy's quite capable of flipping between casual, socially acceptable behaviour and manic, giddy, and excessively violent anti-alien rampages.
Background: Obsessed with aliens throughout his childhood, Iggy's fascination turned to terror and fury when much of his hometown was devastated by extraterrestrial forces. After being picked out of the ruins by XCOM, Iggy set out to dedicate his life towards the defeat of the aliens.
Karl Bauer (Grandkhan)
Rank: Corporal
Gender: Male
Nationality: German
Class: Heavy
Missions: 2
Kills: 4
Personality: Karl hates everything. Literally. If it exists, he does not like it. Teammates? Hate. Aliens? Hate. Boxes? Hate. He expresses his loathing with sarcasm and condecension towards everything and everyone.
Background: Karl was expelled from the German military shortly after joining, having cited him an 'unacceptable psychological risk.' To further his murderlust, the man then bought a gun with his own money and set himself up as a 'troubleshooter for hire' for various small African and European nations. Karl joined the XCOM task force at the tender age of 19, selected due to his impressive service record during his service as a mercenary in the Greek Civil War of 2014-2016. Karl was quick to sign up, saying "Sure. **** aliens."
John MacScotty (SamSniped)
Rank: Squaddie
Gender: Male
Nationality: Scottish
Class: Heavy
Missions: 2
Kills: 3
Personality: Cold, ruthless, calculating, and quiet, MacScotty seems to never follow orders. Despite this, he always succeeds, usually with liberally applied firepower. No such thing as a waste of NESCOM resources.
Background: Little is known of him. He came out of the back country in Scotland, and quickly rose through the ranks of the SAS. Almost all files on him seem to be covered in red and black tape, but Russia and the name Zakahev pop up frequently. After this blacked out period, he joined NESCOM, and has been in related missions ever since.
Sarah Isra (Lighthearter)
Rank: Squaddie
Gender: Female
Nationality: Egyptian
Class: Support
Missions: 2
Kills: 4
Personality: Medic/suppression soldier, cautious about staying in cover. Not inclined to get in combat personally, likes taking captives though.
Background: Daughter of a native British couple that moved to Egypt to teach, Sarah went into the Egyptian Army early in life and now finds herself part of XCom.
