Network Adapter Not Working

Network Adapter on desktop isn't working, and this is not due to the adapter itself, since I tried 2 different adapters, and same problem persisted.
The computer recongized the adapter properly, and said it is working. If I plug in the network cable, the lights do flash in the back of the card, signaling there is reception. However, it just doesn't connect to the internet. I can see that it doesn't detect any 'default gateway'. Anyone care to shed some light on this?

do you use WinXP?

you could check whether you PC is configured to keep a static IP-Address. This will stop him from requesting a IP from your ISP. I'd check your Network-Settings wheter DHCP is enabled:

I don't know the exact wording in english but you do that by right-clicking on network envirionment on your desktop. Pick "Properties". Then right-click again on your network-adapter and select Properties again. From the list here select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and (yes, you guessed it) select Properties again :)

Here you should check if dynamically assign IP-Adress (or something like that) is selected and not manual.

Are you connecting through a router? If so you'll need to set the router's IP as the default gateway.

If you don't get a gateway, you probably receive the windows autoconfiguration IP-address (which means you can't get online). It also means your PC isn't connecting to any router.

My ISP's standard troubleshoot:

Check whether your modem is online.
Check your computername if applicable ( the ISP I work for assigns IP-addresses on the basis of the computer name)
Reinstall the network adapter (not necessary in this case because you used two different ones).

IF these two won't work, try doing a system restore or uninstall your firewall.

OR just call your ISP, it's possible that their server which doles out the IP-adresses is having troubles.

but the same connection works well on my laptop. It only doesn't work on the desktop.

In that case, there's probably something wrong with your desktop settings.
Try restoring your system to an earlier date (start - programs - accessories - system tools - system restore ).

Or close or uninstall your firewall if you use a different one on your desktop than on your laptop.

I just recently reinstalled windows xp, (prior to this, I was using windows 2000), but the network adapter still doesn't work under the freshly installed xp. What is wrong with this????

if it fine on router side, you would get valid IP address

please give us ipconfig /all output (start, run, cmd <enter>, ipconfig /all)
