Does anyone know where I can find longer lists of cities for the cities.txt file? I'm not a big fan of having 7 Cannae's or Capua's while playing. Any help is greatly appreciated.

yesc that is annoying as identically named cities don't show up when you scroll thru....like 3 Paris' and you only will see one if do a "city scroll thru"

1.manually rename when you see duplications...doesn't take too long to recognize. You can see in game what cities have been duplicated by using the "find city" menu.

2.go into your city.txt and manually add some yourself.Or change existing ones.
You can also change civs, leaders names,attributes,titles..a bunch of stuff.

<IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/Smash/citytxt.gif" border=0>

This what the German city list looks like.I can simply add cities between Brandenburg and @STOP

Best make a back up copy of originals 1st.

You can also name your cities manually when you create them, or rename them anytime later on.

Personally, in mid/late game as literally dozens or even hundreds of freight start being produced by my cities, I rename most cities in the empire in order to quickly ascertain the region and/or continent the city is located on. A quick glance, hit the L key, and scroll the first letter of the destination group, and bang... you're done with the freight delivery (unless enemy fighters are within 10 squares of your airlift route).

For instance, 20 cities on a northern continent might be renamed to N01 thru N20. 15 former Roman cities might be renamed R01 thru R15. 23 African cities might be called F01 thru F23... etc.

When scrolling thru advisors, or looking at trade, or airlifting (this is the big timesaver!)... you can find the desired city quickly and without duplication or ambigity. With "normal" city names, the time loss is enormous when you have huge armies, hordes of engineers, and/or hundreds of freight.

BTW, a naming convention is probably most handy if you routinely run about 100 or more cities, or don't have a photographic memory (like I don't). But if you have 7 Cannaes, then you must have a big empire, so maybe this might help.

Here's my expanded city.txt. Feel free to copy it if you like:

(BTW I don't know why they have Arab and Inca names included here, these Civs aren't accessible (as far as I know, anyone?).)

I put Singapore in the Chinese section because a) it has a predominantly Chinese population, and b) I like Singapore (it's a pearl of Asia), and wanted to possibly see it grow big in the game (when the AI gets down to extra cities, they never grow that big...).

Otherwise, I took cities in and around the modern countries that took the place of the ancient civs....

P.S. line from a recent game I played: "Hiroshima builds Manhattan Project." At the very end, of course....

The Incas and Arabs can be substituted in place of an existing civ.The changes that need to be done are in the rules.txt.You'll find Atawalpa and Saladin. You switch these with existing leaders positions.Do the same with tribes. You can make up your own as well....like Pierre Trudeau of the Canadians
wink.gif
...then make the changes to the city.txt for whichever civ you switching.I don't think anything needs be done to Inca and Arab cities list....you'll know when you found your 1st.
Copy It first
Why are there?
Maybe at one time it was going have more civs?
Maybe they just wanted to give some material for customizing?

who knows...

Allan, you've got Cornwall down as a city for the English!
lol.gif

Basically, anyone with an atlas can fill in loads of extra cities - easily up to the max for all the civs that survive - and the Zulus can get Johannesburg, Egyptians Tripoli, etc so the difficult ones are really the Carthaginians and Sioux who don't have any surviving and whose sphere of influence is taken over by cities of other civs. The Mongols would start to take modern Russian cities but they can help themselves to Pakistani and Afghan cities. With a bit of research then you can easily extend these lists to the max for all the civs but the two above, in which case you'll need a bit of imagination.
What about Saarbrucken for your German list too? That was the city that my German text book was set in when I was at school

I used to run a few customized Civ II .TXT files, but have reverted back to the original Civ II files for now. So while we're on the topic of custom lists, here is the city list for a custom tribe that I once played quite a bit, LOL (I'm from city #6)

Thanks for the help guys. I know all about the two civs that werent included. Does anyone know why they werent included?

Also, I know about editing the rules.txt file. Ive had Civ since about 1996 id say. Ive figured out everything to do, but I just wanted an updated list. Thanks for that Allan.

"Allan, you've got Cornwall down as a city for the English!"

I guess it's not so much a "city" as a "region" (like "Ganges" and "Indus" are rivers on the Indian subcontinent, not cities!). I actually don't have an atlas, I've just visited a lot of places and I'm sort of a geography nerd anyway.... I haven't visited England ever, so I had a hard time coming up with a good list there (and the English AI tends to expand more than most, so some help with a list would be nice...)--just memory, or places I've heard of.... I DID replace Richmond with something since the Americans also use Richmond, and as far as I know the US Richmond (Virginia)is the larger city.... But I lived in Japan for three years, and have travelled through India, China, Southeast Asia, Mexico, and Central America, so I have a lot of familiarity with those places.... Never been anywhere in Europe though, but I have memorized some cities there--especially Scandinavia, where I once planned a trip that never happened.... A globe I have helped out in some cases too.

As for the Sioux, I make up names as I go along when I play them, names that fit the landscape around the city (like "Buffalo Gap", "Pine Ridge" (although that IS a real place in South Dakota), "Two Fish Bay", "Birch Lake", etc.)--just like the Sioux would have named them. And the Babs I didn't bother with because they never EVER get past their list when the AI plays them (although they've come close sometimes)....

I mainly did this to keep the AI from founding "Naples" and "Crete" and whatnot....

Allan, u lousy mustard! You just made obsolote 1½ hours of sleepy, crappy work!

Starlifter: I once thought of creating a "Minnesotan" civ (because like your home state, my home state is a bit different from the rest of the US too). But it sounded strange so I didn't. Maybe I will now....

Of course, in your case, Texas WAS actually a nation of its own once (albeit very briefly)....

Sorry, Juize--but I probably didn't do all that good on Europe (except your area, where I once made a detailed plan for a trip which fell through)

"<-- THIS COUNTRY IS ON AMNESTYS DARK LIST OF HUMAN RIGHTS!"

Finland? What did they ever do to anybody? I know some police departments in the US are followed pretty closely by Amnesty, though. Haven't kept in touch with them in awhile, I used to donate money to them now and then--they're a good, ideologically-neutral organization designed to uncover man's abuse of fellow man, and I respect them a lot.... So what put Finland on their radar screen? I always thought Scandinavia was one of the most civilized places on earth (even though I don't agree with socialism in principle)....

It is actually not SO serious... Everyone who declines to be in army is being punished
in prison. This is not so shocking that the goverment is not paying ANY attention to it.
We've been hanging around there since '86, but nobody cares... I do care.
Hmmm, now when I checked your 'viking' section, I noticed that there are some
finnish cities. Finland is nowadays not controlled by vikings, so old names of cities
are replaced by finno-ugrician ones.
Here are some original (swedish) names of cities:

Vaasa : Wasa
Helsinki : Helsingfors
Turku : Åbo
Oulu : Uleåborg
Tampere : Tammerfors
Rovaniemi was founded actually founded when finland was independent so...

Wasa is also a city in Finland, but maybe different spelling.

And the Wasa is a very cool Swedish sailing warship, made by a Dutch master about 500 years ago. It was lost (it sunk) on it's maiden voyage out of Stockholm harbor when a little breeze began to blow, and the brand new ship slowly heeled over in front of everyone who came out to watch... and it down it went into about 20 or 30 feet of water.

In the late 1950's or 60's, it was discovered in the mud of Stockholm harbor... perfectly preserved, including all the ship's stores. It took 40 years to painstakingtly salvage/restore/refloat/preserve/display it, but it now resides in all its original glory in a custom museum in Stockholm! I actually got to walk it's decks once when they were restoring it. It is so perfectly preserved.

OK, I guess that was a little off topic, but if you all ever get to Stockholm, be sure to see the Wasa
wink.gif
.

I think perhaps I will visit the Wasa, as next summer I plan on doing the whole Europe thing. I myself would definitely recommend that next time you are in New York City, you take a look at the Intrepid. That was one hell of a boat.
