I just hears a report on the news about an AOL person who was fired for selling 92,000,000 screennames. I presume he was only fired once the press found out .

ICQ used to be famous for random adverts where there were set replies regardless of what you sent...

That's SPIM, and yes, it's on the increase. That's why my main chat is locked out to people on my buddy list.

That's pretty old. It's known as spim. More annoying than spam because you often can't block it. I used to get those all the time a few years ago. "Hot 18/f/CA chicks that did stuff with their friends" often IM'd me. If they were hosted on Tripod, I took the liberty of reporting it to Tripod and shutting them down. :-/

Haven't gotten a lot of spim lately... used to get it at least once a day. I figure it's been a few months.

Good thing I don't use AIM. :D
It's on everything. Anita Hamiliton was getting them on Yahoo. What would stop spimmers from spreading to MSN or ICQ? IRC is already infected with those adverts...bots that message you and then disappear.

On MSN you have to know someone's specific email address to add them to your list and they have to confirm that they want to add you so its not as easy to spam someone like it is/was on ICQ...

Can some moderator change this topic name? It took me five minutes to understand what this was about...I thought this was some sort of joke. Something like "New from spam!"

SPIM, haha nice name. It's been around for years, and can get very annoying. It's one of the reasosn I gave up ICQ (not really though; I gave up ICQ mainly because they kept adding useless features and ads).
