hmm, never heard about a battle in holland, so don`t know...
But the dutch had indeed an army before - spanish "vassalship" ended already at the end of the 16th century (and definitive with the peace of Munster 1648). Don`t forget that the dutch fought during the whole 17th and early 18th century for years for securing the Balance of Power in Europe (especially against france, sometimes also england). Obviously the strongest dutch weapon was the fleet though. In the 2nd hald of the 18th century not much was left of the greatness of dutch military (which was by 1600 the modernst and qualitatively best in europe) and after that the netherlands made part of greater france of Nappy so a regular army was perhaps a bit absent in those days.

The battle of Bergen, there was not much fighting but it was a great story...

CORRECTION :
forget the last post.

It is the 2nd battle of Bergen op Zoom also known as the Batlle of Alkmaar.

hmm, I wonder how they could have fought one battle that was both in Bergen op Zoom and Alkmaar considering the fact that those places are about 150 kilometers far from eachother ;)

Since you can't decide who is supposed to ask now, I will pose a question to break the stalemate...

What was the name of the commander who was accused of vandalism on Hermes statues, and subsequently defected to the other side of the war?

I'd like to know the name of him, a little info on his habits and behaviour, something about his loyalty, and the name of the war...

Bring it on! :goodjob:

Alcibiaties (of Athenae), he was a very popular man in Athens, especially under the women. It was said he had cut off certain extensions of the statue. He defected to Sparta in a Pelops. war

Yeah, it was probably too easy.
But the funny thing is that he was known for his wild parties and not for his sometimes catastrophic warfare.
And he advocated the helping expedition to Segesta on Sicily, but defected to Sparta and helped Sparta defeating the Athenian expedition. He then again defected to Athens when the navy asked for his help against the government which had recently made a coup.

ah, easy one for you, i`m benevolent today :D
q: The son of the last stadhouder of the Dutch Republic became king of the United Dutch kingdom in 1815 and he took the name Willem I. What would have been his name (or better number) if he had been a stadhouder in the republic? (in other words: which Willem would he have been if they kept on counting from the republican rulers)

damnit i thought that was a good guess shudnt this thread now be called the dutch history thread for Kasperus and willemvanoranje
