i just bought a new/old laptop for use when on the road and elsewhere away from my comp but the problem is that its pretty old. Now i dont expect to be playing civ on it but is there anything that i can do to highthen its performance?
It is a dell latitude c600, running p3 at ~690mhz, with 512 mb ram and ATI mobility 128 AGP 2x. Now i dont expect to b e replacing any componens, i just want to know if there is anything to make it a little faster. And it runs win xp pro just if you want to know.

Run Windows XP in classic look (all fancy graphic stuff turned off, interface in 98/2000 style).
Perhaps a reformat will be nice to remove any stuff clogging up your system. Or just a simple defrag.

The hd itself is new so no way defrag will really help. I tried classic look and the windows xp look and it looks better and works faster in the win xp look so ill leve it at that. Im gonna open it up today to see if the video card cant be replaced a little.

XP lite
.

Video card is probably embedded in the motherboard and can't be replaced. :(

Check the performance Advanced Settings in XP (Start - Settings - Control Panel - System - Advanced tab, Performance Settings button) and select "adjust for best performance".

Okay, I opened up the back panel on the laptop and saw this:
2 ram sticks, some wires and what looked like an open slot for something. The backing of the slot was silver and there were wires sticking out of the slot wall. I was wondering, what would be the use of this slot. If i can post a pic I will.
