New terrain features

@Dancing Hoskuld

1. Here is is California Pam icon/button for the SAPHO.

2. Please don't use the "red corn" for the "Martian Red Weed". I personally think the "red wheat" looks better as "Martian Red Weed".

3. Ok we can skip the sword grass. Plus it looks too much like the seaweed/kelp anywho.

4. Just use SO's Papyrus and use it as a forest for the Marsh terrain instead of the flood plains. This way the Marsh would have 2 type of terrain features; the Papyrus or the Swamp.

5. I think i found something for the coral reef. However its a unit. Can unit graphics be converted into terrain features?

1. Thanks. Edit I change my mind on that;) the file was a jpg not a dds!

3. They all use the wheat base anyway.

5. Yes indeed.

1. Doh! WinRARed the wrong file. Oops! Here is the DDS.

5. Then go an try to grab the "Spore Launcher" from the "Planetfall" mod. It needs to be shrunk a bit in size but the model looks just like a sea sponge. Should work well as a coral reef.

@Dancing Hoskuld

Ok so i figured out how to re-texture the weird alien corn. This should do for bamboo. I have no idea how to add to to the game so I will leave that up to you. Also attached is a screenshot and I provided a new icon/button in the WinRAR too.

Please try to add it as a new type of forest.

I apologize if it looks kind of funny but its my first civ4 graphic and had to edit it in MSPaint since it would not work in Photoshop (go figure).

In the C2C Perfect World map script for marsh terrain I am thinking
  • polar regions 75% marsh has peat bog feature
  • cool temperate 25% peat bog, 40% sword grass representing the tall grasses you make thatch from eg Fens in the UK
  • warm temperate 25% sword grass, 40% swamp
  • tropical 50% swamp and 15% papyrus

All this modified with "mangrove swamp" for coastal swamps. If I can get the graphic - I was thinking the ground water one from DuneWars as a place holder
  • Polar and cool temperate - no chance
  • Warm temperate 50%
  • Tropical 90%

Sound good? Or I could just make a post map script so these features are added in after any map script is run.

@Dancing Hoskuld

Those sound great! :D

What about my bamboo forest I posted above? Can it be added too? Not sure where to have it since there are many type of bamboo which range from the tropics all the way to the Himalayan mountains.

This is what it looks like in game so far.

The bamboo looks good. But while you are tinkering with it could you ensure it behaves like normal forest? And by that I mean it gets reduced by roads so the roads are visible, and it gets reduced by good huts and resources so they are visible. And once you get that worked out could you fix the evergreen (tall pointy trees) forests so they work right again? They are currently broken and have been for a couple versions. It makes it very hard to see what is on a tile.

Others and I have reported that problem elsewhere. I can't see what is going wrong or where the differences are.

I can't remember exactly which version they changed in, but there was a version change, the trees looked a bit different, and they no longer worked correctly.

The volcano is not working see here

What about this? Have it generate on flat terrain and then link the eruption event to the new terrain feature rather than peaks?

----

I am not sure what you have set for the rules of animal spawning but if you get the bamboo to work could Pandas spawn only in bamboo forests?

@Dancing Hoskuld

I figured out how to edit the alpha channel so here is an update of the bamboo texture. I also tried to make the colors better. Its less bright as before. But the leaves now look more bamboo-like and less corn-like. See attachment. Just replace the existing DDS with this one in the files I gave you before.

I have update the new terrain features. They will not appear on any maps yet because I am still writing the post map script. Currently it appears to be adding too many coconut trees. ;)

Please check out the pedia and tell me if there are things you think wrong in there. Bonuses provided, improvements allowed, text - you know all the details.

Main new feature is savanna from Pie_at and a reintroduction of the old swamp as a peat bog.

I was not able to get coral, papyrus, mangrove or salt bush working but I was having a bad day yesterday so hopefully when I look at it again it will be simple.

Edit: Should kelp, reef or goody islands appear in lakes? How often and where should fossils, crater, tar pits and rock formations appear. Now is your chance to provide input. :)

I willgo and update my SVN and take a look. Man you are doing a lot of different projects at once. I am feeling slow compared to how much you are getting done.

What do you mean by salt bush? Did you mean the salt flats terrain from Dune Wars? Because i would really like to get some new terrain types put in too, not just terrain features.

I have not heard of fresh water kelp, however i have heard of freshwater seaweed. So maybe. As for the reef I would say no to them in lakes. And for goodie huts defiantly not. On a side note its too bad the goodie huts are so huge looking. We should find a better graphic or something. In short i will say no to kelp, reef or goody islands in lakes.

New terrain types would break map scripts even more. :(

I can change the size of the goody islands, I think. This graphic is better than the original.

@Dancing Hoskuld

Ok some things I think should be changed.

1. Bamboo should not give unhealthy nor healthy. It also should give +50% defense and cost 2 movement.

2. Barrel Cactus should give +1 commerce while the Prickly Pear should give +1 food. You have them swapped.

-----

Yeah maybe reduce the goody island a little so they don't touch the mainland.

EDIT: Also the button/icon for the Coconut Palms should be given to the Dates. I will make you a new coconut icon/button.

EDIT2: Here you go. (See attachment).

No I mean the plant and variants. Lots of it over here in the semi arid regions.

OK, I should be posting the new post map script soonish. It will work for all maps so we can get rid of C2C_PerfectWorld and go back to the original.

1. Oh ok. Basically a scrubland type flora. We have lots of Chaparral type of plants here in California and I know you must have a bunch too in Australia.

2. Good good!

3. As for new terrains I was wondering if my experience in map making could help. You see my other project, Sagan 4 involves making an alien ecosystem. Thus I must make planetary maps by hand all the time. Over the course of the project (today is the 5th anniversary) I have learned how to make much more realistic types of maps based on plate tectonics, sea currents and climate models.

Here is one of the most recent maps. As you can see based on the sea currents deserts end up mostly on the western side of the landmasses and roughly the same latitude just like on Earth. Note that on Earth most deserts end up at 30 degrees.

Another feature I have is river deltas where wetland end up at the end of rivers as they reach the ocean. This would be more of an estuary habitat that I wish would show up more on Civ4 maps.

As you can see from my key I have 6 perspiration types and 4 temperate types for land biomes.

Precipitation Types
- Wetlands
- Rainforest
- Woodlands
- Scrublands
- Grasslands
- Deserts

Temperature Types
- Tropical
- Temperate
- Polar
- Mountain

While not as complex as say the Köppen climate classification system it has done its job for my project.

If we can come up with random maps as good as Perfect World with the extra terrain features that would be good. The terrain mod has 3 types of hot desert. 2 savannas. Polar, Tundra and Taiga; 2 types of Steppe and so on. the original has gone but I can uploaded it on FileFront it if you are interested.
