Do you play multiplayer? I used to play it all the time then started stopping. Is it the same people as its been for the last couple years? I played one more game a while back and recognized some of them.

Sorry, but I haven't played multiplayer in Civ 3 for years. I'm also always a little scared to play online in old games because the people who are still playing them tend to be the fanatics that know the game inside out x10. It can be a real nightmare, as well as boring for your opponents who steamroll right over you in their sleep.
I've only ever played MP in LANs with real-life friends, and we never got very far (never past the ancient age).
I did play some Civ4 multiplayer (almost all prior to joining CFC), but by and large didn't see the point of it. Trying to fit a whole Civ game into one session is pointless, and it seemed like that was what multiplayer mostly was. I don't see why Civ3 would be much different.
I'd be curious to try PBEM at some point, but I am hesitant about what Lord Silverkey mentions. It seems like in both III and IV, all the PBEM games have the same players, so they'll obviously know most of the good strategies, and probably steamroll anyone new. I'd be willing to try it if a group could be assembled that wasn't all experts. Preferably either a standard epic game, or maybe a relatively short scenario like the WWII Conquest.

I've never played civ multiplayer (except for 2 SGs, briefly). I played Warcraft II multiplayer way back in the day (still have my Kali key around here somewhere I think). I briefly played in Case's Ladder which was a ranking system, so after a couple of games you wound up playing people roughly equivalent to yourself.
My style of civ play is not at all suited to simultaneous multiplayer as I usually over-analyze everything every turn, and I've flaked out on the only two SG's I tried to play. Heck I very rarely finish any of my single player games; I usually get an itch to start a new game sometime in the MA or early IA. I simply need to stay away from multiplayer civ.

That's too bad, it can be very rewarding if you manage to get further.
Sometime you should try playing it (I've only done LAN for this) on the smallest map size, with like 16 players (obviously a lot of them are AI) and the fastest game speed. Through quick research and tech trading you can progress fairly quickly through the game, and you have lots of fighting while conquering cities with culture becomes a lot more interesting. If this seems to crazy for you play it on archipelago so combat gets slowed down. I've gotten to the modern age in roughly 2 hours doing this. (but that may have had even more than 16 players)

I prefer SGs to MP. I like being part of a team that is trying to beat the AI, even when there are absurd restrictions on what we can and cannot do.
I feel sorta strange trying to beat up on humans, though.

Thanks! It seemed like just a perfect opportunity to make a video with. Hopefully I can have another cool idea soon to something other than playing a game.
Most of the Civ3 multiplayer were games played from the mods at CivPlayers. They were not more than a hundred turns. IIRC Future, where you start the game with everything discovered and edited units, and Ancient, with no UU's and more unit editing and stuff were the most commonly played. I heard about gamespy shutting down though, so I'm not sure how that will affect mp since games were organized with Gamespy Arcade.

Never played civ4 or civ5. I like ptw and conquest but i dont like some units like guerrilla. we can start modern age when we start playing but i want to play only medieval or first age but i dont know how i can. and big problem is i won space race many times but i never send spaceship to the space 
i completed all spaceship parts, when i press the button (for space screen) it doesnt work.

Don't like the thought of Civ3 being played over LAN, except for Counter Strike and those kind of games. I honestly miss the isometric angle of the world view of CIV III, looks practical and all those sprites look matching with the surroundings. It seems a lot of thought went into making this game, CIV IIIGold Edition too is good, but has been bettered in small ways in CIV III Conquest.
CIV IV looks way to cartoonish, it doesn't feel like CIV III, sometimes, my PC slows for a fraction of sec after my turn is over, like some graphic rendering processes is taking place, like in some high end games requiring High Graphic card. Zooming out to see the whole earth is kind of OK, but the whole game (i mean the world maps) has been patched to look like a 3D game, which entirely kills the feel of the game, i mean how CIV should be ( like in CIV III Conquest ).It really feels nostalgic.
Did SID MEIER'S really make this CIV IV game,it doesn't look so.May be he was too ambitious with this project. CIV has seen the best of its days, till the release of CIV III Con, i don't want to bother by telling the video shown after a wonder is finished or a man's voice speaks the quoted line after a Research is completed, hope you understood if u played the game (CIV IV) , those are not important, what is important the isometric angle of the game and the look and feel not like 3D, should be more like in CIV III.
I don't think i will buy CIV V,VI,VII all those release (may be if i have some money to spare or just for the sake of buying ) will be more graphic driven or more 3D, this game is unique, even with all those sprites, it all feels good and perfect. It should not loose its originality and make it all cosmetic, Sid Meier's is a genius to come up a game like this, one in a million to even think, but i would only buy the next release if it feels more like CIV III.

I've been playing for about 10 years. I remember when I was in college how I loved waking up early on Sundays to play some, while listening to the local radio to the program "Ask the doctor" where they would invite different specialists who answered questions to the people who called. It was silly but it was the best thing to listen at that hour. Now I moved to a different city, but on Sundays I still get up early to play and I can listen to the same station online, so it feels like I'm 10 years back and my life was easier. The whole of it gives me a feeling that everything is fine

I am not as active in these forums as some people are but I am still out there playing civilization iii from time to time. Sometimes when I do show up to these forums I get lost in the knowledge of the expert players and find myself wasting what I thought would be a quick five minutes. I never really tried doing harder difficulties because I always had fun at regent but now it is just too easy so I moved up to monarch for my last game. I can say it is going well and I was dominating right from the start. I guess Emperor is in the near future but I can see this as a much more difficult challenge. This is definitely one of the harder games to master but something which I would consider an accomplish if you are able to.
I also got my brother to play and sometime we get some lan going with some computers and to say the least, its a blast!

Go into the CivIII folder, then Art/Movies. Inside the movies folder are three files. One is "security_briefing.bik". Another is "intro.bik". The third is, IIRC, "race.bik". Change the "race.bik" file to something else (I changed mine to "fake.sid"
). You won't get to watch the movie, but after the screen goes blank for a second or two it leads to the victory screen, duly informing you that the space win is yours. This is an old problem; don't know why it exists, but it's easy enough to get around.

The .bik file is the movie file which apparently ships corrupted. Any working .bik file could replace it, such as that secuirity briefing one.

So if you change the file to read, say, "flik.bik" would you get to see the movie? No biggie, just wondering.

I've been playing once a week with a friend in Hotseat mode for years now. I also play Internet games with my friends quite regularly. I haven't touched vanilla civ for years, we're playing a mod I've been working on for nearly 9 years now (2500+ units, religion-specific wonders, working armies, large AI invasions, etc.).
