One last question about flipping.

In despotism my own newbie method of getting quick culture is to include a few workers in the stack that attacks a city, capture the city, wait for resistance to end, add the workers and whip a temple. Whether this is good or bad I don't know, It's just what I do.

In monarchy I can't do that. I need gold. The short rushing method described by Lt. 'Killer' M. works and minimises the amount of Gold req'd. But is there anything you can do if you're short of money? I guess what I'm trying to ask is what is the statistically most advantageous condition for a newly captured city without improvements? How can I generate breathing space?

I expect that the answer is "tough luck" don't go to war when you're skint.
Here is a guide I wrote on how to keep newly captured cities from filpping:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44399

My main bit of advice about doing it in despotism is that you can't rush stuff as a solution to stop culture flips, it just doesn't work. The main point to remember is to starve the cities to size 1 (unless you have mountains of troops to spare), it is by far the safest and easiest and least painful way to take cities, and it avoids the problems of staining your reputation by razing them.

The first user created was a test id. ;) IIRC it was test-something...

TF had ID no 4 I think.

Of course, later he made a few changes and hid all the evidence... :)

I consider my wrist slapped.

I read the exploits section but misunderstood it. I thought dogpiling was not allowed but adding one or two workers to finish a build was allowed. Since short rushing workers is similar in effect to adding workers to rush, I will draw my distinction in future by considering where the workers originated. If they were built by the city then I will take it that I can join them back in if I like. But I will not add workers from another city in future.

You live and learn I guess.

Yes KD, if you put in numbers from 1 to 10 you get interesting results.

One of the most interesting is that DanQ (apolyton) is number 9, and he only ever made one post

Anarres:

Good thread. This is exactly what I was after. I haven't read it all yet but I will. (My boss has just asked my what the #@£% I was doing)

Thanks:goodjob:

@mad-bax:

If you have any specific flipping-related questions feel free to ask in the other thread and I will answer there.

The FAQ is the place to look for the flip-formula (it is a little complex, but well worth knowing the basics of).

What determines the speed of a game loading or the waiting between turns the most? I don't think it has to do with the hard drive because I can't hear it running, but on the other hand I wonder how it would work with hard drive.

the Ai moves a lot of units between turns. Turn off animations.

on loading: it again seems to be mostly the unis.

AFAIK, between turns the computer is just doing straight number crunching. There is the autosave feature, but that is minimal in respect to the computations going on.

You can see this directly by using more civs, for each one added there is almost an exponential increase in time taken. Map size is also a factor, but I think it is more linear with respect to time (so a map with 10,000 tiles takes about twice the time of a map with 5,000 tiles, providing they have the same # of civs).

How can you find the amount of cities you have? Is there an easier way to do it than count all the ciites in the city screen or count on the map?

@KD and Killer: The old forum link is a bit of a blur....

Something like: ***NoNick Break Your Security***

In between turns, yes, mostly depending on the number of civs and units.

On loading, I'm not sure about that... my system usually (almost always) takes a long break for 10 to 20 secs when the loading is up to 38%, sometimes another break at 71%. I have a Pentium II 850 MHz and 384 MB RAM.

I posted this as a new thread earlier, sorry:

Trying to find out the numbers next to government type in the lower left-hand corner of the main screen (i.e. Monarchy - 5.5.0) - what do they mean?

Thanks.

I guess you mean the 3.6.1 or something like that...

This means in this case:
- 30% taxes
- 60% science
- 10% luxury

(like in the F1 screen (domestic advisor))

I don't think I want to dish out $70 for Civ 3, but I wish they at least had a demo out...:(
