Hi

I got this game two days ago. The reason I bought this game is because I was going throught my old games and I found Civilization II. I thought HEY this game rocks. I then found this site (This SITE and FORUM are FANTASTIC!)

Anyways, I thought I'd buy civ3 since it was only $50 (I live in Australia)

It's a great game, I really havn't played civ in ages, probably not since i started highschool (I am now in grade 12). So yeah it's been a while.

Anyways, my questions.

How do you guys attack?
What I have been doing is getting a group of units and heading them towards a city and fortifing them outside a city until my other men come, then I attack. I don't think this is very good, please help

Does spacebar heal units like in Civ2?

What is the point of a worker making a hut?

I'm sure I'll have more questions later, but this willl do for now.

I have been on this site and playing Civ all day!

..............you'll probably get some more comprehensive answers but here's my 2 cents worth:

1. "How do you guys attack?" Sounds like you have the right idea. I try to keep the AI in the dark until I'm ready to attack, so I'll amass my forces in a place where the AI can't "see" them...........outside their zone of control, in a city, or on ships. I found that if you put them next to their city, the AI will start building defenders and take potshots at you with their attacking pieces.

2. "Does spacebar heal units like in Civ2?" (viz. skipping a turn) Yes, provided the units are not in the enemies territory. (viz. their zone of control). I think ships have to be in your city to repair (heal).

3. "What is the point of a worker making a hut?" I 'm not sure what you mean by this! If you mean building a fortress on a tile, the question is a GOOD one! I never build 'em............too defensive for me and I like to have my workers doing something more useful, like road/rr building, mining, clearing or irrigating.

Have fun down under...........our winter weather here is matching your summer weather!.....we hit a high of 90F yesterday :)

Ha, kool.

I don't know what 90F is in relation to degrees celcius (is the way we go temperature)

In summer here in Australia it is usually about 27-32 degrees.

To stay on forum topic....

What does gpt stand for? I see people use this term in their posts.

Also thanks for your help :)

Foreign Advisor screen (F4).

90F = approx 32C

Go to the War Academy on this site for some excellent strategy articles! :yeah:

The AI knows the entire map and all troop positions. A good idea is to amass troops as far back as possible - i.e. Knights 6 tiles from the border - provided you have roads to the border. Attacking cities with a cultural radius of 2 can be done with fast units y going for them vertical or horizonal as the control only covers 1 tile her. Move a stack of Knights to the tile next to it (so you are not in their territory), then next turn move them into their land and attack :)

Does spacebar heal units like in Civ2?

Yes. THey heal by 1 HP per turn if they do NOT move at all in that turn and are NOT in enemy lands. They heal faster in cities with Barracks. Ships need to go to a towns to heal. As with Barracks for land units, a harbour heals them in 1 turn.

What is the point of a worker making a hut?
Do you mean a mine? It makes the tile give more production!

And welcome to CFC and Civ3! :D

Clarification on the GreatWall:

beyond size 6 a city doesn't benefit at all from walls or the doubling effect of the Great Wall.

johndoe21, gpt stands for 'gold per turn' (how much gold you make or the ai makes per everyturn). It can vary, higher or lower, depending on lots of things (eg., whether you have commercial improvements in your city, if your civ is commerical, how many un-corrupted cities you have, Wall Street, etc.). You can also depend gpt from the ai in peace treaties or for other things. That will increase your gpt, but for only 20 turns (unless you break the peace with them.

That's exactly what I thought. :)

Ships can heal only in a city with a harbor.

Ive noticed foreign or caputured workers dont work as fast. Ive also noticed that sometimes after capturing a city and pumping out workers, somtimes they get produced as foreign with thier slow work ethic, and sometimes they get produced as native workers who work hard and fast. What affects this? I tried taking all my foreign workers and disbanding them in a native city and them pumping out new workers hoping they would be native ones, but they were just the same slow foreign ones :(

foreign workers can be made from foreign citizens.

These workers constitute as slaves, and cost no upkeep. However, as you noticed, they work at half speed.

naf4ever,
when you decide to build a worker/settler, you send out citizens from that city (>the pop number gets reduced). This worker keeps nationality (see city display, every citizen has a nationality - move mouse over them). When you have a mixed city then, that citizen on the right will be used to create a worker. If he/she is of foreign origin, you get a foreign worker (they need twice as long for a job); that's the concept of nationality in the game.
You may starve down that certain city and wait for a re-grow, because all new born citizens will have your nationality. On the other hand, you don't have to pay upkeep for foreign workers. Not that bad.

I usually move a whole stack of units right up next to a city and attack the next turn, hoping that the stack is enough to take over the city. If I don't succeed that can cost me because the AI will bring in fresh units; they'll heal; they might draft (take a citizen and turn it into a unit)

Does spacebar heal units like in Civ2?

In foreign territory your units don't heal unless you have Battlefield Medicine. Then it goes up 1hp a turn in enemy territory. To build battlefield medicine you have to have built five hospitals.

For my own question, how do you , when you are quoting something that someone said, put it in bold and between the 2 lines etc.? Thanks:)
Well, the obvious way is to hit the "Quote" button above the post (right side). ;)

The other way is to understand VB Code, and precede the quote with
and follow it with
.

.....how d'ya get the "Originally posted by XXXXXXXX" to show up automatically?

When I hit quote, I don't that option!

Oh, I meant what is the point of a worker making a colony.

I was reading the manual today, and it said that it's used to get resources outside your cultural border.

How does your cultural border increase?

Also what is better to do, mine or irrigate? Say for example I see weat on a flat surface, should I mine or irrigate?

Thanks in advance.

Oh also, if you build a city ontop of, say a weat square, do I still get my 3 food? Or can you only get your food, commerce and sheilds from squares AROUND the city you build.

Also, I saw this game on the net somewhere, where someone was getting about 80 sheilds per turn at one city. How is this achieved?

Thanks in advance.

increase cultural borders:
Cultural borders? Those dashed lines surrounding your cities.
Some city improvements (e.g. temple) produce culture points per turn. If a certain limit of cultur points is reached in a city, the borders increase. When it happens, a message is shown on main screen and ... the borders increase. The city display shows points per turn & limits & total points accumulated.
The palace in your capital produces one point per turn at game start. First limit is 10 points, so in 10. turn you should here this *plop* and see dashed lines relocating.
Manual? Confusing. (You can build colonies only outside ANY cultural borders; colonies are eaten up by expanding borders).
Irrigate or mine? Depends. Mine for shields (faster production), irrigate for toasts (faster population growth).
