he means the savegame (like "Lincoln of the Americans 1140 AD.SAV"), not the whole game ;)

First, they are trading techs with the AI, as that helps speed up the tech race.

Second, they are probably playing on higher levels, as the AI gets research bonuses there, which also speeds up the tech race.
The latter is not true anymore, since it was changed in one of the later civ3 (1.21?) pathces. Now the AI don't get any research bonus on the higher levels, but it is instead the human player who gets a research handicap. However, the AI will get a production and growth bonus, so their cities grow faster and they will build libraries/universities faster, resulting in faster research.

Being inspired by a re-animated thread,
do I increase odds on getting a settler out of a hut when I switch all settler production temporarily to something else before entering that hut, but do so in the very same turn (also assuming that I don't have any settlers running around)? Should I wait a turn (because a settler-build-flag might already be set at start of a turn)?
Yes, you improve the odss from 0 to something else, provided all other requirements are fulfilled. To get a settler from a hut, the following must be true:
* You are not currently building any settlers.
* You don't have any settlers on the map.
* You don't have more cities than the average number of cities among the AI.
And no, you don't have to switch away from the settler a turn before popping the hut.

You CAN get a city from a goody hut when you have settlers on the map though. Happened to me last week.

Maybe there's a difference between PTW and vanilla civ3.

Hi. This is my first time in these message boards. I would like to know why every time I add a new technology to Civ 3 and research it, the game crashes. This is really pissing me off.

Whenever I research the tech, it says:

ERROR READING FILE

Missing entry in "text\PediaIcons.txt": TECH_Advanced_Naval_Warfare

Please help me out.

Re: Honorable Warfare.

Thanks to grille, hurricane and billindenver for your quick and exhaustive answers. Now I know how to bring the "Good War" to them...

Ok, maybe you guys can clear up a few questions.

1-If I have a mutual protection pact and either start or am compelled to go to war, can I make peace without ruining my reputation, or do I need to wait till the AI makes peace?

2-If I made an agreement (like a 20 turn payment for a resource), how do I end the agreement after 20 turns? I could not figure out a way to have the agreement expire like the AI does.

3-When a Civ uses nukes, the other countries go to war usually. I noticed in a game a lot of civs looked like they were nuked but the game did not even inform me. I know it was not a meltdown because the city was undefended. Why do I not get informed like the other civs when nukes are used?

Welcome to CFC Lucy,
1-You won't get a rep hit by signing peace with opponent (assuming you have not signed a military alliance with any civ against that enemy). But keep hands of peace treaties when your mutual protection pact (MPP) still exists and your MPP ally is still at war with that certain enemy. Your MPP does not expire by signing peace, so it's very likely to be triggered again. Then you automatically break a peace treaty causing a rep hit!
2-Go to negotions screen & make a suggestion to certain civ. Click on 'active' agreements. Numbers of turns when to expire is shown behind deals that haven't reached the 20-turn limit; if there's no number, simply click on that deal, you can try to renew it or just cancel it by clicking 'clear table'.
You also might check 'always renegotiate deals' in game preferences. This will cause an automatic re-negotion on any 20-turn deal (ai will do during its turn).
3-I'm not sure if you can get information by advisor about civs using nukes. Spy planting may provide this info. /edit:typo

Beware of signing peace in a world war when you are stuck to any MMP net. You just think you have put the fire out in a spot and can take care on another somewhere else, the first fire blazes up again.
I do suspect some very similar schema to be true on using the EDIT-button. ;)

Do you get a rep hit if someone that you have an ROP with declares war on you when you have units on their territory?

bootstoots: no, the AI broke the treaty, so it gets the Rep hit.

@TNO: Yeah, you're right, I forgot the fine tuning Firaxis did on the research. But let's face it, whether they get a bonus, or I get a handicap, the net result is still the same: they can research faster. ;)

Ok, i've got a stupid newbie question for ya.

Whenever you capture an enemy city, it loses all its buildings and advancements adn whatnot, except Great Wonders right? Well i was playign a game recently and was in a costly war with England, we were fighting tooth and nail and neither of us could gain any ground. Ancient Age, BTW, only me, England and Babylon on my continent. Anyway, i am in the middle, between Babylon and England, and cowardly Babylon attacks me while im weakened. They manged to capture my second biggest city, and of course, it loses EVERYTHING i built in it! This just seems odd to me that a captured city loses everything it has when it is captured, i mean, it really takes away from the value of capturing a big city, since it just becomes small and crappy. So i was just wondering if there is any option or anything i missed that will allow a captured city to keep everything you've built in it, or if it's set in stone. Thanks anyone who can help me out here.

When you capture an enemy city, all culture-generating city improvements (temple, library, univ...) and small wonders get destroyed. Others (granary, marketplace, barrack...) have a 50% chance to get destroyed. Great wonders don't get destroyed unless you choose to raze the city. :)

edited because morkapi already answered

I'll just add, though, that I'm 90% certain you *always* get to keep any aqueducts or hospitals, though.
