Do most of you controll your workers manually?

Good question! The most "advanced" players do it all (or mostly) by hand. The reason being the AI is stupid, and will do incredibly stupid things when you let it control your workers. But remember, the amount of manual control is up to the player, and to his/her level of enjoyment. If you are just playing a casual game for your own pleasure, automate all you want!

A good tutorial is cracker's Improving Your Opening Play, although it looks like you *might* have found that already. ;)

Is it possible to load Crackers GOTMs that were recorder on earlier patches.

Yes, you should be able to load any of the GOTMs with the current patch, although this has changed with the latest ones, which have specific versions for Civ3 v1.29f and PTW. If you are having trouble, email or PM cracker.
 
I'm been trying to start a war with the Iroqueis for the last 15 turns. I have lost 9 spies, demanded every thing from 1 city to all of there cities, gold, gpt, gems, maps and every combination of these, but they won't declare war. Could it be because my army so over twice their size and all MA / MI and the best they have is infantry.

I'm asking because who ever declares war will have the rest of the world against theim.

Vanilla CIV III, no patches. I think it's 1.07F
 
..........so I can't give you a comprehensive answer. In my experience, the AI only attacks me when it knows I'm the weaker civ! ;)

However, it sounds like you have a superior military and I wouldn't worry about YOU initiating the war OR even if everybody declares war on you........they'll usually make peace with you after a few turns.

However, keep in mind that I'm more of a Warmonger than a Diplomat! :lol:
 
If the Iroquois are not that aggressive, they won't be as inclined to declare war on you. If you move units and get them really pissed, eventually you will be the one that has to declare war (from experience) and that gives a rep hit.

I would recommend just declaring war.
 
If the problem is interlocking MPPs, such that you and the iroquois have MPPs with the rest of the world, and you fear being attacked by everyone else if you declare war, try this...

Declare war. DO NOT ATTACK. MPPs are triggered by attacks, not wars.

Put your weakest unit out as bait IN YOUR OWN LANDS. Let the iroquois attack it. Voila. You are now the poor defenceless civ attacked by the evil Iroquois and can call in all your MPP allies.

If they are only allied to the iroquois, bribe them to MPP with you first. If you are that powerful it won't be a problem.

the downside is once you are in an MPP web, it's hard to extricate yourself. But you can use it to force an alliance against the enemy of your choice, if you forgo any first strike you might want.
 
to get them to declare war on you, sign a ROP with them, make sure they hate you, and make one of your good cities have no troops defending it. Of course, this costs you a city that they will probably burn down but it might work.
 
bealystock: Much more important than getting the Iroquois to declare war is that you install the 1.29 patch ASAP! You get a much better game.

BTW, declaring war don't mean much for the other civs in the world, unless it also means breaking some deals. It also don't matter even if there are MPP's in the picture, as an MPP is not triggered by a declaration of war, but rather by an attack in enemy territory - regardless of who started the war.

I do have PTW, but have not installed it yet. Because I want to finsh this game first. I'm afraid I might loose it in the upgrade. My comp does strange thing at times. LOL
 
No problem with that. PTW and vanilla civ3 are two seperate programs. You only get a problem if you attempt to open PTW savegames in vanilla civ.
 
I have two questions. Thanks in advance for your help.

1) I am playing India, and the Chinese and Persians have a MPP. I currently have 20-turn peace treaty with the Persians that is about to end. First, I trade coal for spices with China. Then, I renegotiate peace but do not agree to it (i.e. I declare war on Persia). For two turn now, I have attacked Persian units. However, China does not declare war on me, even though it has a MPP with Persia. Can anyone tell me why?

2) Suppose that China did declare war on me. Would my reputation take a hit because I indirectly forced our spices-for-coal trade to end? It seems to me that my reputation often takes a hit when a trade agreement ends prematurely, even though I didn't do anything to cause the agreement to end.

1. For an MPP to activate, you have to attack their troops in their territory. If you're attacking them in your territory or nuetral/someone elses, it won't be activated.

2. Not sure, but I believe that your rep shouldn't take a hit. After all, it is China that is declaring war on you. However, this game sometimes works in strange ways...
 
I'm back again after a long time away (it's called college! ;) The semester's almost over, and I will be back to GOTMs! WOOHOO!! :)

Anyway, I had a question on leaders. Usually I play the game peaceful until Tanks (they roll over everyone else, as long as you are the first to discover them!). Sometimes I dominate once I get tanks, sometimes I go peaceful but take that opportunity to steamroll the next-most-powerful player.

Anyway, for the first time now, I am being militaristic from the start, and having good results (Regent difficulty)...that's how to best get another city!...but I have one overlying question:

How often do you get that vital first leader?

It seems like I've won 20+ battles with elite units and still have not received my first leader! I know after the first one, some wonders become available to increase odds...but how do you get that elusive first leader? I've only ever had one leader in my whole Civ3 career! (Though, like I said, this is the first time I am going all-out militaristic.)

your initial odds are 1 in 16, IIRC. So to not have a great leader after 20 elite wins is not that odd. Remember that victories against barbs don't count, since they can't generate leaders.

you're doing the only thing you can to increase your chances of getting a leader - fighting a lot.

Your only way to improve the odds of getting a leader on any given turn is to win more elite battles per turn. that means having lots of elites (so barracks help; the more units start as veteran, the more will be elite) and not losing them if you can at all avoid it (every killed elite is an unknown number of missed opportunities in future turns for a leader). Your odds of a leader are twice as good when attacking, so attack where possible. And cross your fingers and rub any lucky rabbit's feet you have :)
 
.....this Small Wonder increases your chances of getting a Great Leader from 1 in 16 TO 1 in 12.

Since a victorious army is a pre-requisite for the Heroic Epic, that doesn't help get your first leader (which you need to create the army to get the HE)
 
I know how to attach an image to a post. But I've noticed people linking images into their posts that are greater than 100KB and the source location is on the civfanatics website in an "uploads4" directory.

How do I upload an image?
 
..........Maybe I was being presumptous in thinking ButSam would appreciate a specific tip on improving the chances of gaining subsequent Leaders during the course of a game! :)

EMAn, I wasn't trying to be rude, sorry if it came over that way. But the question was really about the difficulty with getting the first leader, not leaders in general.....

and, FWIW, my own imperfect experience is that the first one always seems disproportionately harder to get, even after accounting for the effects of HE etc later. I think it's because I worry about the first one - after the first couple any extras are a bonus, and I'm not biting my nails waiting for each result.
