the simple way:

click the button marked 'quote' at the top right of the post you want to quote.

the complicated way: click the same buttan and check out the stuff in [ ] - that is the code used to mark quotes, bold text, italics, colors and so on. Then, simply type the same stuff into your post

example:

[quote ]this is a quote [/quote ]

[b ]this is bold text [/b ]

will result in
this is a quote

this is bold text

if you drop the empty space before the ]

Good morning Lt. It's a fine Navy day in San Diego! Now, to business:

I am currently playing a game as China - warlord level, large map, pangea, 60% water, and am in the early modern age. Something has occured, that while it's working in my favor, nonetheless, has me totally baffled.

I wiped the Germans off the map, and to complete this task, I had to seek them out on a small island that they had colonized. Germany's fate was sealed, and the small island city of New Hamburg became mine. My first intention was to build a harbor (as I had almost every luxury and wanted happy campers all around). Here's the mystery: Upon Germany's defeat, the city window opened up, and lo and behold, without any harbor whatsoever, all the mainland China luxuries were available to the new city!!

I've tried to find a reason for this, such as maybe a tech rendering harbors unneccesary for trade across water, but with no luck yet. Any ideas?

Raijer, a couple possibilities are:

- Airport or harbor in the city that wasn't destroyed when you captured it. If you're in the modern age and checked for harbors, check for airports.
- If they aren't alone on the island, you can "use" another civ's harbor/road network to get resources/luxuries to your cities. For example, if the island was shared with Egypt and Egypt had a harbor and roads from the harbor city to the ex-German city, your goods would travel the Egyptian roads to that city (as long as you're not at war with Egypt and, I believe, they've not signed a trade embargo against you).

I've heard that if the culture borders bump into each other (New Hamburg and the mainland) then you don't need a harbor to trade luxs and resources.

I tested it and it was only for strategic resources in my case. But I may be wrong - like I probably am.

Hey all.

Was wondering if there is a way to tell which wonders will set off a ga for each civ? I triggered a really early ga in my last game and didn't want too (didn't think the great wall would trigger it for the celts).

Each wonder has certain attributes. Check the civopedia for what they are. If you build or capture a wonder or combination of wonders that match your attributes then a golden age will start.

ex. Egypt is religious and industrious
The pyramid is industrious and religious.
It will cause a golden age for Egypt.

2nd ex. Persia is scientific/industrious
Persia builds Great Library which is scientific.
Persia then builds Great wall which is industrious.
Persia will get a golden age.

Also be wary of if you capture cities with wonders in them. Take the example Yzman put down:

Persia is scientific/industrious
Persia seizes the Glib from Germany
If Persia builds the Great Wall -
It will get a Golden Age

That is my signature, which is something that is automatically included at the end of all your posts (unless you uncheck the box "Show Signature:"). To get a signature, go to your User CP (at the top of the site page), go to "Edit Profile," go to the sig box, and type your sig. I, along with Civ-1-addict (and maybe some others that I don't know of), have a "code" sig. To include text in code format (whether it's in your sig or in a post), type the following without the *s:

[*CODE]Your text[/CODE*]

With *s, it will result in:

Code:
Your text
The purpose of the code format is that, unlike when you normally type something without the code format, the text in the code format will appear just as it is in the text box (the place where you type your posts), including spacing. An example (notice the spacing):

Code:
all
       bleh
                 mountain blah blah HAHAHA!
  ooh yeah
If I typed this in exactly the same way, with the same spacing in the text box, but didn't include it in the code format, it would look like this:

all
bleh
mountain blah blah HAHAHA!
ooh yeah

This is why I must have my sig in code format, otherwise it would look messed up (like your version of it ;)).

OK I just realized I do not know how to get the same function as "Top 5 cities"in Civ2 ?
How do I know about other civs and their cities ?

thanks for the help,

Hit F11 on the keyboard. It brings up a screen with Top 5 cities and some other demographics. Hitting F8 shows you your current score and other civ's scores.

Help... I am a newby. I just downloaded a bunch of your cool units graphics. Now what do i do with them?? Also, using the editor i create a new unit but ini file error and blown out of the game help help help fawltyman thanks.....

fawltyman - I think if you ask this in the creation and customization forum, they will be able to better help you out (those guys are more experts at it then us). And you'll need to specify if you are using PTW or regular Civ3, because there is some differences. I think in the Creation and Customization forum or the Unit files forum there is a 'sticky' thread about how to add in units. And there might be some info in the Tutorials forum. (If you have PTW, you'll have to look for threads that specify it is for PTW, the rest of the threads would most likely be for regular Civ3).

Arathorn:

This thanks is a bit late in coming, as I didn't have a chance to get back to my game until tonight - but yeah, you were right - it was the English next door who had a harbor, and I was hooked up via railroad. Pow. I had all my luxuries.

Follow up Q: Is this type of connection always valid (excepting war, I'm sure), or do I need an ROP and/or trade agreement in place to take advantage of this benefit?

Uh.. magic-like double post with a single click... weird. Sorry.

I have a few questions regarding the chart of Top 5 cities Demographics.
- Informations given such as Approval rating, population, ... concerns the TOP 1 city, is there any means to get info for TOP 2 city on this chart ?
- Is there someone who know how those info are calculated, for instance, Disease: X%, Family Size: X children, Military Service: X years, etc.
Thank you.

Shabbaman:

So whatcher saying is that you don't need to wheel and deal for a trade embargo? If so, brilliant. Nice... evil.. my kinda Civ tactic. This thread f@#king rules! Thanks!

@JMK:

The demographics concern your whole Empire, IIRC. They are based on, tadaa, your game of course. It's something like this: you have a lot of units, and a very small population, then military service is high. I'm sure this is somehow calculated, but I don't know how exactly. It isn't that important either.

If there was an option to see demographics of your opponent... that would come in handy.

@raijer: I think it'll only work if it's your own harbor that connects them to your mainland. The problem is, btw, that you have to cut off your own city as well...

Raijer:

- The "normal" status is that you can use another civ's harbors/roads/airports to transport your luxuries and strategic resources to your own cities (or even trade over them). I am 90% certain you don't even need an embassy to do this.

I believe a trade embargo is as good as a war at "breaking" this chain -- you can't use the infrastructure of an enemy who has signed an embargo against you. I've not verified this, but I believe it's the way it works.
