Via cultural domination in the early 1970's :D

It was a LOT of fun, and I learned tons. Being an old Colonization (the game everyone thought sucked) nut, a lot of the game was similar - only bigger and better. So it was pretty cool. I did run into a lot of things though...

Funnest thing: All the cities I managed to flip over to my side! I got like 3 English, and 2 Iroquois, so I was pretty happy.

Most frustrating thing: One English city in the middle of my territory and completely surrounded with my own cities desperately cranking out culture-buildings. It would not flip! I did push it back into a 9 tile square, but I guess it was too well developed (8 pop?) to flip for me. And by the time I was able to spy on them (for propaganda), they had gone to democracy! Stupid English! :p

Dumbest thing: The AI's attempt at "trades". Sanitation for a world map? PUH-LEEZE! I guess I really need some tips in this department, because nomatter what I tried, the AI just did not want to trade ANYTHING (besides for my maps). I had a global monopoly on spices, but do you think I could get anything for them? No! How stupid is that?

Most suprising thing: The AI's being huge chickens. Two large continents with 3 AI's each (and me huddled away on my private island) - you think they'd fight, right? Nope! Not one fight. No tussles, scraps, or even stepping a foot over enemy territory (except mine, of course)! They just sat there, doing nothing. I had to personally start the world's first war, hoping it would set off some fireworks. So I aimed for the Celts (who had 5 cities, but lost one when it flipped to Russia) because they were the weakest and most pathetic culture. Poor buggers were still stuck in the stone age while the rest of us were rolling out the infantry. So I lined up a whole bunch of Guerillas outside their borders and went knocking:
"Give me this city."
"Sorry, I don't think thats possible."
"Give me this city, NOW."
"Sorry, I don't think thats possible."
"GIVE. ME. THIS. CITY."
"Sorry, I don't think tha.."
"Oh #(*$ you."
So I charged in with my troops and captured three cities in two turns. I was wading through their knights (hehe) that were defending the road to their capital when suddenly Russia declares war on the Celts too, and marched right in from behind with Cossaks! HAHA!
So yeah, that was the end of them. Unfortunatly I kind of forgot that I had a RoP agreement with the Celts at the time, so after that all the other nations wouldn't exchange RoP with me. I was like "Oops" for a bit, and then I realized I was almost done my tech rush to aircraft. Who needs RoP when you're the only one that can fly? :D

Most annoying thing: Pollution. Ugh. My main island was pretty much a cesspool by the end of the game. I had like a dozen workers just jumping from mess to mess, constantly. Fortunatly I had layed RR tracks on every square inch of the island, so getting around wasn't a problem :)

All in all though, it was great fun, and a huge learning experience! I'm just about to fire up another game and see what happens - hopefully there'll be more fighting this time!

Cheers

(PS: Any tips on trading with the ******** AI would be welcome!)

Hope you have many more :) Breaking any treaty will stop the AI offering GPT to you, breaking RoP often causes them to declare war, so be careful next time you do this...

If you move up a couple levels(I'm assuming you started with either Cheiftan or the tutuorial), the game will be alot more bloody. The AIs pretty passive up till Warlord/Regent or so.

Also moving up will help on the trading, the AI doesnt have much to trade on Cheiftan so it will make rediculous requests(like Sani for WM:rolleyes: )

Congrats on your first win & welcome to CFC!!

Also being on the same continent with the AI Civs will improve your chances of fighting. The AI is not very good at naval invasions. Select a Conitnents or Pangea map. Then, the AI will come calling; especially if your military is weak.

Congrats - I don't think that I have ever won culturally.

Usually, when you try for domination, you have a hard time winning diplo. Unless you are very rich...

Congrats on your first win, there's many more to come :D

Just a question; are you the MachDelta from TO?

EDIT: About the pollution; just click Shift+P when controlling the worker, and he'll automatically clean pollution! I normally have 10-15 workers in standby for Pollution :)

Many more? Yeah right. I'm playing a new game right now that i'm pretty much ready to quit. I got off to a decent start, but bumped into the Aztecs, who I knew were going to be a MAJOR headache later on in the game. So I watched them for a bit, and then realized that they had no source of iron (while I had 2). I figured it would be a perfect opportunity to strike swift and hard to finish them off for good. So, I did. After that came many blissful years of building my 'grand' civilization on a massive island (that just happens to have a frikkin HUGE desert in the middle of it. Doh.), not realizing that with each turn I was falling farther and farther behind the rest of the world. Next thing I know, I get a visit from a spanish ship. SHIP?! WTH? I hadn't even gotten around to map making yet, what the heck was going on? Couple years after that, I got visits from 7 other ships. And after checking scores for a while, I realized that I was pretty much the crappiest 'major' civ. As it stands, the Spanish have HUGE expanses of land, amazing tech, and a stupid number of wonders (their culture score is nuts). The Russians, English, and Japaneese are all far ahead of me in terms of land, resources (stupid good for nothing desert), culture, etc. The only things i've been able to keep relatively up to date on are my military (since i've been fending off a barage of colonization attempts on MY island, damnit) and tech (after almost going broke trying to catch up). And the worst part is, everyone HATES me! They all hated me from the second they saw me, probably for lynching the Aztecs so early on. Hey, its not like I went all genocidal! My population is probably 50% Aztec! Not that they care. So basically no one wants to trade or exchange techs with me - so i'm basically fighting 4 civs all bigger than me. ARGH! Its impossable :(

/me goes to start another game on a lower difficulty level than Monarch

Oh, and no i'm not the MD from TO. I'm a little farther west than that ;)

PS: Thanks for the tip!

Just tips :
1. If u are behind tech, reset your science slider to 0. There is no way to catch up with the rest of the AI.
2. After u have enough money buy the techs
3. When there is war, that is a change for u to get more tech, ally with the strongest and ask them to give u techs for joining the war. U might try to initiate war between them :D
4. Trading your lux, most likely u have 1/2 lux monopoly.
your first win much better than me when I play chieftain :D

Congratulations for your first win!!! I assume you're already a civfanatic!!! This is probably the most addictive game that has ever existed. You'll learn and find everything you need in this fantastic site. Read a lot the "sticky" topics in each forum and be sure to MEMORISE (j/k) the great articles at the "War Academy".

Have fun!!!

With TO, I meant Tactical Ops - a tactical FPS game! There's a Canadian lad playing that game who goes under the nick MachDelta :)

AH! Hahaha, then yeah, thats me! :D I thought I recognized your name, but I couldn't be sure without the avatar :p
/me waves :)

Oh yeah, and just as an update.. I ditched the last game and started a third one. Its going pretty good because I friggin micromanaged the hell out of my first few turns and managed to trap the English on a small chunk of land, leaving a whole big slab of prarie/desert open to me. I did some nutso settler rushing, and managed to snag a pretty fair chunk of the continent before the Spanish colonized it all. I've even managed to stay fairly relevant in the tech game by trading techs with the Germans and Scandinavians (who like me, they really like me! :p). Only thing is, the Spanish got cocky and declared war on me! I'm not really worried of the intial strike, as i've got a decent reserve of spearmen sitting around... but this war could get very messy, with both of us cranking out troops and neglecting everything else. Hopefully I can convince the spanish to end it before it drags us both down. But not before I snag a city or two for myself! ;)

Lol, how could you not recognize TO then? :p

Nice to hear that your game is going well, good luck in the war against the Spanish!

Oh, and if you wanna improve your game, the best thing is to read some articles in the War Academy, or play a training game.
Also, you could play a story game (playing normally, but posting progress, screenies etc in the Stories & Tales forum) - where people will give you advice based on the happenings in your game :)

you can get massive amounts of money for spices, on monarch once i got 80 gold per turn and 1000 gold for oil
