Newbies Galore

So am I a newbie? j/k Anyway, those the theory is: When one reconizes the Site Feedback forum then one is no longer a 'newbie.' What if someone;s second post is here?

Actually, you can just disregard what I said completely, because note what TF says here:Notice that here he said posted, not discovered. So Franklyn, if you hadn't posted asking if not posting but just viewing SF means you're a newbie, you would still be a newbie, but now you're not a newbie because you asked if you were a newbie! If that makes any sense... :crazyeye:

Uhhhh, not really. But I've posted in SF, so technically I'm no longer a newbie if I ever was because I can't recall posting here before though I might have. Got that? :crazyeye:

The fun of site feedback isn't necessarily posting here. It's reading the posts -- who's hacked off, who's hacked at whom, what people are lobbying Thunderfall to do with the site. It's watching the sausage factory in action that's amusing and often eye-opening.

Then that poster is probably a DL (double login)... We actually caught some DLs when a few "newbies" posted moderator complaint threads in Site Feedback. It was pretty stupid.

If we told you, how could we catch others?

Silly newbie. :p

:yeah:

I believe he just told you that he'd never tell you. :D

Its called nodding and winking and using gestures, don't you watch any movies?

Seems some people have been spamming the hell out of feedback, might have to start cracking heads....

AAHHHH!!! Mummyman stole my sig! Argh! You AND PH!!!

You ____ _#*$_#*$)(@#*_!!!!!!!

STOP STEALING SIGS@$*&($@@#(_)(#

And I agree with AoA...about cracking heads of course ;)

Hmm how would you check if two members were actually the same person. Hmmm. I would check whether the IPs match and its definately possible to find out everyone's IP on a forum so its not too difficult to see if they are the same. The only problem should be with dailup members but even then they might log in twice without reconnecting...

And if they hadn't thought of disconnecting before, I'm sure they have now...

I think there may be a way of getting around that as well if they really wanted to check, like contacting the ISP although that might not work.

There are other ways, I'm sure. People leave clues around. Some people have very distinct posting styles, misspelling certain words in consistent ways, or phrases that no one else uses. Sometimes a DL simply makes an obvious gaffe that references their primary logon.

How about me at work where I am always logged on to the net? Is my IP always the same ALWAYS? I don't know diddly about computers or much else for htat matter, just curious.

How did you tell they were DL's?

The way you get suspicious, and part of the evidenc is a similarity in style, laguage usage and viewpoint. Then you do a comparison of IP address, which even for the same poster have variances, particularly if they have different IPs at home and work. There are IP tracing progrmas that give you the entire route a post came through, rather than just to home IP address.

i used to just think cfc was the strategy and tips forum then i found general discussions:)
And now you've spammed - er - posted your way up to 1400 posts! ;)

Anyway, yeah, I've noticed the influx of newbies, too. When I vist Civ3 - GD I try to help 'em out a bit without grouching at their "newbie-ness" too much: "I don't know if this has been posted before, but I think I found a bug. My tank lost to a spearman!" I've made a few new friends, there, and I always hope the newbies will become good, productive members here.
