What a fun game! I had a great time, thanks to the staff for making this possible.

It's surprising to see how close the Domination and the Culture dates are. Maybe this time people were milking for points?

And of course, I am in awe of the diplo date. Incredible!

I think the main reason is high level game. Ai builds too much units to kill them fast.

thanks! :) I was late to MM one turn to win 4 turns sooner in 920AD.

THANX to the staff! It was really interesting game! :goodjob:

Congrats Kaizer with his first award!

Congrats to all winners! Thanks to staff for making a great game!

And now the results are out, we can reveal our latest goody to help inspire you to worship us staff for our sheer brilliance :)... Here's where everyone settled.

Botm09FirstCities.jpg

The numbers by each player's name indicate the turn settled on (starting turn is 0). Players are colour coded by game class (challenger=red, adventurer=blue). Symbols indicate victory condition, if there's no symbol then the player either retired or was defeated. The yellow border indicates the land that was visible at the start of the game.

Sorry the map isn't quite up to in-game standards (there's a limit to how much time it's worth spending coding pretty graphics. Thanks to AlanH btw for doing some of the code that made this map possible ;) )

My comments: I can't believe how conservative almost all of you are, refusing to move the settler even when you know there's ample food a few tiles away :p

Congratulations to yvesb for being the only person who spent the time exploring to discover one of the spots that would give you gems AND food :lol:

Thanks DS. Indeed, I settled only in the fourth turn, which was hardly worth it, but let me briefly explain the underlying reasoning. Prior to the game, I generated some 30 maps with the BOTM-9 settings. IIRC, only once have I observed a case where a single plains cow was in the BFC. Otherwise, there have been more or better food resources. Assuming that this would apply in the BOTM as well, I decided to settle toward the assumed food. First moving the scout, who did not see food in the east, consequently moving the settler somewhere southwest. I was shocked what I saw from my new position -- no food whatsoever, which is something that had probability zero (in my mind) a priori. I think it was turn 2 when the scout (further moving south) discovered the cows, and I figured, being in a mess anyway, I might as well move over to a place that has both cows and gems in the BFC. Unfortunately, I missed out on the copper. Despite the early mishaps, I enjoyed the game a lot. Thanks for generating a degenerate map.:goodjob:

Perhaps if the difficulty was Noble more people would have considered walking further?

In my unsubmitted game (never got RL time to finish) I knew I was going to have a hard time competing at this level let alone giving my opponents some extra turns headstart.

That image is a great piece of info however, two thumbs up!

Good tech :) I love a gadget.

The lesson I take from this is that choosing a settling location makes little difference to the best players. Check the medal winners: gosha, kaiser, jesusin, blastoidstalker all settled in place. hhhawk, jovan, lanstro and grey cardinal all picked different alternative starts. Seems to me there's little point trading turns for a marginally better location.

But for everyone else, picking a start spot that fits with what you are trying to do (or conversely choosing a strategy that fits the start spot you choose) is the difference between life and death.

@DS: :cool:! :bowdown::worship:
And is it correct to assume that the order from top to bottom for a given start location is the order of finish among that group?

Shame on us!
As I said in the spoiler, settling with no food is a big mistake.

I am sure that, if the tile 1W of the settler had been not forested, allowing us to see that there was no food in the starting position, half of the gamblers pleople in the left side would have walked to the food.

I personally don't think settling without food is a huge mistake, necessarily.

In this game, I utilized a "2 city approach", meaning the 2nd city was almost as important as my capital.

The capital had a low food surplus, so it would be used mainly for commerce and production(bureaucracy would make those dye tiles a bit more productive). It still had enough food neutral tiles that it could grow quite large, without food sources, and plenty of irrigated tiles for farms.

The 2nd city had ample food, so it would be used for a GP farm and wonder builder.

Settling on plains hill is also quite a big asset, getting your first worker out in 20% less time, and also reducing every other early thing, of course. If the starting spot had been a grassland hill I would have considered moving more.

Its suprising how many Adventurers (free worker + agri) took the start spot though. No need to build worker first, and after that first farm you can build one (or better yet, a settler) even faster. It was just screaming at us to take the food site. Maybe its lack of experience among those who choose Adv save... or maybe its just me who is stupid somehow:confused:

Edit to add: half the ADV who won game took the gems start and half took the food. Those who took the gems went for cultural victory, which makes sense, I guess.
